This Will Be Fun by E.B. Asher is like a cross between The Magicians and Shrek. The basic premise is four best friends save the world but then ten years go by and their lives are decidedly not Happily Ever Afters. The setting and voice of the novel are both quite campy which makes for a fun if a bit trite read. I particularly enjoyed reading about the characters interpersonal lives and their relationship dynamics but the overly modern dialogue took me out of the story more than once. Overall, this book was a fun, fine time. It's not amazing but it's not awful either.
Beatrice, Elowen, and Clare are Heroes of Mythria, the last remaining members of The Four. And they haven’t seen each other in ten years. Not since the fateful day they saved their Queendom from evil and lost their beloved leader, Galwell, in the process. Now they’re reluctantly gathering to celebrate their Queen’s upcoming nuptials. What was supposed to be a quick visit has turned into a rescue mission. Queen Thessia’s fiancé Hugh has been kidnapped by the same heinous villains the Heroes defeated ten years ago. Beatrice, Elowen, and Clare each have their own reasons for accepting this new quest…guilt, loneliness, love, but in order to be successful they must make peace with their pasts and each other. Accompanied by former assassin and questing troublemaker Vandra, Mythria’s Heroes set out on their new adventure not knowing what awaits them. Will they get a chance at redemption or will everything be taken from them a second time?
E.B. Asher’s This Will Be Fun is exactly that…fun! It has everything. Action! Adventure! Humor! Heartbreak! Magic! Mayhem! Legendary Heroes! Dastardly Villains! In the same vein as The Princess Bride, This Will Be Fun brings the sarcasm, wit, and snarky banter while also exploring more serious themes of grief, death, and trauma. It’s the perfect blend of everything you could ever want in an epically grand escapade. And you can’t forget about the romance! Our three Heroes have all experienced the highs of love and the lows of heartbreak and they are desperately trying to trust each other again, sometimes with mixed and hilarious results. Each of these incredible characters is on a path of self-discovery and healing, things that are vitally important in order for them to overcome their pasts and save their futures. These aren’t your typical Heroes. They are all flawed but beautifully written and they’re dragging the reader along on their wild ride to find absolution for past mistakes. A quipy, hysterical, romantic romp!
DNF @ 25%
I requested an arc of this cause it was comp as Princess Bride meets People We Meet on Vacation. It was the latter in the sense of a second chance romance, but not the former. It was more like the movie version of Ella Enchanted where they’re doing that weird modern pop culture stuff but make it fantasy. And I forgot that I kind of hate that. But the main reason I’m DNFing, even though I kept reading another chapter hoping it got better, was because I just couldn’t connect to the characters. On paper they sounded interesting, sort of like Veronica Roth’s Chosen Ones with these heroes a decade later kind of struggling with life post saving the world, but I couldn’t care less about these guys. I can see it trying to get me to care but it wasn’t sticking the landing. It wasn’t helped the amount of telling and internal monologue and those are also often the bane of my existence.
I think this book can definitely be enjoyed by people, but sadly it wasn’t for me. And sadly the characters just couldn’t convince me to stay.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for providing an advance reader copy of this book for my honest review.
This Will Be Fun follows a group of friends who once united to save the world, but have grown estranged over the years. Now ten years later, the friends are reluctantly reunited at the Queen’s wedding. But old habits die hard, and even heroes need some saving every once and awhile.
I picked this book as it was dubbed a mash up of The Princess Bride and People We Meet on Vacation, two solid stories that I loved. I also had no idea that one of my favorite writing duos, Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka were contributors to the collective E.B. Asher moniker. Although I didn’t end up finishing this one, I could feel their imprint within the story. Unfortunately, fantasy isn’t my go to genre, so where I probably would have embraced a story where friends with baggage come together and hash things out, the fantastical aspects of this novel were just too distracting and ultimately, not for me.
To be fair, fans of genre mashups like romantasy might love this one and if that’s your jam, I’d definitely say give it a try. It’s just for this reader that This Will Be Fun wasn’t as much fun as I hoped.
2.5 stars. The story is super fun but the pacing and worldbuilding are ALL over the place.
I really enjoyed the central storyline and characters: the author did a good job of creating characters who struggled to recover from the events of ten years ago. The interpersonal relationships were incredibly important to the plot and drove the action.
But the pacing - it took FOREVER for the actual plot to kick in, and then we kept getting sidetracked by silly interludes. The fight to the big bad lacked tension - and since the story sped through these parts, there wasn’t a satisfying ending.
Overall it felt like they tried to cram in as many fantasy versions of real life things that they forgot to make the plot drive. Very disappointing, as the story and characters are super fun.
Thank you to NetGalley, E.B. Asher, and Avon Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The premise sounded good but I had to DNF @ 33%.
In the 10 chapters I read, nothing happened. I was promised a quest and all the 3 POVs had done so far was make reference to their previous quest in very vague mentions. The cozy fantasy world was no developed at all. There are devices that are brought up and never mentioned again. The magic is very loosely explained but other than that it’s just “magic”. There are so many modern elements that they tried to weave into the fantasy but instead, it took me completely out of this world.
