If the author wanted to you dislike this FMC then they definitely hit the mark with this one! You equal parts root for her and think good gawd she’s horrible. The dog thing was inexcusable. Other than that I loved the story, the plot, the twist, great fun read.
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance review copy in return for an honest review. This book was good but I felt like I was missing something. I feel like the book could have been a little more refined.
Bad Men is a really entertaining read following a female serial killer who only kills men who hurt others. But she’s also a highly manipulative stalker who’s obsessed with a true crime podcast host. This book is a fast paced, sometimes funny, sometimes gruesome mystery thriller. The narrator was great but I do think the audiobook would have benefited from two narrators since the book had alternating point of views. I also thought the ending was a little predictable but I enjoyed it nonetheless, and would be interested in reading more by this author.
Yes yes and yes
I need more from Julie Mae Cohen!
I devoured this audiobook within 24 hours. Great dark humor, great pace, great character development.
This was gifted to me by Netgalley & the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
We are following a serial killer. she only kills people in her free time. And someone has to do it..right? She's making the world a better place, by killing BAD MEN. She also has a secret that has absolutely nothing to do with her job. She has a gigantic crush and she wants to make him her boyfriend while also plotting murder.
This book was blurrbed by Clare Mackintosh, who I have enjoyed reading from. However, this book was not the vibes that I was expecting. I wanted a cozy/funny vibe and this did not deliver on that for me
3.5 rounded up to a 4. This book was cleverly written. The narrator did a great job! However, I was torn in between liking the main character and despising her. It was a good listen!
This was a fun and different thriller about a female serial killer who falls for a true crime podcaster and becomes obsessed. The humour and mystery was balanced in a captivating way and I really liked how the characters were unpredictable and kinda delusional.
The story is fast paced and has flashbacks to Saffy's past, and you're immediately intrigued by her choices and weird personality. Some parts of the story were a bit too gory for my taste and I could figure out the big twist at the end quite early on, but other than that it was an entertaining read!
GREAT book to listen to via audiobook. I loved learning about the characters and their dark secrets. The way this book was written makes it easy to follow the various characters throughout the story. Girl power :)
I love when women are out for vengeance.
Sapphy has been killing bad men since she was a teen. She gets absolutely fascinated with a podcaster/author wants him to notice her. What lengths will she go to in hopes of being in his life?
It was a fun premise. I don’t know if it was a combination of not really liking any of the characters and pacing but I was quite bored for a lot of it. Soz.
Thanks to netgalley and RB Media for an advanced listening copy.
Bad Men by Julie Mae Cohen was a light mystery with a female character that gets sidetracked by her crush. The narrator was great.
This was such a quick thriller I cruised through! It gave They Never Learn, vibes which is one of my favorite books ever. The only thing that really knocked it down a star for me was that it was SO MUCH like They Never Learn. So many pieces of the book were incredibly predictable. I think if I hadn't read that first, this would have been a five for me. I really enjoyed this and will definitely recommend it to thriller lovers!
4 stars - A really enjoyable thriller that was a little predictable in places. It was well written and the pacing was good, along with generally liking the main characters I enjoyed the book. However, this might not be what people are expecting - I was expecting something akin to You but felt it was more of a generic thriller, which people may not be expecting. It also feels like a snapshot of a story with the possibility of a sequel rather than a standalone. That being said, I think most thriller readers would enjoy this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and RB Media for providing me with a digital audio galley in exchange for my honest review.
Bad Men is a romantic thriller which specializes in making its morally grey shaded protagonist seem like she’s only doing what has to be done. Included but not limited to throwing a dog down a well to attract a very specific suitor. Poor Girl.
Saffy, the female Dexter only kills bad men. Men who have committed violences against women. And despite her early flailing, and inability to check for security cameras, she buds into a successful serial killer. It does help that she’s a socialite and above police discrimination.
And as a serial killer, she studies other killers and the author of a world famous true crime podcast, Jonathon Desrosiers. While everything for Saffy is going just according to plan, Jon’s life seems to be falling apart.
As a reader, you are never sure how much of this is Saffy’s doing or if another stalker is waiting for Jon in the wings.
It was a fast, fun read. A great entry level read for the Tiktok romance girlies who want to transition to thrillers.
Love love loveee this book! I listened to the audiobook actually, the narration is good and clear, I appreciate the narrator’s effort of having change to different accent and sound / tone to differentiate others characters throughout the whole story.
