Even though my backpacking days are somewhat behind me, I enjoyed finding so many interesting (and even tasty) ideas for food to take on a camping or a road trip. Due to several food intolerances and allergies, it's not always easy to find something to go or easy to cook on a camping stove.
The recipes are easy to follow and I liked everything that I tried.

A very different collection of recipes. If you are always on the go and looking for simple snacks and fast dinners than this might be interesting to you.

My favorite sections were the Packable Snackables and the Pre-Prepped Meals. While camping, I've done the whole range, from fancy foil-wrapped entrees, to simply throwing hot dogs on the camp grill, but I'm always looking for new ideas. Snacks for hiking, or for little ones, or grabbing a quick bite is fantastic, and meals that have the prep done are winners (especially now that we have 3 and 5 year olds). The sections that I kind of skimmed over: trail mix, the cocktails, and the dehydrated chapter. The cocktails sound fun in theory, but realistically is not for me while camping. The dehydrator is something that I would convince myself I'd use, and maybe go as far as purchasing one, but if I'm honest with myself I would not get around to. Overall a nice book to get some new ideas before a camping trip, but you'd have to find the right chapter for you :)

This is a lovely cookbook with lots of inspiring recipes. Perfect for both campers and backpackers. I particularly liked the packable snacks for when we are out walking. This is a book that will be dipped into many times in the future.

Emily Vikre has written several camp cookbooks, and New Camp Cookbook On the Trail: Easy-to-Pack Meals, Cocktails, and Snacks for Your Next Adventure
has recently been released. It includes meals to make while on the trail- hiking, backpacking, etc., and allows outdoorsy people who like to eat well to have good, fun meals without a lot of prep.

The recipes are written in the traditional manner with comments, a list of ingredients, and step-by-step instructions. They are easy to follow. The recipes call for easy to find ingredients, so there is no need to go to special stores to pick them up. The recipes are quite appealing, and are rustic and go well with the outdoors.

One helpful thing that is included is recipes for spice blends, as well as mixes that make it possible to just add a few ingredients to prepare the dishes, since most of the prep is already done.

I have several books by Vikre (they are excellent), and they all contain healthy-ish, outdoorsy recipes – crunchy granola, if you will – to keep up the energy while outdoors, but she also adds at least a full chapter on cocktails and other alcoholic drinks. This makes me laugh; who cares if you’re eating healthy if you’re drunk? The twelve steps might be in order here.
Vikre always includes beautiful, professional photographs, which make her books very nice. This one is no exception. Anyone who does a lot of camping, hiking, or spends a lot of time outdoors will want to pick up a copy of this fun cookbook.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

Handy to have.

As a hiker, I enjoyed new ideas for energy boosting snacks you can take or make with you on a hike. I liked the vegetarian shepherd's pie. Most of these recipes made perfect sense to me, except, no mixed cocktails on a hike or trail. No. Just no. Not for me.
Aside from that, its a recommend.

I’m not what one would accuse of being outdoorsy but I do like having options. This cookbook was eye opening at the possibilities! Very flavorful and not boring recipes!!!

I always enjoy a good cookbook especially ones with easy recipes to make while camping. This book has some really nice and delicious looking ideas that I can't wait to try out. However, as with a lot of cookbooks, most recipes seem quite u prectical if I think about my reality while camping and have too many ingredients. The instructions mentioned of how to prepare parts of the meals before going out for the camping trip are very helpful but are no real solutions for multiple day hikes or camping adventures.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

New Camp Cookbook: On the Trail is a great, creative cookbook/recipe book for people who love to hike. Much of the book is based on using dehydrated ingredients for convenience and to make carting the ingredients around in a backpack easier. The recipes include photographs that do look quite appetising of the finished meals, and each recipe has full clear instructions. I imagine lots of these recipes will taste amazing after a day of hiking out in the open, and the book even includes drinks recipes, too.

This is a great cookbook for backwoods campers/backpackers! The recipes are fairly simple (which is good, since it's unrealistic to pack and carry a lot of different ingredients). It's full of recipes you would expect: trail mix, granola, pasta, and dehydrated foods. It's not a perfect fit for me, as I usually camp with access to a vehicle/more room, so the recipes weren't as inspiring as I was hoping. I do feel more informed about foods I can bring while backpacking, however! The book is visually very beautiful as well!

I’m generally obsessed with camping cookbooks and this one is a good addition to my collection. I liked that there was a good variety of meal types and generally all the ingredients would be easy to find (except tuna in a pouch! Never see that where I am)

The book has a fair number of cocktail recipes as well which would offer some interesting options for those willing to carry a big extra weight.

