Elana Miller is a new agent partnered up with CIA Senior Field Agent Jon Carter. She is sent to Russia on her first assignment only to be sent home by Jon. He promised he would be home in a few months, only to become a famous arms dealer in Russian after partnering up with the Novalaks. The Novalaks is a family who are notorious Russian mobsters and arms dealer. Jon Carter (Jon Jacobs) as he is known to The Novalaks, is trying to bring the mobster family down, but missions in Europe and Russia keep failing. It seems the Novalaks are always one step ahead of the CIA Agents.
Deputy Director Max Kimball sends Elana back to Russia to bring Jon Carter home. According to Deputy Director Kimball, Jon has turned dirty and is no longer working for the United States, but instead for himself.

Pro: Suspenseful, Twists
Con: Other characters were added during the story line that distracted from the main characters.

Kyona Jiles has proven she is a master at espionage romance with Running Out of Time, just as she is with paranormal romance. This is the first book I read of her Running series, and I have to say, I was floored by how Ms. Jiles kept my attention immediately from the get go, up to the last page. Being an espionage story, I was a little wary, certain Ms. Jiles was going to loose my attention, but she kept the story full of excitement and adventure, as well as romance, thus making sure my attention stayed perfectly entertained throughout the entire book.

Jon and Elena.
Jon a CIA agent was assigned to train Elena before going on a secret mission. Jon was a loner who didn’t appreciate having a partner. He was a hard nosed assassin. Kimball, their boss, knew the odds and didn’t expect them to succeed. When it became evident that Elena was in danger Jon decided to send her home. He remained and was out of communication for many months. Elena was kept very busy by Kimball, being given assignment after assignment. The rumour was that Jon had become a traitor. Elena was given a young, inexperienced partner to train to go and kill Jon. It is a very fast moving, emotional and violent thriller. I couldn’t put it down! I am not sure I liked the ending, but I am thinking there will be a sequel. I will be the first to read it! I give it 4.1/2

I actually read the books in order. Definitely would have missed some references if I had not read the first book first. Jon Carter is off to Russia with a new partner. She is a desk gal so why put her in this big of a mission? But he will protect her. Then he sends her home. Why doesn't he come home soon? But he doesn't. The story revolves around his mission and how or if he will get home. Good ending, plenty of action and even a touch of romance. A good book.

Book#2 of Running Series

CIA Agent Jon Carter is a lone wolf but in his next mission he is paired with a newbie, Elana Miller, for an undercover job in Russia. Pretending to be lovers is their only way to face their nemesis and accomplish their task....Eventually things went south and the only way to get out of their predicaments was to play the game and then run for their lives.....and give us a thrill along the way...

This story is pretty engaging and held my attention throughout. The storyline is good and moves at a fast and steady pace and gives us a lot of visual scenes. The style is clear and easy to follow and gives us quite an unexpected ending....I love happy ending, not here. This story is a bit rough at times as Jon and Elana navigate the treacherous labyrinth of Blacks Ops. Their deadly dance between friends and foe definitely give us tension and all excitement desired. I loved these two, they are well- define and quite loveable. It is nice that the author did not forget to spice her story by adding a little bit of attraction between the two. A small break in tension was welcome.... Not a dull moment. Well-done and well-said.

I haven’t read the first book in this series and I can attest that “Running Out of Time” can be read as a standalone.

Beyond intense - action, betrayal, torture, kidnapping, hidden agendas, treason, spies, mafia, you name it. Never a dull moment, and emotions all over the place. Almost docked a star for that cliff at the end ...

An exciting and fast-paced story. The book is grittier than I usually read. Kyona Jiles has made me care so much about these characters that I overlook that which I don't enjoy seeing happening. The tale is complete within itself, but to read the entire series makes it even better. Kyona does leave us with a hint of wanting more. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

I really enjoyed reading this monster novella over the past couple of days. It was surprisingly sweet, funny, emotional, and even had a moment at the end where I teared up.
