A great book that is perfect for any classroom, school, or home libarary. So much great information and beautiful pictures to encourage the young learner!
I wish I had this book as a kid. Once again the team at DK books knocked this one out into space. The art is so immersive, detailed and varied. The ideas while complicated are engrossing and explained in a clear and concise way that it is appealing to the very young and young at heart.
It’s a wonderful book to add to any classroom, library or homeschooling environment. If you’ve ever read a DK science book before this is a no brainer and if you haven’t give your self a little treat and buy one.
This review was originally published on NetGalley.com. I was given an ebook freely by NetGalley and the book’s publisher in return for a voluntary and honest review.
A book that asks scientific questions and then answers those questions along with providing beautiful photos. Definitely created for middle age children but this book would be a great resource for parents needing answers for their curious little ones.
This is a great volume of everything you wanted to know about Earth Science. It's laid out in an easy-to-understand format (as with all DK encyclopedias) and combines full-color photos with bite-sized chunks of text. Everything from weather to tides to magnetism to volcanoes to the formation of gemstones is covered in a way that's easily digestible to kids age 9-12. My 10-year-old is the perfect age for it (and loves DK encyclopedias) and it's immediately gone on the Christmas list.
Some of the text is written in a sort of fancy italic script that is a little hard to read, but that's my only quibble with it.
*Thanks to NetGalley and DK Children for providing an early copy for review.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. If you know of a kid who loves to learn about science, rocks, and the earth, this book is for them. DK books do such a great job of explaining difficult concepts to kids.
Explanatorium of the Earth is a useful and fascinating encyclopedia of geoscience facts curated and illustrated by DK, under the auspices of the Smithsonian. Released 21st May 2024 by Penguin Random House on their DK imprint, it's 288 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a beautifully illustrated guide absolutely packed with graphics, charts, tables, and interesting facts about planet Earth. It's aimed at youngsters (circa 9-12 years), but there are lots of takeaways for all ages. The art and photography are clear and vibrant and it's a really engaging read.
The book introduces the planet in context, from formation some 4.5 billion years ago, through the physical characteristics, composition, volcanoes and earthquakes, landscapes and formations, rocks and minerals (SO much good info here), the atmosphere, the biosphere, and a collection of reference charts and info including caves, rivers, mountains, and much (much) more.
Five stars. This is a useful reference and would be a great selection for public, school, or home library acquisition. Accessible for the target audience (middle grade readers) but certainly not *just* for them.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Superbly written with amazing photographs to pair. DK never disappoints when it comes to their nonfiction collection! This will be a staple for families at the library and in their homes.