The story is very disjointed overall but then I found out this was written by 3 people. It definitely shows.
This might be better suited for people who don’t typically read fantasy.
This Will Be Fun should maybe have a caveat of “this will also be emotional” because for the first half of the book, the main characters are all at odds with some deep, emotional, grieving wounds. I’m rating this 3 stars because it seemed a little disjointed to me, like it couldn’t quite pick a lane to stick to.
I really enjoyed the D&D campaign feel and the general world building, though I think that could have been fleshed out more. The “Big Bad” was a little one note and it didn’t seem to me that the authors did enough with it.
Overall, a solid 3.75 star read that just could have been great. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I believe this to be very much a character driven story. The main point of it is them and the struggles they face in the beginning and how it affects their relationships.
I had a hard time with the writing style at the beginning of the book. For the first 1/3rd of it I struggled. There isn’t a ton of world building. The magic system seemed like it could be interesting but there wasn’t a ton of development in that area.
The last 2/3rds were really fun and cute. I loved the characters and it ended up with a bit of adventure in the end. Very much a cozy read.
Legends and Lattes meets Chosen Ones in this fun cozy quest romantasy by E.B. Asher, a superstar lineup writing group. This Will Be Fun centers on Beatrice, Elowen, and Clare members of the legendary group of The Four that rescued Mythria from evil ten years ago. But the quest that saved their Queendom was not without its trials and the heroes have dealt with the fallout and fame differently as the years passed. So when they’re drawn to reunite for the Queen’s wedding they must confront their pasts and futures, evaluate their relationships with one another, and decide if they’ll rise to Mythria’s need for another quest. Chalked full of interesting magic, delectable coffee shops and world building (think ala entering Far Far Away montage in Shrek 2) hilarious laughs, romantic tension, and heartfelt moments this book packs it all.
I was in a horrible reading slump and nothing could pull me out of it until this book. I absolutely didn’t want to put this book down. It was fun, funny, full of twists that kept the pacing, had characters (Vandra can do no wrong in my eyes!) and relationships I was routing for, and had emotional development. This Will Be Fun is a master craft in what the subgenre of cozy fantasy can be. Epic series are amazing but sometimes readers need a story like This Will Be Fun. I’ll definitely be purchasing this one to keep on my shelf and reread when I need a ‘palate cleanser’ from weighty epic series but I’m still in a fantasy mood.
First off, thank you to Avon and Harper Voyager publishing as well as NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for a review!
I was so excited to receive an ARC of this particular book because I had read several reviews saying "Its giving Princess Bride!!" As someone who grew up obsessed with that kind of soft fantasy- think Princess Bride, Ella Enchanted, Ever After, Shrek(?!) -- this book had a plot i could not resist.
Instead of dropping readers into the midst of a conflict with a great evil or focusing on the tension leading up to a battle, This Will Be Fun opens with three Heroes of the land who are estranged and at odds with each other, and with themselves. Ten years prior, the trio were close as could be- and in fact they were not a trio, but a group of four. In their battle to save the land, they lost Galwell the Great, a beloved friend and brother to one of their group.
At present, we follow the lives of the remaining three: Beatrice- newly divorced, a mess, and still harboring both love and hate for her ex; Clare- using and abusing his hero status to achieve "playboy" status, also secretly holding on to equal parts affection and anger for his ex (none other than Beatrice); and Elowen- sister to Galwell the Great, she completely withdrew from society after their heroic quest in order to preserve her feelings.
A royal wedding brings them together once more, as the Queen requests their presence and will not be denied. Once reunited, they find themselves once again in a position that they need to save the land. A tale of redemption, friendship and forgiveness shows this trio finding a path forward once more.
This book was a delightful blend of fantasy with a medieval era feel, and modern touches- tapestry smart phones, a ride share carriage service! I think anyone who enjoys a cozy fantasy would devour this!
This was a really cute fantasy romance that highlights two second chance romances. The world was set in a modern world. This reads like a romantic comedy, but there is sort of a quest aspect to it. The world building was strong, but got lost in some places. I had some issues with the magic system, I felt like it wasn't completed and was just missing something.
I was not able to finish this book. It started somewhat interesting with the prologue, but then we spend a next big chunk of the book in relationship issues and learning about the people after all the action has passed. I know it's supposed to pick up at some point, but I found myself dreading having to continue reading to try to get that point. I didn't connect with the characters or the story unfortunately. Probably a good book for some, but not for me.
True to its name, this book was an absolute blast! As someone who loves genre mashups, I found this one to be spot on. It’s a charming romcom with a magical twist and a thrilling quest. It’s not just about romance and humor; it also dives into heartfelt moments, features a great mix of main and side characters, includes a lovable pet, and offers plenty of witty dialogue.
The world-building was impressive, introducing a parallel universe with its own versions of ride-shares, “brew” (coffee) shops, texting, and TV shows. Starting a decade after the group's first adventure, the characters are clearly not at their best. Although the middle portion of the book felt a bit slow, once the story picked up speed, it turned into a gripping read with an ending that left me genuinely touched.
