As always, reviewing short story collections is hard, and all the harder when each story is written by a different author. That being said, Burning Down the House was a well done collection of a wide variety of tales that skirted different genres all in the name of a great cause. I am very hopeful that we get another collection like this again.
Special Thanks to Shotgun Honey Books and Netgalley for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.
Burning Down the House is a collection of twelve crime fiction short stories. They vary greatly in themes (abortion, sexual harassment, political dicatorship to name a few) and genres (literary fiction, dystopias, sci-fi, fantasy) but all have in common that that their title is a Talking Heads song. This was a great eye catching idea to bring in readers who may otherwise pass this book up. The introduction was informative and helped bind the stories together.
What’s great about a collection of stories is that there is something for everyone. What’s not so great about it, and the trouble with short stories in general, is that if you love a story, it may leave you wanting more.
I particularly enjoyed Road to Nowhere, Life During Wartime and Once in a Lifetime. I felt that overall the writing was excellent and so detailed, the characters vivid and the imaginations strong. I think fans of Stephen King would enjoy this set of stories as well as any crime fiction buffs.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shotgun Honey Books for my ARC.
