3.5 ⭐️ It’s hard to get connected to characters in thrillers, especially with thrillers that are multiple POV’s & timelines which is why I’m not giving it a higher rating, but the story was fun and addictive! A good palette cleanser with good writing. Would recommend only if you’re looking for a quick easy bingeable read.

I really enjoyed this thriller. It was interesting how the various viewpoints all intertwined. There were many twists that I did not see coming and I was surprised until the end. I don’t know if the epilogue was necessary but I did like the ending overall. I will definitely read more from this author!

From the outset, this mystery novel captivates readers with its immersive audio experience and intriguing storyline. As the narrative unfolds, however, the complexity of the plot and the numerous characters introduced can be overwhelming. While this may initially pose a challenge, it ultimately enriches the story, offering depth and nuance to the mystery.

The use of dual timelines adds an extra layer of intrigue, keeping readers guessing and engaged throughout. While it may require some effort to piece together the various threads of the story, the payoff is well worth it. The frequent travel and seemingly disjointed plot elements may lead to moments of frustration, but they serve to heighten the suspense and keep readers on the edge of their seats.

One of the highlights of the reading experience is the opportunity for discussion and interpretation. Engaging in conversations with fellow readers who have differing opinions and perspectives adds depth to the overall experience, offering new insights and interpretations.

While his novel presents its challenges, it offers a rewarding and thought-provoking reading experience. Despite the occasional confusion, the captivating storyline and rich character development make it a journey well worth embarking on.

If Something Happens to Me starts with a bang and doesn't let up until the end. Just when you think you know what happened, you realize you're wrong. Told from three perspectives, the connections between them do not become clear until midway through the story, and then it becomes a race for survival. The narrators for the audiobook do an excellent job, though I'm not certain it was necessary to have three different narrators. I appreciate, however, that the narrators for Poppy and Ryan are exclusive to their characters, while the third narrator covers all the POV from the Philadelphia mobster timeline. This helps avoid the head-hopping confusion common in other books with multiple POV. This is a thrilling ride with interesting characters, making it difficult for me to hit the pause button. Thank you to the author, Minotaur books, and Netgalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for a fair review.

Thanks NetGalley for an ARC audiobook- loved the full case narration on this book.

You have the perspective of Ryan Reynolds, boyfriend of Allison who went missing 5 years earlier and has been blamed to the point of moving and changing his name.

Poppy, rookie detective who is working Allison’s case after her car was found in the river with two male dead bodies. The car also had in it a note that was labeled “if something happens to me.”

Shane O’Leary, a mobster, from Philly with a troubled son who is being bullied at school. The mobster tells stories of granting favors, asking favors, and “taking care” of bodies.

Ryan is contacted by someone in his new identity saying he knows who he is and that he wants to meet and everything he thought he knew unravels.

This book was full of twists and turns and I’m excited for its release to discuss with more people ! Will be looking for more from this author.

As usual Alex Finlay writes an excellent book. He has a way of providing a lot of information without overwhelming the reader. This was a great read/listen.The plot twist was a little predictable but only after a certain point, but that doesn’t take away from the story. Great read!!!

I mostly enjoyed the storyline in this book. I marked it as 3 stars, but it was worth 3 ½. High schoolers Ryan and Ali are parked by the lake when Ryan is knocked unconscious and Ali is taken. It then continues 5 years later and is told from a few different points of view. It follows Ryan as he tries to move on but feels guilty about what happened to Ali and why the case hasn’t been solved. Poppy is a new deputy sheriff who is looking into the case after Ali’s car is found in the lake with 2 unidentified men dead inside. Not sure if telling the other pov will give away anything so I’ll leave that out. The main twist was in the middle of the book and then it was just wrapping up the story. I didn’t find it “gripping” but interesting enough to want to know what happens and keep reading. I listened to the audiobook for this one and enjoyed the different narrators. It helped keep the story going. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced reader’s copy.

Action packed and addictive plot you just want to keep reading/ listening.

It’s one that you must pay attention very closely because everyone will be a suspect in your eyes.

The characters do tend to blend together if you’re not paying attention on who is who. I had to write down in my notes like this person did this and this person is related to this one.

I’d suggest to go in blind because you just know you’re going to get a nail biting story. Short chapters it’s bound to keep up interested.

The story is about Ali’s disappearance what happened to her? Who did it? Her boyfriend Ryan is never found guilty. Now it’s 5 years later and a vehicle is pulled out of the lake but who’s in it?

I enjoyed the plot to this book! It kept me interested going back and forth from characters BUT it was a little confusing trying to keep the past and present separated with each character.
I enjoyed the book, and got through the audiobook in one sitting, but if I had to take a break it would have been a book I wouldn't have gone back to. But where I didn't have a break, it kept my attention and I was able to absorb the information coming from all the different POV'S and make my own assumptions and about 90% of them were wrong - which is amazing for the author because I'm always waiting for that plot twist, and there were a lot in here.
The narrarators were AMAZING. Plot was great. I think that the different points of view would have been a great opportunity for the author to make this a duo set, not just one book.
Regardless, there were a lot of twists, turns, laughs out loud, scoffs, and I did thoroughly enjoy the book.
I will be listening to more of Alex's books!