This is just a fun book. Thats what you should go into this expecting. Its full of satire and has a cozy vibe, but it doesn’t have anything solid to really just hold your attention.
I love satire & cozy fantasy -- I do not like a magical "uber" company that transports you in a carriage. Took me right out of the scene immediately and I could not go back.
This was funny and heartwarming all in one. Full of adventure and friendship, I had such a fun time with this. The banter and wit was excellent, and the situations our characters got into were nothing short of fantastical.
I really loved this read! I went in with not too many expectations, and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It felt cozy and fun, and full of adventure. I enjoyed how the book set the scene ten years ahead of the full story, I think that added a lot to the book and made the reading experience feel really well rounded. I think the plot in this worked incredibly well, very character driven, with a magic system that made sense and a wonderful sense of whimsy throughout.
I loved the characters in this, they all felt incredibly well rounded and very distinct in their voices. The romances also all felt like they added to the plot and didn't do anything to detract from the importance of the missions and the characters and their growth throughout. I loved seeing the characters learn and grow more into themselves throughout the course of this, and think that was one of my favourite parts.
The writing within felt very cohesive, I had no clue until I searched the author on instagram about halfway through that it was written by three authors. Everything just worked so well together, I really enjoyed the tone of the story and how humorous it was. I also really enjoyed the ending of this, though the thing that happened does niggle at the back of my mind a bit. Overall, I think this was a wonderful read, it felt like the Dungeons and Dragons movie at times which I really loved, and reminded me at times of rounds of the game that I've played. I cannot wait for more people to read this, it was so much fun!
Okay, this was mostly a fun read. Definitely more of a cozy fantasy because all the villains are defeated quite easily even when they have awesome magic like creating magical weapons, or even rewriting reality to whatever they want it to be. Due to the sacrifice of Galwell, it was all undone and the other three go their separate ways until the 10 year anniversary and the wedding of the Queen. Cue the drama of the three getting back together and seeing how long it takes for Beatrice and Clare or Elowen and Vandra to get together again. That is what is most dwelled on in this story, not the new quest to save the bridegroom of the queen or even the reappearance of old enemies. I will say this pretty much follows the rules of a soap opera. Or in this case, the shadow plays that are in that world. The modern conveniences that had a magic twist kind of were wierd and sometimes through me out of the story though the Wagons U Hire were kind of funny. The ending was odd, with a magic power coming out that solved everything. Kind of disappointing for that to come into play.
So, mostly fun with a few issues and don't expect really good flowing or exciting adventures. Just fun.
Thank you to Avon and Harper Voyager | Avon and NetGalley for an electronic advanced readers copy of this novel.
Part Romance, part fantasy, part friends on a quest, This Will be Fun is about a group of heroes who were torn apart years ago due to the tragic death of their leader, Galwell, after saving their land. Elowin, Galwell's sister, retreats to a dark forest where she spends her time in isolation. Beatrice, Elowin's childhood friend, ends up marrying for stability and not for love. Newly divorced, she runs into the third member of the group, Clare, who is not over his love for Beatrice. All are summoned to the capital for the wedding of Queen Thessia, the Queen of Myrthia, and the ex-love of the late Galwell.
This Will Be Fun is an unique book, blending fantasy, quests, second chance romance and found family into an entertaining book. It was a little long at times, but I enjoyed it overall. The book jumps through different point of views. It's not very deep, but the characters are fun.
I am not entirely sure if this book was meant as satire for the fantasy trope or not. It often seemed too serious to be satire, yet often it seemed to make fun of itself.
In this story a band of unlikely heroes form to save the future king of Mythria. The problem? They mostly hate each other after the quest they were on 10 years prior ended with the death of their beloved leader. Full of quippy remarks and not so subtle jabs at one another the group find themselves traipsing across the country in similar situations as before.
There are two couples that go form during the trip the first, Beatrice and Clare were rumored to be an item ten years ago(insert Claretrice?), too bad Beatrice hates his guts and Clare is full of unrequited lovey angst. The other is Elowen and Vandra. These two were enemies yet lovers before and now that Vandra has switched to Mythria’s side it should be all rainbows for these two, but our little Elowen has trust issues with her heart and an intense fear of losing loved ones.
When they discover old enemies are behind the kidnapping the group double their efforts to save Sir Hugh in time for his wedding to Queen Thessia. Their travels take them to wonderous crystal caves and a sparkling city of vice where the final show down takes place. It also takes them from enemies to friends to lovers.
This story is every cliche in fantasy with cis and lgbtq representation, But it is all that in a delightful package that doesn’t drag you down, you know plus a zombie so there’s that. In the end, of course its the happiest of endings you can imagine. Even if the final battle seemed a little lack luster it is true to the story.
Whether this was meant as satire or not I find This Will Be Fun was witty and charming in the vein of Men in Tights or The Princess Bride. So if you enjoyed those classic films or stories than chances are you’ll enjoy this story too. I happened to love them so this book was a great read for me. I give This Will Be Fun a 3.75 stars out of 5.
