Lucy's father, a famous photographer, goes off to Arizona to work for two months right after they move into their house on a lake in New Hampshire. Trying to prove herself, Lucy decides to enter a photo contest with the help of her neighbor and new friend, Nate. As she navigates the social ups and downs of moving yet again, Lucy learns more about her neighbors, their quest to preserve the wild loons, and Grandma Lilah's slow decline. A moving novel about life and change. Highly recommended for grades 5-8.
This is spot-on for dealing with dementia in a straight-forward way in a children's book. It is so hard for kids to not be embarrassed by what is happening to people they love. Thank you, Ms. Lord. This is still a very timely book six years after publishing.
