Not being much of a camper myself but loving being able to cook outdoors I couldn't wait to check this book out. Glad I did as it has some great recipes for cooking outdoors whether you are camping or at home. There are meals that can be prepared in advance, snacks, things you can throw together and even ideas and information on dehydrating and things that are easy and light to carry in backpacks, etc.
It is easy to read and follow, the recipes easy to use and the ideas are wonderful for anyone one from beginner to experienced cook and camper. A fun way to make camp meals and hiking snacks much more fun.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Excellent book for any hiker or camper who wants to broad their outdoor cooking horizons. I even loved all those little personal stories and anecdotes the author put before the recipes, although most of the time I find those extremely grating. The recipes themselves are easy enough for a novice outdoor cook to replicate, and the ingredients aren't too hard to find. Overall the only part I'd say is would be nice to have is another chapter that would be not just about what to cook, but also how. Because if you have a recipe and ingredients but no idea how to use a portable stove or how to cook food over a campfire the recipe itself won't be hugely helpful.

As someone who hikes with a toddler and has a husband into bike camping, I appreciate the focus on minimal weight without sacrificing flavor. The layout and photos are excellent, and the recipes are both thoughtful and easy to follow. We've discovered many new ideas that have enhanced our outdoor meals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who spends time on the trail."

The "New Camp Cookbook On the Trail" by Emily Vikre is a great guide to having better food and drinks while backpacking. From making your own granola bars to exploring dehydrated foods, this guide is complete with beautiful photographs and straightforward recipes. Note that these recipes are geared towards the trail and backpackers rather than car camping. Thanks to Netgalley for the eARC.
My family and I love to go camping in the summer. We have a trailer that we try to use as much as possible. I am always looking for new quick and easy meal ideas for our trips. This darling cookbook is packed full of just that! I love the "Packable Snackable" and "Just Add" chapters. What a great resource to have in your trailer while you're out enjoying nature in your home away from home!
Let's hit the trail with this trusty guide for packing yummy meals, snacks, and even cocktails! I wish I'd had this fun creative guide before moving to Colorado, so our hikes and camping in the glorious mountains would have been much more delicious. There are 50+ recipes for different types of trail mix, flask cocktails, easy to fix wraps, and desserts such as wild berry crumble, with pretty color photos and much much more. Recommended!
This was a fun cookbook to look through. I enjoyed the inclusion of lots of photos of the different foods being made. My favorite section was the “easy to assemble” section. Like the name implies the recipes were easy to assemble and look yummy. Easy to follow recipes are my favorite during camping. This was an interesting cookbook that I hope to use recipes out of next time I go camping or backpacking!
This is a nice camping cookbook, though it wasn’t a great fit for me. There are lots of cocktail recipes, which makes sense because the author has also written a camping cocktail book. She mentions foraging but doesn’t include any recipes that use foraged ingredients. The recipes are generally dehydrated things you can assemble, lightweight to carry in a backpack. We camp a lot but we tent camp and drive to the site with a cooler or two, so we can use more fresh ingredients like potatoes, corn on the cob, fish, beans, fresh fruit and so on. Her recipes that involve things like eggs and beans use dehydrated versions, which I am just not interested in. She also uses things like packets of lemon juice where I would just bring a lemon. I did like her instant falafel recipe, but I don’t think there were any other recipes that particularly inspired me. There are photos for just about every recipe, which is always a plus. There is no nutritional information and the recipes are somewhat carb heavy though they do sometimes work in nuts, dehydrated beans and pouches of salmon or tuna.
I read a temporary digital version of this book for review.
3.5 stars rounded up. Hits shelves on July 1st! I’ve only been camping a few times in my life. This cookbook didn’t have too much of your classic camping favorites, which is a good thing because if you’re buying this, you’re not looking to be told about recipes you already know! There’s so many out of the box recipes featured in this niche cookbook.
There’s a good amount of trail mixes referenced which would personally be so devastating to eat while vacationing. That’s just a personal preference though. If you’re looking for unique trail mixes, a camping cliche, there really unique combos here that even I, a certified trail mix hater, would like to try! They had me at edamame.
The premixed cocktails are so genius! Not that camping and cocktails have to go together, but if that’s your vibe this book had some tasty sounding, intricate recipes.
The dinners didn’t really appeal to me, there’s a few I would maybe consider — like fried rice. I could see these dinners being appealing to someone who goes camping more often and is sick of the classic pizza, hotdog, and Mac n cheeses. The breakfasts were all very cool! There’s something for everyone in this cookbook and I think it would make a cool gift for someone in your life who regularly camps. It’s a cute decorative bookshelf piece too.
