A sweet romance set in Alaska. It was a fairly quick read, but that didn't take away from the story. Sometimes you just need a quick read.
Love inspired wins again. This was another delightful book about a wonderful family. I enjoyed reading every minute of it and look forward to sharing it with others.
Rating: 4 stars ~ Genre: Christian Romance ~ Pages 208 ~ Publish Date: 23 Jul 2024
The dedication is to those of us “who have endured the cruelty of a mean person”. The kind of mean that stays with you and is intended to do just that. The mean can be words or actions that hurt to our very core. That years later still whisper it in our ear. Author Heidi McCahan reminds us we are stronger than we know. We all have the slings of barbs and arrows. And we can’t always avoid the people who use them. Her Alaskan Family is about that. There are no horrible scenes with yelling and screaming. Just a woman who figures out how to live with those whose words and actions hurt, even in a small way.
I had a bully in high school. We had no classes together but we rode the same bus every day. I only felt safe if I sat right behind the bus driver. It gave him great satisfaction to know I was scared of him. His bullying was with words, but I was scared actions would follow if he got the chance.
And what voice does Savannah hear less than 20 minutes after returning to her Alaskan hometown of Opportunity? The person who bullied her throughout her childhood. And in a round-about-way announces that Savannah was fired from her teaching job and that’s why she is back in Alaska.
She also runs into her high school crush, Jasper Carter, his brother Levi, and a little girl named Wren. Wren is a foster child in Levi’s care. No wife. There should have been a wife, but she dropped him and … Nope. Can’t tell you more. It’s important when you read Her Alaskan Family, you learn what makes up the Carter family and how Savannah fits in.
Little Wren is bright but so unhappy. She doesn’t know where she belongs. She doesn’t trust because no one has been that trustworthy. Levi is doing his best but feels like he is dropping the ball. Savannah knows what it feels like. And Wren eventually nicknames her “Savvy”.
Savannah plans to interview for the art teacher position at the high school, a job that has not been posted yet. So how did someone apply already? Before the job is posted. Will she even be considered?
This clean, Christian story is an easy read, the first of a new series “Opportunity, Alaska”. I think you will enjoy the scenes with Wren the most. I liked this book. A lot. But will I want to re-read it again? I don’t think so.
I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of Her Alaskan Family via NetGalley from the publisher, Harlequin – Romance | Love Inspired Suspense. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

What a read! I absolutely enjoyed this read about found family and learning to trust and love.
What happens when you lose your job? You of course have to return back home and deal with your former classmates questioning why you back. That's what happened to Savannah and to make it worse she has a reunion coming up . But much to her joy she reaches an arrangement with Levi Carter the one brother she never cared for. Loved how the book tackled failure fostering ,parenting ,siblings and the "mean girl aspect".
Rating :3.5
The synopsis promises "uplifting" and delivered in many ways. The two main characters put aside their own problems to help this little girl find her place in a family. Heidi McCahan spent the time and effort to make the Alaskan community true to life and develop the characters into people readers could care about. An emotional and entertaining story that sends the series off to a good atsrt.
A sweet read that will break your heart at times. It deals with changing life circumstances and how you deal with it. Going back home after having left and really starting over. Starting over and fake relationships might not be the way, but Jake and Savannah try to do this.
A clean read that will have you wanting to read it in one setting.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the Publisher and leaving a review by my own choice.
Savannah returns to Opportunity, Alaska, after losing her job and relationship, arriving in time for her 10-year reunion where she finds her childhood crush is newly engaged. Seeking a fresh start, she encounters his twin brother, Levi, who is struggling to care for his foster child, Wren, after a broken engagement. Levi hires Savannah as Wren's babysitter and fake girlfriend for reunion events. Though the arrangement benefits both, it’s temporary and complicated by Savannah's secret that could ruin everything. The novel explores awkward moments between Savannah and Levi as their feelings deepen, and their efforts to support Wren through her struggles reveal their compassionate natures. This engrossing story, read in one day, combines fake dating with heartfelt challenges and growth.
I loved Her Alaskan Family. It was definitely a fast paced story, but being a Love Inspired book, that is to be expected! I loved getting to know Savannah & Levi. Their Reunion story, as well as Levi's of being a foster parent, were so sweet. I was excited to see that Heidi McCahan would have a novel coming out in 2025.
Her Alaskan Family by Heidi McCahan
Book 1 of 1: Opportunity, Alaska
One lost little girl…
Could be the key to a permanent family
Recently fired, Savannah Morgan dreads attending her ten-year high school reunion as a failure. But for Levi Carter, Savannah’s return home might solve all his troubles. The newly single dad needs reliable childcare for his temporary foster daughter—and a fake girlfriend at the reunion to deflect any pitying glances after his recent breakup. But as the line between real and pretend begins to blur, will a secret Savannah is keeping ruin their chance at a permanent commitment?
This is Savannah Morgan, Levi Carter and foster daughter Wren 's story.
How had she ended up here?
Savannah Morgan sighed as the familiar green forest of spruce trees flew by the truck’s window. Moving home to Opportunity, Alaska, had never been on her radar, much less returning at twenty-eight, unemployed and desperate for even her old bedroom. She’d planned out her entire life with one objective—to never move back to this small town, where everyone was always wrapped up in each other’s business. Until a spring break trip had morphed into a nightmare and left her without a job.
She likely wouldn’t find gold or silver here, but her parents had both mentioned that the art teacher had unexpectedly retired. His position hadn’t been filled. She fully intended to apply.
