The Sky Was Always Underground is a lyrical hybrid book about the aftermath of the 1940 mine disaster in Ohio, it was the second most deadly and still it has left a scar on Ohio’s history. This book is the same, each poem leaves an everlasting scar on each reader who experiences the stories and truths the author portrays, even after you’ve finished the book the voices still linger far longer.
I rarely enjoy reading poetry books, I find them droll and difficult, however, this poetry anthology was gripping. Each poem was a different experience, and beautifully written, each one is a masterpiece. The pieces in the book are all vastly different from one another, and while they are all about the same town and the same disaster. Each one is written using various techniques giving them distinct voices which I liked. The book has a unique way of conveying facts to the reader and helps engage us. It feels like a new way of providing non-fiction but in a fun way.
I highly recommend this poetry book to anyone interested in learning about history in a new way.