Alex Finlay knows how to craft a tense thriller. This latest book is no exception. The story centers around a young girl that is missing and presumed dead. Ryan, her boyfriend at the time is the main suspect. Five years later, Ryan is now in law school with a new name, traveling in Europe with his classmates. Poppy has returned to her home town as a deputy sheriff and is tasked with revisiting the case when the missing girl’s car is found in a lake. She discovers many secrets that hit close to home. Lastly there is Shane, the head of a Philly crime syndicate that is trying to get some payback for his family. As the story unfolds the multiple POVs lead to secrets and lies and truths that tie them all together.

This was a little over the top at times but I enjoyed the action and the various characters as their stories all collided. It is fast paced and kept my interest the entire time. The narration for the audiobook was done very well.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

They went the extra mile on the audiobook which was excellent. The narrators were all top notch and it really brought the different view points to life.

This was not my favorite Finlay story. I feel like it was the way in which it was told. It felt a bit choppy. It came together beautifully tho! He is truly a master of this genre - action pack with twists and turns until the end.

Thank you to Net Galley, St Martin Press and Alex Finlay for the opportunity to review this book!

I always enjoy Alex Finlay’s books. This one was shorter than most at 7hrs but the narration was great and the time just flew. I did find it difficult in the first half to keep track of the different plots/timelines but once they all merged together, things really took off. I won’t say more because that would require a spoiler warning. I’d sum up the experience in two words: Definitely recommend!
Thanks to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the advance audio copy

Thank you Macmillan Audio and Minotaur for my free ARC of If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay — available now!

Read this if you:
🍿 enjoy fast-paced, easy to read popcorn thrillers
🤨 don't mind if you can kind of guess the direction things will go
🌽 can handle corny tropes — no spoilers, but this is one of my least faves

Years later, Ryan is still haunted by the day that his girlfriend vanished into thin air after a carjacking. Everyone just assumes that he killed her and hid her body, because his story DOES sound incredulous, even to his own ear. But when the car is finally found at the bottom of a lake with the bodies of two men inside, it's obvious to everyone that someone else was involved in Ali's disappearance.

Okay y'all — no spoilers, but this went a direction I'm just not at all a fan of. I find it kind of lazy, which I know is rich coming from someone who's never written a story in her life, but it's just not to my taste and I lost interest pretty hard in the second half of the book. I generally like Alex Finlay so this is a one-off miss for me. Definitely give it a try if you're looking for something fast-paced and don't have any hard "heck no" tropes/inclusions in thriller books. Happy to share if you want to know in advance, just DM me!

If Something Happens To Me is a fast paced mystery-thriller that has a lot going on (in a bad way).

This one is a hard one for me to review, it was so fast moving and compelling but so many things fell flat.

I feel that the main issue for me was too many POVs. This led to items being revealed by one person and then another character had to be told or find out on their own later in the book. It duplicated a lot of effort and while reading it felt tedious. The amount of point of views also meant that we didn't spend a ton of time with Ryan, who is portrayed as our main character.

It also went in a very different direction than what is alluded to in the summary. This could work for a lot of people but unfortunately it ended up being a plot direction that I do not enjoy in novels.

I love Finlay’s twisted plots and fast-paced writing but I think what I most enjoy about his books are the characters. Even though this is a darker thriller full of crime and plenty of bad guys, the characters (for the most part!!!) are decent people. Sure, they all are flawed and have made plenty of mistakes but the majority are good people at their core. Even the mob boss is an incredibly devoted husband and father. It’s just so rare to find so many nice and likable people in this genre.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME was a great story with plenty of twists I didn’t see coming. I loved the time the characters spent in Europe and the relationships and friendships they kept over the years. A few bits were maybe a tad outlandish but overall it was an action packed story that I couldn’t put down!

3.5/5

This thriller had a lot going on in it: murder, abductions, mob ties, corrupt law enforcement and so much more!

I found that this book was an interesting listen - it was definitely more of a mob/organized crime thriller than what I typically read. I don’t love talk of torture and disfigurement (normal things that you would associate with mob enforcement) so I did not love that part of this book but I still enjoyed it overall.

This is my second Alex Finlay - The Night Shift was my first. I would read more books written by him for sure and look forward to seeing what he puts out next!

The audiobook for this was pretty good and I very much appreciate the advanced copy from macmillan audio and netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been a reader of Alex Finlay's previous books but he's never been a must-read author for me. This was another quick and entertaining read that didn't leave much of an impression. While I enjoyed the story and the action, I felt like it was executed poorly. Too many location settings, too many characters and multiple POVs made it hard to keep everything straight. The writing style trended into the over-explaining territory, "saying" instead of "showing." I'll probably read more of Finlay's books but this one won't land on any of my top lists.
