Book 1 in Gwynne's acclaimed The Faith and the Fallen epic fantasy series.
It's certainly easy to see how/why Gwynne has gone on to be one of the most popular modern fantasy authors. This novel is very good: substantial, well-written, gripping, and tees things up nicely for the rest of the series.
If you're a fan of (modern) fantasy, then this is a must read.
