This book was requested when I was young and requested more books than I could possibly read. Sadly, I no longer have access to this book and my tastes have changed. Thus I will not be able to give feedback on this title.
The Basics:
This is a Contemporary Romance narrated by Darby Quinn, a thirty-year-old who no longer believes in love. She’s an interior decorator and has all of her exes catalogued into neat case studies to help her avoid making the same mistakes again.
My Thoughts:
I absolutely love the premise of Cinderella Screwed Me Over. I’m sure we can all relate on some level about Disney princesses, Rom-Coms, and romance media in general giving us unrealistic expectations about love and relationships. Well, Darby took it to a whole other level. She fit all of her exes into the prince archetypes and came to the conclusion that relationships are not forever. You can have fun for awhile, but then someone is going to get hurt. Then she met Jake and has to put all of her notes to good use, but epicly fails at following her own rules.
It took me a little bit to get into Cinderella Screwed Me Over, because Darby came across as quite unlikable in the beginning. She’s described as honest, which is great, but she’s actually just rude. She blurts out whatever comes into her mind and has no filter. On their first meeting, she immediately calls Jake a liar because he said he’s the owner of her favorite restaurant. Apparently, in her mind, all men are liars, and restaurants are not owned by anyone. They just exist for her eating pleasure. The restaurants, not men. Although…anyway. She makes quick judgements about people to fit her world view. She was just a mess, but thankfully she gets it together when she puts her foot in her mouth one too many times.
Cinderella Screwed Me Over is super predictable, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I read enough Romance novels that the formula doesn’t bother me. This is a story we all know too well: Jaded person swears off love, then falls head over heels. Jake was good for Darby. I loved that he called her out on her crap. I was nearly cheering during their inevitable breakup (can you even break up with someone if you swear you’re not dating?!), which is not something I ever do. But she needed to hear everything that he had to say.
In the end, I did enjoy Cinderella Screwed Me Over. I love fairy tales and this was a fun anti-fairy tale twist.
Darby had always believed in fairy tales and that she would one day find her prince charming but at the age of 30 she not only gave up this endeavor but simply created an aversion to men. She just can not believe now that gentle and kind Jake can be what she needs and what he seems.
But Darby will be able to prove and show how all her supposed princes have become frogs. Narrated in the first person, Darby introduces each of her relationships in comparison to a famous fairy tale and as Jake insists on a relationship, Darby is avoiding the guy more and more and whenever she can she look for a defect in the guy.
I laughed a lot in several scenes, I was also distressed by Jake and I was very angry with the girl but I found it interesting to accompany Darby and her crazy and how the plot shows a girl who has aversion to commitment and not a boy like most books.
I liked that it was centered in the maturing of the girl and not in showing that someone only has the happiness if it finds its half face and that there are no princes enchanted and perfect without any defect.
Darby is done with Cinderella. She's had horrible dates and just can't find her Prince Charming. So she's done. Over it. Over HEAs and her not getting one. What's funny is her going through each of her exes and comparing them to a Disney Prince and why they weren't actually the Prince.
Then she meets her hot neighbor and manager of her local restaurant. Which is a perfect sign that she can't get involved with Jake no matter how much she wants to. She doesn't get involved with men in her comfort places because when it goes bad, she loses the place.
This was a good, funny read that any woman over 30 can relate to. Especially if your family wants you to get married and pop out a few kids.
ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Loved this funny emotional read. I also love Darcy's fairy tale case studies. After Darcy's failed relationships she not interested in find Prince Charming but Jake is determined to convince her he's the one. Love Jake, he's so patient. Darcy was forced to a point where she had to make a decision to choose love or be alone. Recommended Read
I have no idea how I missed this book but I'm so glad I found it!!
Darby has had the *worst* luck with men and has reasoned that Cinderella and all of the other fairy tales have set unrealistic expectations for what a relationship is supposed to be. She has analyzed all of her past loves and decided that she is done with finding happily ever after. When she meets Jake, she compares him to every one she's ever dated, constantly looking for flaws, except that she can't find any. What follows is one of the funniest couples I have ever read. I laughed more during this story than anything else in recent memory.
Jake is the definition of perfect. He has the patience of a saint dealing with Darby and all of her hangups about men. There wasn't a gauntlet thrown that he wasn't willing to pick up. Darby has dealt with her fair share of nightmares in relationships and her reluctance was understandable but, if I could have knocked some sense into her, I would have. Jake is just that great!
A fun read. It's cute and a little sassy. Darby is one that tells it how it is. She's afraid to let love in and doesn't want to get her heartbroken no matter what the cause. Then enter Jake. I love Jake. He never gave up no matter how many walls Darby continued to put up and how many times she pushed him away. He knew what he wanted and wasn't afraid to work for it. Darby has all these rules and her case studies of past relationships that she lives by. And well she's okay with it until Jake. He was one she never saw coming. I love the chemistry between them. I love the fight and fire in Darby. This was an amazing read.
