Most of us don't think much about credit unions, but we really should. This book is actually two memoirs/books in one. Clifford Rosenthal tells a story of working on the creation of credit unions and tells the story of how they have risen and fallen over time and what has contributed to that. Michael McCray has the boots-on-the-ground perspective of building a credit union that started with a black fraternity and what he learned when the credit union lost its charter. His portion of the book is very detailed and includes documents chronicling the demise of the Kappa Alpha Psi Federal Credit Union, which is fascinating for anyone curious about how banking and financing really works. This book asks a lot of questions about the role of government in helping to regulate credit unions and about the overall role of community finance in elevating people in need and righting major social wrongs.
