Fantagraphics has the good sense to pick up You and a Bike and a Road, originally published by the now-closed Koyama Press. You and a Bike and a Road is a perfect combination of storytelling and form that just feels special when you read it. Being drawn in pencil and pen, this book is a collection of (mostly) daily drawings that chronicle the author's cycling journey from Arizona to her home in Georgia. Half mental journey and half physical, Eleanor talks about the freeing feeling of solo traveling, mental and physical illness, the kindness of strangers, dick-shaped gas station foods, and the changing physical and political landscapes she travels. Reflective of the challenges of drawing on the road, the art style consists of minimalistic, sketchy "bad drawings" that only someone who really knows how to draw can accomplish.
Thanks to NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
:You & a Bike & a Road: by Eleanor Davis is for readers who crave adventure, kindness, and self-discovery. The graphic novel memoir chronicles the author's inspiring cross-country bike tour. It weaves together stories of human connection, resilience, travel.
I found the book really moving and special and would recommend it to anyone who loves bicycling or has gone on a bike trip, or a solo-trip.
You and a Bike and a Road. This is a comic book travelogue that tells a big story by way of humorous doodles and drawings. The authors mind explodes onto the page with a variety of on the go drawings. You really get a feel for her journey and all her hopes and fears on the way. It is surprising how much of a story can be told by way of pictures and captions only. A great idea and book that I really enjoyed.