The writing is good, I love how the author didn’t missed to include details of killing or victims and scenes. I can easily imagined how every plot goes on like a movie in my head, despite having third person pov sometimes in its writing - which I didn’t really fancy to be honest, but I’m glad that the third person pov writing in this book doesn’t ruined the plot or make me confuse or anything throughout reading / listening, not like they usually does for others.
Love the plot growth and each main characters as well, and how part of the story can make me ponder upon certain things as well as other parts that I can relate to as well. It’s also brilliantly contain subtle hints of SA’d in the earliest and then some part of the chapters, as well as some minor gore details, family / marriage issues, life, feminism / women empowerment, and more - which I enjoyed and appreciate how those been included and kinda can be an eye opener to some, I think.
There’s also a minor surprise towards the end, which I also appreciate as it does make the whole story more interesting. Overall, I enjoyed this book truly, thank you so much for the ARC! ❤️
Title: A Wickedly Fun Thriller with a Feminist Twist
Rating: 4 Stars
Bad Men by Julie Mae Cohen is a wickedly fun and twisty feminist thriller that captivates from the very first page. With its irresistible premise and complex characters, this novel is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
At the heart of the story is Saffy Huntley-Oliver, a glamorous socialite with a dark secret—she's a proficient serial killer who hunts down and dispatches "bad men" who commit heinous crimes against women. Cohen expertly crafts Saffy as a complex and compelling protagonist, blurring the lines between right and wrong as she navigates the murky waters of morality and justice.
The introduction of Jonathan Desrosiers, a true-crime podcaster who becomes the prime suspect in a murder case, adds an intriguing layer of suspense to the narrative. As Saffy becomes increasingly obsessed with helping Jon clear his name, the tension escalates, leading to a thrilling and unpredictable climax.
One of the novel's strengths lies in its darkly comic tone, which adds an element of levity to the otherwise grim subject matter. Cohen's sharp wit and clever dialogue keep the story engaging and entertaining, even as it delves into darker themes of violence and revenge.
Additionally, Bad Men offers a refreshing take on the traditional thriller genre with its feminist perspective. Through Saffy's character, Cohen explores themes of female empowerment and agency, challenging traditional gender roles and expectations. This feminist lens adds depth and complexity to the narrative, making it more than just a typical whodunit.
While Bad Men is undeniably a thrilling read, it is not without its flaws. At times, the pacing can feel a bit uneven, with certain plot twists feeling rushed or underdeveloped. Additionally, some readers may find the resolution of certain plot threads to be somewhat predictable.
Overall, Bad Men is a wildly entertaining thriller that offers a fresh take on the genre. With its compelling characters, dark humor, and feminist themes, it's sure to appeal to fans of suspenseful fiction. Julie Mae Cohen has crafted a novel that is both thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable, making it a must-read for anyone looking for a gripping page-turner with a twist.
I can honestly say, I never read a book like this one. It was funny (shout out to Saffy’s sister Suzy), had a lot of murders and murder victims and strangely, it had me rooting for the, morally, more than gray character. Dark, funny and an entertaining read.
2.5 Stars ~
This was just okay for me. Quite underwhelming if I am honest.
Daffy has a secret, she is a serial killer, targeting very bad men. But she has her eyes set on John as a potential new fling, who happens to be a true crime podcaster.
Some body parts show up in John’s garbage bin, which in turn makes him a suspect.
The ending felt quite rushed and I guess it just wasn’t my favourite.
Thank you NetGalley for the AudioARC in return for an honest review.
This was a good book. I enjoyed the vigilante killer aspect of the book. Saffy admits to killing people, but she has a good reason for each and every one of them. This book had some dark humor which made it that much more enjoyable. The twist at the end was great!
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was good, different voices for different character. I thought the ending was pretty predictable but in all fairness, I read and watch A LOT of thrillers. I would definitely read another by this author, especially a sequel with these characters. Recommend this one for a quick, thriller read.
I loved this book, even more than I thought I would just by the synopsis. Anything with the words "serial killer" in a thriller book is pretty much a guarantee for me, but Bad Men had me intrigued by more than just that. Saffy is a killer, but she's also falling in love. She's funny, unpredictable, and honestly someone I could picture myself being friends with. I loved the Dexter vibes, and the fact that there's a dog named Girl pretty much nailed this one for me. The narration is absolutely perfect. Even though I just finished this one, I'm already looking forward to Julie Mae Cohen's next brilliant novel.
