A book blogger and a hot alien neighbor light up the sky in this banter-filled young adult romance. I never expected to have a book crush on an alien, but I am glad Daemon is my first.
I went into this book blind and it was the best surprise. Katy is moving to a new town with her mother and they are both looking to start over. Starting her senior year at a new school will be tough, but hopefully, she can make a few friends along the way. Turns out her first friend is her neighbor, Dee. She is friendly, easy to talk to, and wow her brother is hot. Daemon is gorgeous and dreamy. Then he opens his mouth and he may just be the biggest jerk in West Virginia. That attitude should be a turn-off, so why does Katy still feel a connection?
Katy and Daemon run into each other a few times and always have a back-and-forth banter that is thrilling, exciting, and yes annoying (just ask Katy and Daemon). Dee is the catalyst for making them try to get along, but Daemon does not make it easy. Just when Katy thinks she has made progress and gotten him to let down his walls, he opens his mouth and shows off his arrogance.
I could not put this book down. I don't know why but I can't help falling for the bad boy and Daemon played his role to a T. Katy is just a joy to read about because she is so relatable. Bonus points because she is a bookworm. Add into the mix a supernatural theme and there you have a perfect read...for me! I can't recall ever reading a book featuring aliens but I did watch Roswell and I feel like I understood some themes because of it; like leaving a trace/mark, having special abilities, and the importance of keeping the secret. There was not a single thing that I didn't love about this book. Katy and Daemon are so charming even when they are hangry lol. I am so enthralled by this book that I already downloaded the rest of the books in the series. Sorry to the rest of the books on my TBR, I am busy reading The Lux series.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Katy and Daemon had the best banter. I loved everything about these characters. I immediately dived into the next book after finishing this one.
Katy and her mom moved to a small town in West Virginia to get a fresh start. She meets her neighbors next door, twins Dee and Daemon, who are her age, but notices right away they're not like anyone she's ever met before. Dee and Katy quickly become best friends, but Katy develops a very hot and cold relationship with Daemon. She can't stand him while still very attracted to him. As things progressively get weirder in town and strange things are happening, Katy realizes she may be in danger here. She's put in a position where she must rely on Daemon to stay safe, which makes her feelings all the more complex towards him.
Katy is a loveable character. She is smart, caring, and has a big heart. Daemon is very frustrating at times, but it comes from his very protective personality. The slow burn romance has a great build-up. The plot was unfolding in such a way that it sucked you into the next chapter and made you want to find out more. This is part of the Lux series and leaves off for you to go into the next book with the same characters, continuing their story. It was a very easy read and left you wanting more.
Holy shit I thought I was gonna end up bawling my eyes out at this one … now to go find the others in the series cause I might’ve spoiled myself with that bonus content soooooo
Thank you Entangled and NetGalley for a copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Such a fun high school book. If you enjoyed Twilight or Vampire Diaries this is a book for you. It has a broody MMC, the "weak," independent FMC. Great banter between the Daemon and Katy. Katy and Dee have a great friendship. It's full of twist and turns and fast paced story. It's engaging, quarky at times and the story is constantly moving. Absolutely enjoyed this so much.
This was a delightful read and I thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Katy and Daemon! A unique premise and plot delivered an enjoyable read. I’m looking forward to seeing this rerelease in person!
From Lala’s Book Reviews
Does one even want to know how many times I’ve reread this series when I was in high school? Maybe 4 or 5 times.
This is the first time I’d say in five years that I’ve read this book and have fallen in love with it all over again. Obsidian is one of the first books that I read in early high school that made me fall in love with paranormal romance.
And truth be told, it’s probably the first young adult book I have read in the last two or three years.
The story starts off with Katy and her mom as they are settling in from their move from Florida to West Virginia. Katy meets her wonderful neighbor Daemon life becomes a little more interesting espionage when his sister Dee wants to become friends with Katy.
Despite Katy’s less than stellar first impression of Daemon, she and Dee hits it off despite them being different. But soon, weird things starts to happen that don’t quite add up and Daemon brushes it off.
It seems like with Katy and Daemon, just when things are moving forward something happens that takes them back to square one.
When school starts back, it only gets worse with their relationship becomes even rockier and Katy finally learns what has been happening since she has moved to West Virginia.
There was some much that I forgot while rereading this book, and I fell in love with this story the same way I did the first time around as I got drawn into Katy and Daemon’s story with their banter and tension!
I could not stop reading this. I love all of the characters and finished this within 2 days. I now need to read the rest of the series. I need a physical copy of this for my bookshelf.
I was hooked from the beginning. I love Katy and Daemon’s hot and cold relationship although sometimes I wanted to punch Daemon for being so mean. I saw so many comparisons between this story and Twilight while reading yet this was its own story which I liked. I’m excited to see where the series takes me. Can’t wait to dive in to the next book.
Rating: 3.5/5
Thank you Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was intrigued by the premise of this book and fell in love with the cover.
A little skeptical about the extraterrestrial aspect, but pleasantly surprised with how this story played out.
I enjoyed reading about the MCs relationship and learning about what brought Daemon around. Learning what was the cause of all his moodiness.
Marketed as a YA romance, I found the writing not too juvenile and still appropriate for adult readers.
I’m on the fence about continuing the series, but will likely read the next book, or even the prequel.
