We loved this little dragon. Reading about him and his emotions was so fun! The kindergarten kids loved it!
This picture book is a great way to help children understand and find words for their feelings of nervousness. It was well written, and the pictures are very cute. I think this is a beneficial book for both kids and adults.
Cute illustrations, and the main lesson that you go to school to learn so don't be nervous about not knowing things beforehand is a good one for little kids.
But maybe I read too much into it - but shouldn't his parents or sister have already told him that dragons don't know how to breath fire until they are taught? I'm also not sure I agree with the teacher's tactics - asking her students with no instruction to do something she knows they can't do right off the bat on the first day? It's amazing the rest of the dragons weren't scared too!
Cute little story about a dragon who is nervous about his first day at school. He goes on to discover that school is a place of learning and that we all have things we can improve upon. A nice read for anyone looking to beat the first day of school blues and give their kids a bit of a confidence boost.

It’s Blaze’s first day of school, and he’s nervous because he doesn’t know how to breathe fire. Fortunately when he gets to school, he discovers that he’ll be learning how to breathe fire along with all of his new friends.
OK, I have very mixed feeling about this book. Yes, it’s cute and would probably be fine for a kid who is nervous about the first day of school. It could certainly be used to start a conversation about why the kiddo is feeing nervous. However, I don’t understand why it was a secret that Blaze couldn’t breathe fire, and why Blaze’s parents didn’t tell him it was okay that he couldn’t breathe fire and that he’d be learning it at school. Also, why would the teacher ask to see their fire breathing on the first day, if they aren’t expected to know how to do it? It’s like asking a kindergartener to read you a book on the first day. It feels like the publisher had an idea and wanted to make it happen, even if it didn’t quite make sense.
Super cute and meaningful book! I know that so many kids everywhere will be able to relate to Blaze in some way, and his story will inspire them to be brave at school and be unafraid to learn new things. There was a clear plot, with a beginning, middle, and end that really helped the story flow well. Additionally, the writing was simple, but in a good way. It made it so that the story didn't get too clunky or overwhelming, which worked greatly. Lastly, the illustrations were crisp and very colorful, perfect for young readers. This book will definitely become a very useful tool for kids that are about to start school and might be anxious about it.
Bravo!

Blaze the dragon is about to have his first day of school, but he’s feeling a little nervous. Unlike all of the best dragons, Blaze can’t breathe fire! But with a little help from his teacher and his friends, he learns that school is a place where you can learn how to do all sorts of new things. This is a cute one for calming back to school (or start of school) jitters.
Perfect for my little dragon. When going to school for the first time, or back to school, it can be a scary time. In this wonderful story we get to follow Drago and everything he experiences as he gets ready for the first day of school. Even though he is excited to go he is worried and nervous. We learn along with Drago how to get through those first time butterflies and talk about how we feel. It is a great book to open up conversations about how your little one maybe feeling and what they could be worried about. The illustrations are so colorful and absolutely adorable. Along with the simple easy to follow text the illustrations add to this wonderful story. It will be a new favorite for your little one. My son loves dragons and this was perfect for him. Enjoy Drago’s adventure together.
It's Blaze's first day of school and he is really nervous! Once at school Blaze learns that it is okay to not know everything and school is a place to learn.
This book would be great for kids to read before their first day of school.
My little one is too young to go to school just yet, however, he still enjoyed this short story. He loves dragons and enjoys the illustrations. A great read to add to your library. Perfect for those first day jitters of littles.
The Nervous Dragon follows a young fire-breathing dragon preparing to go to school without knowing how to breathe fire. The dragon, Blaze, is self conscious about not knowing this skill and is nervous about how his classmates will react.
This was a fantastic book to read about with young kids! We enjoyed watching Blaze’s journey as he faced his fears and learned that sometimes new things are hard at first.
Cute story. Would be great to read before your child starts school. Great message to help a child learn that we all have these fears and doubts of not being ‘good enough’ at things.
I LOVE this book! This is a great social story for students who struggle academically or have a difficult time with anxiety. Students can relate to feeling nervous about something new and how others learn at different paces. This would be a great addition to the teacher's library for read-aloud and student discussions!
Such a cute book on overcoming first-day-of-school worries and believing in yourself! My 4 year old loved this book and asked to read it every night 4 nights in a row. The pictures are well done and the text flows nicely when read aloud. I had to explain a few things to my son (such as what having butterflies in your stomach means), but other than that it was easy for him to follow along. My only critique is that the book ended very abruptly, I wish there was just 1 more page of him going home at the end of the day to tell his family about his first day of school to wrap it all up.
This book is an adorable method of teaching your little how to navigate the emotions of their first day of school jitters. The illustrations were cute and colorful & the story just long enough for their little attention spans.
The Nervous Dragon is an adorable illustrated board book for the youngest kids about conquering anxiety and back-to-school jitters. Due out 4th June 2024 from DK on their Children's imprint, it's 18 pages and will be available in board book and ebook formats.
Everyone is nervous about a big change. Little dragon Blaze is nervous about his first day at school. What will happen if everyone laughs at him or makes fun of his big secret. Even though his dad packs his lunch, his sister holds his hand on the way to school, and their teacher Miss Claw tries to make everyone feel welcome, he's still very nervous and unsure of himself.
The story is reassuring, adorable, and full of appealing illustrations. The free verse is simple and easy to read.
Five stars. It would make a good choice for public or school/classroom library, home use, or gift giving.