“Wren, this is my friend, Miss Morgan.” Levi took Wren’s sticky hand in his and led the way down the aisle with the lanterns, flashlights, headlamps and other camping accessories.
“Levi, she doesn’t have to call me—”
Levi glanced over his shoulder and gave Savannah a work with me on this look. He didn’t know much about being a foster parent. But since Wren had arrived at his house as an emergency placement, he’d learned quickly that consistency was key.
Savannah chuckled. “Sure am. Do you go to school, Wren?”
I recommend this book.
Her Alaskan Family by Heidi McCahan is a 5 star book.
I am looking forward to reading more books by Heidi McCahan .
I received a complimentary copy of the book and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions are my own.
What a sweet redemptive romance. I loved being part of the drama in this story. From the twins, Levi and Jasper, who were working in the family business, to the know it all school mate, Candace, who made life miserable for everyone in her path and to the main character Savannah (Savvy) who had to overcome the issue of a tragedy almost ruining her career. I loved the peaceful setting of Alaska.
Thank you to Heidi McCahan, NetGalley and Love Inspired/Harlequin for allowing me this arc version. All opinions stated above are my own.
This is a sweet, clean Christian romance that transports the readers to Opportunity, Alaska.
Savannah/Savvy Morgan left her hometown
and was an art teacher in Colorado when the unthinkable happened. She lost her job, her boyfriend and her self esteem. She’s back home unsure what her future holds though she hopes to apply for the art teacher opening in her alma mater. Meanwhile, she’s also dreading the HS reunion. Especially because the woman in charge was her HS nemesis.
Savvy is also wondering if she’ll be seeing her HS crush, Jasper Carter.
Levi Carter, Jasper’s twin, is busy not only working with his father at the family store, but also with the 4 year old girl he is fostering. A child whose short life has been filled with hurt and trauma. To create more stress in his life, he’s not looking forward to the HSreunion because of his break up. When Savvy arrives in town, they decide to fake a relationship and go together. Of course, from that point on, nothing goes as they had expected.
The plot was engaging. Especially, as we spend time with these two. Their insecurities, trust issues, fake relation, and secretly developing feelings, keep the readers interest from beginning to the end.
It was also a touching story about fostering a child , especially one that has been traumatized in her short life.
Looking forward to more stories in this new series. Will one of Savvy’s sister be next?
I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley and Love Inspired/Harlequin. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I read an advanced reader’s copy of this novel thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and the author Heidi McCahan. This is he first novel in the Alaskan Opportunity series. This novel was such a cute and inspiring read. I connected with several of the characters and adored the little girl in this novel. I felt that the chemistry and passion between the FMC and MMC was so sweet. I highly recommend this read when it releases on July 23, 2024.
This is a Small Town Romance, and this is the first book in the Opportunity Alaska series. I loved getting to know all the characters in this book. I was pulled into the story, and I really loved the little girl in this book. This was a great read and it was so much fun to read. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
A sweet romance. The foster child adds heart and humor. Nice story with a variety of characters. Most are likeable. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
I enjoyed this book, not as much as other Heidi McCahan books I have read though. I loved the Alaskan setting, the story line of still dealing with high school and small town annoyances when Savannah moved back home, and the mention of prayer throughout the book. Good quick read with a positive message. Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
This book is everything I love about Love Inspired books. This book is based in Alaska and has the "fake romance" trope along with an adorable but troubled foster daughter in the mix. There are a ton of different family dynamics and a high school reunion filled with all the drama you'd expect from a reunion. Mix in some white water rafting, a baseball game, parade float competition and a woman who needs to find a job and you have a whole lot of storyline packed into a quick read.
I loved the romance aspect, Christian faith storyline, two people coming together to help a 4 year old girl in foster care that has seen too much and setting in Alaska. It's realistic with some bumps along the way to the happily ever after. If you like sweet, Christian romances this one is for you.
Thank you to Harlequin Romance and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and ARC of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Her Alaskan Family is a well written inspirational romance. I enjoyed the plot, characters and the Alaskan setting. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and N. This is my unbiased review.
Okay, this is TEN stars, I know it's not a thing but shoot if it shouldn't be. The fake relationship, single dad, sweet foster child, secrets, and shoot the "fake kisses." This story had me literally IN TEARS. Heidi has written an amazing story, I can not wait for it to hit shelves!
Savannah moves back to Opportunity, Alaska after a horrible incident resulting in her losing her job, and relationship. She arrives just in time for her 10-year reunion, and to find out her childhood crush is newly engaged! At the same time that she is fleeing from her past, in hopes at getting a fresh start she runs in to her crush's twin brother, Levi. Levi is fresh from a broken engagement and now is the emergency placement for an adorable foster child Wren. But he is out of his league, and can not manage work, and his temporary foster daughter. Add in a reunion and running into his exfiancee for all the events and Levi comes up with the brilliant idea of hiring Savannah. Not just for Wren's babysitter, and to help with his company's float in the upcoming parade... but most importantly, his fake girlfriend for all the reunion festivities. Sounds like a good exchange! Savannah gets a good paying job, she is back working with children, she can use her art degree for the float, and she can appear to have a blossoming relationship. Except... the jobs are temporary, and the relationship is fake. And worst of all Savannah has a secret that if anyone founds out everything she has, temporary or not...will be stripped away! And let me just remind you that every school has a "mean girl", so what happens when the mean girl catches wind of Savannah's secret?!!!