I won a copy from entangled publishing, and I got to say thank you because this book was so much fun! At first I thought I’ll take my time but 6 chapters in, I wasn’t able to stop I will get the rest of the series because I want to know how this ends! I do recommend this book is a fast read and super easy to get into, characters are funny and the tension… so good!! I like the paranormal side of it I haven’t read too much of this genre with aliens and now I will pick up more books like this, all thanks to obsidian.Loved it!!
I saw this beautiful cover and decided I had to read this book. I'm so glad I did. I couldn't put it down, I was obsessed with these characters. Katy Swartz (17) recently moved to a small town in the middle of nowhere. She's smart, loyal, caring and patient. She loves reading books and posting about them on her blog. Daemon (18) is hostile, rude, protective and a bit arrogant. His twin sister, Dee wants to be Katy's best friend and he's having none of it. There's something weird going on in this small town and Katy can't seem to put her finger on what that is. We watch as Katy and Daemon drive each other nuts. The back and forth is awesome. I was all over the place emotionally while reading this book. Teenage angst at it's best, it definitely reminded me of high school. I loved this so much I preordered the hardcover and will be reading the rest of the series.
I want to say thank you to Brittany and Riki and entangled teen publishing and to the author for this amazing opportunity to read this arc.
I was lucky enough to join in for the read along. But I read the whole book in three day. 🫣
It’s sooo good.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
🌶️/spice I give it a one, because I feel like it’s still building and I know it’ll be more when I read the other books.
This book, literally captivated me right off the start. It kept me on my toes. My heart swoon over Daemon. He reminded me off so much like Damon from the vampire diaries how he and Elena used to be.
It gave me I am number 4 vibes. But I never read the book I watched the movie way back when. But reading this I soooo want to keep reading books like this.
Thank you so much again. Loved every second of it. I’m just sad that it’s over.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to read this arc.
Overall this was a fun read. As you are taken through the journey of Katy having her life picked up and moved it was enjoyable seeing her try to take control and allow herself to do things she normally wouldn’t. The back and forth banter was top tier. This story kept my interest and was a quick read.
The angst, the drama, the banter, and the undeniable chemistry! Kat and Daemon had me desperate for more throughout the whole entire book!
The tough guy bully vibe did things to me and getting to read snippets of his POV at the end made me love him even more! And can we talk about the way he called her kitten 🥵 I loved that so much!
It was so cool seeing Kat become bolder and more confident! And Dee, how could you not love sweet Dee!
The whole book had me on my toes and I honestly didn’t see half of it coming. But that ending?! The way he challenged her and she challenged him right back?! I ran to download book 2 to find out what happens next!
“If there is anything, there is us.” 🥺❤️
Why why why did I put this off for so long?!?! As soon as I started, I was completely hooked! The banter and mystery is so good!
Katy has just moved to a small town right next door to twins, Daemon and Dee. Daemon is judgmental and dislikes Katy from the start, while his sister is warm and friendly. Katy and Dee become close friends, despite Daemon’s rude behavior. Of course Daemon is gorgeous and Katy can’t help but be drawn to him. Katy gets a feeling there’s more to him and Dee, which starts her down a path that puts herself and others in danger.
After that ending, I’m immediately jumping into the next book! How could it end like that?! This is a fantastic YA paranormal romance. Can’t recommend it enough
I was given the opportunity to read this by Entangled and NetGalley. I really enjoyed this story. I’ve read a ton of shifter/vampire/other worldly stories but none with this exact trope. I loved the story line. The characters were likable and the banter between the FMC and MMC was fun. I did find the back and forth between them a little redundant at times. I cannot wait to finish the series!
"Obsidian" is a captivating blend of romance and science fiction that kept me hooked from start to finish. The dynamic between Katy and Daemon is electrifying, and I couldn't get enough of their witty banter and undeniable chemistry. The intergalactic twist added an exciting dimension to the story, keeping me on the edge of my seat with each new revelation. Armentrout's seamless blend of suspense, mystery, and humor created a thrilling reading experience that I won't soon forget. If you're looking for a gripping page-turner that will transport you to another world, "Obsidian" is the perfect choice.
Entangled has the best books and this one was super great.
I absolutely loved the alien theme. The electrical romance between Katy and Daemon, was so hot. I loved the quips back anf forth between the two and their love/hate banter.
The book contains a bit of danger and mystery which were a big plus.
I wont give anything away, but you so do not want to miss this one. It gave me twilight vibes.
I read in on and off over the course of two days.
It is an easy fast read.
I need more!
Five stars!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for this super fantastic book.
Yet another JLA series that sucks me in! Goes along the same fun romantic paranormal vibes as Dark Elements and Harbinger. It feels like a really cozy feel good read even amidst the many high stakes plot twists and paranormal mysteries! As usual Jen gives us a relatable FMC (with a love of gardening!) and love interest with great banter (you know JLA loves the banter!) that has me rooting for their love to beat the odds! The plot itself is well paced, and we are given ample time to truly get to know our main characters and learn why we will root for them going forward. It finds a way to be both believable and fantastical without feeling heavy handed. The throw back terminology to when this was written was also really fun and will speak a love language to the book bloggers of the Twilight Saga era that will never be forgotten! It’s a perfect set up for the high stakes journey our characters take in Lux and gives plenty of easter eggs that will be such a joy to reread once you have devoured this series! Definitely make sure you check out the full reading order so you do not miss out on the prequel novella Shadows and the other novellas in this series that are IMO vital to the full scope of the plot. A must read for paranormal and urban fantasy YA romance lovers, but please know the spice level is YA, so this is not the same as FBAA etc this is a true YA story.
Thank you to Entangled for the ebook ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts
