A heartwarming journey of reunion. It shows unconditional love. The story is about three dogs who get separated from their owner.
W. Bruce Cameron has written another wonderful novel about dogs and their owners. I was definitely teary-eyed at times. The book is both sad and very heartwarming. I read it in a day because I had to find out what happened to the dogs.
The story is told from the point of view of the dogs for most of the book. Riggs, an Australian shepherd, is the alpha rule follower who will do anything to get his pack back together. The smart Jack Russell, Luna, helps the dogs survive. Archie, the silly labradoodle, is the new addition to the pack and follows the other two. After a tragic accident, the dogs are sent to a shelter and adopted. We follow Riggs, Luna and Archie on their individual journey and their journey together. While the ending was predictable, I still loved the book. The epilogue was a nice addition to tie up the other dog characters that were encountered throughout the story.
Thank you to Tor Publishing and NetGalley for the arc copy.
Owning 3 dogs is not for the weak! This is a story about a family of dogs and their adventures as they try to get back to being one big happy family with their humans. I enjoyed this book. There is some dog abuse, and certainly, neglect in the storyline.
As you would expect from a Bruce Cameron story, My Three Dogs is a heartwarming tale about a family, love, loss and hope of reunification. But it’s also a story that truly pissed me off, because it was proof of how many people shouldn’t have dogs. (Based on some of the character’s actions, they shouldn’t have had children either.). My last two adopted fur kids were both found wandering the streets. One even had a chip but with a disconnected phone number. So, I’m a little passionate about this.
Liam goes out on a limb when he buys Archie off a man who had been unwillingly saddled with his care. Archie is Liam’s third dog. And with many other things, it’s a decision Liam makes without consulting his live-in girlfriend, Sabrina. That leads to a cascade of actions that cause things to go horribly wrong for the pups.
The reader needs to be willing to accept the anthropomorphism of the three dogs, as we are privy to all their thoughts. Parts of it reminded me somewhat of “The Incredible Journey”, for those old enough to remember that Walt Disney classic.
The book is a reminder of the time commitment necessary to have a dog. Not one individual was ever shown training a dog. Too many couldn’t even be bothered to take basic care of them.
This is not a believable book, but it’s incredibly moving. Keep the tissues handy! This is perfect for those of us who love our own (and all other dogs).
And can someone explain the book cover to me? Did the publisher not know what an Australian Shepherd looks like?
My thanks to Netgalley and Tor Publishing for an advance copy of this book.
As the owner of three dogs I had to pick this one up!
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy!
This was a cute, quick read. I enjoyed reading about the adventures these three pups went on and how Riggs, Archie and Luna all adapted differently to the situations they found themselves in.
I was sad at times thinking about my own dogs and if something like what happened in the story happened to them and I was also to quickly figure out how this one would wrap up which is why I'm landing at a solid 3.
The writing was a little sophomoric as well and it reminded me of a book that wold be better suited for middle grade or youth.
Recommend for anyone who has dogs!
I admit - I chose this book because of the author. I love/hate his other work. Love the stories and the almost always happy endings that are easy-quick reads. I hate the way they bring out how bad humans are to some of the best creatures.
I made it almost all the way thru without tearing up. It was another successful portrayal of how dogs are magnificent creatures and the power of their love for their people!
W. Bruce Cameron does it again! I was ecstatic when I got approved for this ARC, and it delivered, and then some! Nothing brings me to tears more than being inside the mind of woman’s best friend.
Doggoned Delightful!
Dogs add a lot of enjoyment to our lives. They certainly added a lot of enjoyment to this book!
Small builder Liam is leading a pretty happy normal life with his girlfriend Sabrina and his three dogs and is making significant plans for the future when a tragedy rips into all their lives and destroys their current happiness. I will not reveal much more about this aspect of the plot, but I will say that Liam, Sabrina, and Liam’s brother Brad came alive for me as real people, someone I might know from the neighborhood, with good points and flaws. I really enjoyed little touches like when Liam fires a subcontractor because of his mistreatment of dogs. I very much wanted all the best for them.
The real “characters” of the book, though, are the three dogs: playful lovable Jack Russell Luna, Australian shepherd Riggs, and labradoodle Archie. They also came across as believable and sympathetic, although I confess I cannot claim to have seen into a dog’s mind deeply enough to know if their feelings and reactions are true to life. Most of the story is from the viewpoint of the dogs as they suffer separation from their humans and, equally saddening, from each other. I cared about what would happen to them as much as I did the humans. Cameron truly shows the skills of a master storyteller as he traces the adventures of pack leader Riggs, energetic Luna, and six-month-old Archie, who is thrilled to have found a pack to join and does not want to lose it. As with the humans, there are wonderful little touches, such as when they compete by lifting their legs to see who would leave the final “mark” on a spot.
Before I even finished My Three Dogs I started making a list of all my doglover friends to make sure they hear about the book, but you do not have to be a dog person to get immersed into the world of Liam, Riggs, Luna, and Archie and their human companions.
I am delighted to have received an advance review copy of this wonderful book from NetGalley and Tor Publishing.
This is probably a very nice story for animal lovers, but it doesn't do anything for me. I can cuddle with a cat or dog, but it's not a need as it is for some people; those are the people who will likely love this story.
First- I did not finish the book and only read about a third of it. Cute, but just not for me.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy. Honest opinions expressed here are freely given.
A typically sweet W. Bruce Cameron book and fast read. When a tragic death separates three dogs, they are sent to the shelter for adoption. And, they are adopted, just not all together. Riggs, the loyal Australian shepherd is determined to get his pack back together. So starts the adventure and reunion.