Definitely found a few things that will become regular staples on our trips and lots of things to add variety.

As anyone who follows me on the socials knows, I like to hike and we go on a few multi-day hikes each year. Last time we were out on the trail we met some very experiences hikers who gave us some tips about lunches, and had a much yummier time on our most recent hike. We still use "just add boiling water and wait ten minutes" dinners - it's just easier, if not better, so I was interested to read this book. Emily certainly understands about hike in (car free) camping and what is practical to take with you. This beautifully presented and photographed book contains a lot of inspiration and a great deal of it it is practical as well. Things like different types of trail mix and alternative lunches. Some of it is a bit odd - when I'm carrying everything I need on my back, I'm not bringing cocktails -although we have been known to carry whiskey with us, but that's more efficient than long drinks. This is a very pretty book, with lovely photos and chatty helpful commentary. This book hasn't yet motivated me away from my basic approach to camp-food, but it has given me some food for thought.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, for the e-Arc in exchange for an honest review

This is a very beautiful book and I hope it will inspire people to hike AND to eat well. I like a lot of the ideas in the book, especially the use of spices and salt, and the bulking up of soups. The last one is normally easy, unlike a lot of the other recipes. As it says on the cover, it's easy-to-pack meals, and unfortunately not always easy-to-prepare meals.
One thing that's not correct is the Norwegian "matpakke", as they do not put slices of bread face-to-face, they use "mellomleggspapir", a small sheet of paper to separate toppings from the next slice.

What a fun and creative cookbook. So unexpected. I really enjoyed this book. For those of you who love to hike, camp and travel the back roads this cookbook is perfect for you. These recipes are created for easy travel and quick fix. Get creative and feel like the perfect comfort on your hike. This includes everything from pre-prepped meals, easy to assemble and even some special beverages. Each recipe is easy to follow and understand, complete list of ingredients and great description of what to expect. I love the mouth watering photographs throughout the book. I of course found some favorites like Instant Irish Coffee, Fried Wrap A La Norwegians, and Spiked Hot Chocolate. I find more every time I read it. Your family will love this cookbook. It includes guides for dehydrating, making jerky and more. We can’t wait to try them on our next trip.

Don't read this book hungry. Ok, you'll be hungry after reading this book, so be prepared. These recipes and tips are geared toward camping and backpacking, however, all of them can be made in the comfort your home with a few modifications. While nothing in this book is earth-shatteringly new to the camping and backpacking crowd, the information is well laid and clear instructions for anyone to follow.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a fun read and had some great recipes with photos included. I look forward to trying several recipes.

This book is incredible! It had easy recipes that I can easily see myself making, and I plan to make them on my next backpacking trip.

Nay - don't bother.

If you need to purchase a book for recipes to make powdered Arnie Palmers, just water pancakes and flask cocktails so that you can go camping, my honest advice would be that you need to stay home. The great outdoors will chew you up and probably wouldn't spit you back.

I felt this point was reinforced by the editors thinking the readers would be to dumb to grasp some cultural learning about lefse so they just jumped to using tortillas after the author tells you how Norwegian she is.

I received an ARC from Netgalley to help me prepare my honest review.

I’m going camping and I’m always excited to find new easy recipes to cook while camping. This book wasn’t my favorite since some of the recipes aren’t of my taste and the drink recipes are useless for me (I don’t drink) but here are some of the recipes that I would try: trail mix, just add water pancakes, minestrone soup, the sandwich and wrap, Cacio e Pepe, dehydrated fruits and veggies. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review

This is not your typical camping cookbook. It is not filled with new takes on your typical camping fare. It is not meant for people looking for the same old meals with a slightly different take on them. (No honey lemon pepper turkey jerky will be found within these pages.) However, it does offer delicious sounding flavor combinations. (The cherry pecan granola and the curried tuna wrap looked especially nice.)

What I found most surprising was the entire section on flask cocktails. A flask old fashioned, an apple Negroni, and a flask manhattan are among the collection of cocktails to enjoy along your journey. I have to say that definitely seems to add a certain level of sophistication to the journey that I was not expecting. This is quite possibly a menu I may have to prepare for a long day of yard work to pamper myself and make the day seem a lot less like a chore.

I have to thank NetGalley and Emily Virke for the chance to consider this book for review. It was delightful and the photographs were exquisite. I highly recommend this to foodies and outdoorsmen alike.