As a dog lover, I was so excited to read this book. The story tracks three dogs in their journeys after losing their beloved owner. The author clearly understands dog behavior, and I loved how he described the different breeds spot on - from the goofy labradoodle to the intense Australian shepherd.
I was super worried about the dogs through much of the book, and I loved the portrayal of rescues - they are true heroes. I'd recommend this book to everyone who loves their dogs.
4.5 Stars
As a dog lover/owner for the last five decades, I gravitated towards this book. Also, the author is quite famous for his books involving dogs- many having been made into movies.
This book has a formula that grabs you by the heartstrings involving a romance, tragedy, and the dissolution of a happy pack of three dogs from their loving home. The author has a knack of getting inside the minds of dogs, where the reader gets the unique perspective of how dogs think and what's important to them: their "person", food/water, and their "pack". I found myself compulsively turning the pages in the hopes that by some miracle all would turn out well in the end and the people and dogs that loved each other so fiercely would be reunited. It was a charming, poignant, and satisfying read...and yes...I sincerely hope that it is made into a movie!
Thank you to the publisher Forge Books for providing an advance reader copy via NetGalley
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with this ARC. I have read a couple of the author’s books before and enjoyed them. He seems able to get inside a dog’s brain and translate what’s going on. In this story, three different breed dogs live with Liam, a commitment phobic man who lives with his unhappy girlfriend Sabrina. The pack is separated by a tragic accident and it is Riggs, the Australian shepherd who determines to get the pack (a Jack Russell and a very young labradoodle) together and find Liam. The author seems to capture the breed characteristics in their separate personalities. It’s the first book in a while that I read in one sitting!
I have always had a loving doggie in my family. I have seen the movie, “A Dog’s Purpose”. I know that author W. Bruce Cameron is a prolific and very popular author. But “My Three Dogs” is just way too saccharine for me.
The book is an easy and fast read and there are many charming scenes with the doggies. Riggs is a small Australian shepherd and the boss of the pack. Luna is loving, devoted to her owners, and is the smart dog. Archie is a labradoodle, need we say more? When their kind owner has a terrible accident, the doggies face a sad summer, as they go through a “Lassie Come Home” experience.
Any animal lover will adore this book. 5 stars to the author and Tor Publishing Group / Forge Books. Thanks to Net Galley for an advance digital review copy.
This is a different kind of love story, of a man who builds houses and a woman who has had several diverse occupations over the years. This begins with him bringing home yet another dog, and her needing a break, so she goes to stay at her sister’s house for what is intended to be a brief stay. Only…it doesn’t turn out that way, as there is an accident, and his brother is determined to keep her away from him. Permanently.
Meanwhile, the dogs are left in an animal shelter, at first temporarily, but the shelter can only keep them for so long. A little at a time each dog is ‘tried on’ by someone, some with a family with younger children, but the families seem to find fault in each of them over a relatively brief period of time. Over time, the dogs seem to take it upon themselves to leave, knowing they aren’t wanted, and wanting to return to their person - only he is no longer in the place they called home. Each of them attempts to find him, searching the places they used to go, and occasionally finding a human who offers them food.
Theirs is a long and winding journey, but ultimately one that is worthwhile when they find the place they can finally call home.

Many thanks for the ARC provided by Tor Publishing Group / Forge Books
W. Bruce Cameron has done it again, tugging at the heartstrings of dog lovers everywhere. Reading along while the 3 dogs lived through adventures both good and bad was an adventure in itself. There were several points that had me tearing up, as most of his books do. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Cameron never fails to write the perfect dog book and this one adds a bonus - a "love" story of how 3 dogs first tear a couple apart and then bring them back together. As always, Cameron adds a lot of tears in the book and even though these part are essential to the story - I cannot wait to get past them! Thanks for another GREAT dog story and for the advanced read!
I got an ARC of “My Three Dogs,” by W. Bruce Cameron and I have to say I didn’t want to put it down! The different personalities of the dogs had me hooked from the get go!The accident, the separation of the dogs from their people Liam and Sabrina, and their reactions about it pulled at my heartstrings! And if you have a rescue dog, like me, this story will pull at your heartstrings even more! Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing for this ARC.
This story starts with Liam and Sabrina. There are also 3 dogs. And - there's Brad, Liam's brother who is quite simply, a jerk. Liam is involved in a car crash and Sabrina isn't allowed to visit and believes Liam is dead. The three dogs are taken to the shelter. And that's about half way through the book. I had to get up and do laundry, vacuum the house - I couldn't handle what was happening. My fear was that one of the dogs would be killed - because there are books like that.
You'll have to read this yourself to see what happens to the 2 humans (minus jerk Brad) and the 3 dogs but I'll tell ya - I was pretty upset as the turn of events wound its way through the book. I actually scanned a few pages - desperate to see what would happen.
This book is best read with some beer - maybe some calming tea.
Right now I've got to put some meds on my fingers where I've chewed the nails off.
I was curious and excited to read a novel like this, and it didn't disappoint. It's not usually my usual genre to read, but I am now a super fan of this niche. I had such a great time. I am a huge fan of animal characters and wanted to see how it works in realiatic fiction. Why was I crying in several moments of this novel? So good.
This is a great way to intertwine the dogs personality, actions, their loyalty to their person with all the couple's emotions in the daily lives, the hardships, the ignorance and violence of others, the love of their family. It was very emotional and wonderful.
I will definitely pick up a book like this again. Every pet lover will relate to and love this story. Made it a perfect beach day.
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisger, for this e-arc.
