This is the second book in the series and was still an immediate must-read when looking at the description. This book gives off a Buffy/Vampire Diaries vibe, but on fast-forward. 'Second Chance' was one book, but it could have been three seasons of something based on the amount that was packed into it. That being said, it did make for a fast and interesting read, although I did miss the nuances of story and world-building.
I’ll start by saying that I am not part of the “Vampire Shdowers” group as I have not read the first book. However, I decided to give it a try.
The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I enjoyed the (let’s say) powers - I’m trying not to spoil!
I didn’t enjoy the love triangle and the fact that the romance scenes were kind of tame. That’s just a personal preference!
Overall, I was a bit confused but I think that I will try to dive deeper into Kinsley’s story so that I am more accustomed to the characters.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
Kinsley Preston thinks she is a normal college student until her parents are murdered and she finds that she is a shadower, a type of vampire slayer, with special blood that increases vampire powers. There’s a war between basically good vampires and evil ones, and the evil ones have been murdered, like Kinsley’s parents until she is one of the few left. Kyona Jiles’s tale of Kinsley’s face off with one of the truly evil vampires, her training, and her First Death(self published ebook). Then her Aunt is kidnapped and Kinsley needs a Second Chance (book) to learn how to work with the vampire Beckford Alexander, a group of human monster killers, other shape-shifters and the succubus Lilith to finally face the evil Isaac. This is a nice opening to a fun urban fantasy that is growing on me.
Holy Heck! Second Chance by Kyona Jiles is everything it's predecessor was, and more! This book hooks the reader at the very beginning and won't let go until the very last page. You feel as if you're right back with some old friends, and are disappointed to see them leave when you have to put the book down, even for a couple of minutes. Waiting for book three is definitely going to be a test of patience for anyone that has read the first two books. Ms. Jiles has a way of writing that ensares her readers, bringing them back over and over. If readers are unfamiliar with her work, by the time they read First Bite and Second Chance, they will be scouring anything they can find for more books by this author!
Second Chance is the 2nd book in the Vampire Shadower series, which I completely overlooked when I requested this. However, I felt like I was able to catch on to what was going on fairly well.
If you like vampires, shapeshifters, and more, this book (and series) is for you. Best part is that it takes place on the Oregon/Washington coast.
There was a lot of action in this book that kept it moving quickly, and it certainly leaves room for a book 3!
Thank you to NetGalley and bookfunnel for this ARC in return for my honest review.

Second Chance by Kyona Jiles is a paranormal vampire romance novel. It is book 2 in the Vampire Shadower Series. Of course it’s always best to read book 1 but if you have not Kyona Jiles does a great job giving the back story. The world building and descriptions are great as we delve into the world of Kinsley and Beckford. I really enjoyed the plot as well as it included the two main characters and many others. There is a love triangle going on through out the book that keeps you guessing how will this be resolved OR will it?
Overall I really enjoyed this book. Kyona Jiles did an excellent job with the paranormal genre and bringing the characters to life. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Book #2 in in this cross genre series that continues to build on the excellent first book, FIRST DEATH, where Kyona Jiles introduced us to a whole new paranormal world with a full cast of characters to follow. MC Kinsey Preston is expanding the skills of a Vampire Shadower as she navigates personal interactions that leave her with more questions than answers. SECOND CHANCE finds her on a quest to save her aunt from a vampire with the help and hindrance of a community of mixed races from every corner of paranormal fiction. Jiles does a credible job of keeping track of the many character quirks that I'm sure we'll see featured in future series installments. This second book has developed on the basis outline set in the first book. It's going to be very interesting to see where Jiles takes them next.
Huge thank you to BW Red and NetGalley for letting me read an early copy of this book.
This was a new venture for me. I do love the paranormal and supernatural and this series is turning out to be a great addition to my addiction. It’s not a straightforward read by any means. It’s twisty and complicated and very addictive. I’m also not a huge love triangle girly but this one is working! Definitely needing more Kinsley.
Thanks to BW Red, NetGalley, and Kyona Jules for the amazing adventure that was involved in reading this second book of the Vampire Shadower series. I am blown away by this book and really looking forward to reading the next adventure for our group of supernatural beings. Kinsley Preston and Beckford Alexander literally burn the pages up!! Wow! Love that we found out back story on main characters so that even if you haven’t read book one you can dive in and be in on the action and know what to expect.
Just one little hint who doesn’t love a town named Ecstasy where you can expect succubi to be hanging out? Brilliant stuff!😊Love that and just couldn’t wait to share it with you all ❤️run don’t walk to grab this book it is fantastic and so much fun!!!
ust so you know, I didn’t realize this was the second book in a series. I usually pay attention to this kind of information, but this time it wasn’t mentioned on the cover. Although it was stated in the book’s description, I overlooked it. Don’t worry, that didn’t stop me from enjoying the story. There were moments when I got confused, but I take full ownership of that. Trust me, read the stories in order for maximum enjoyment.
“Second Chance” by Kyona Jiles is a gripping new adult paranormal romance with supernatural creatures and a love triangle. If you love spice in your romance, this is the fade to black kind of book.
What I Loved
I loved the interactions among the side characters and I think this was one of the book’s strongest points. Their relationships and personalities added depth and vibrancy to the story, making the supernatural world feel more grounded and relatable. Each character brought something unique to the table, enhancing the overall reading experience.
The story’s love triangle was both gripping and masterfully executed. The main love interest was particularly well-developed, and the romantic tension added an extra layer of excitement. This part had me hooked, dying to see how things would play out.
The supernatural world is easy to grasp and doesn’t need much world-building. The book is simple enough for new readers to enjoy and has enough detail to keep paranormal fans satisfied.
The author’s writing style is engaging and fluid, making for an enjoyable read. The development of the main relationship arc was both satisfying and realistic, with enough emotional depth to keep readers invested.
What Didn’t Resonate With Me
As I mentioned earlier, jumping into this book without reading the first in the series led to some confusion. While this is largely a reader error, it’s worth noting for potential readers. To fully appreciate the nuances and background, starting with the first book is essential.
There were these visions that got me curious, but they ended up being a dead end. That was both confusing and disappointing. I can’t say more without giving spoilers.
Conclusion
“Second Chance” by Kyona Jiles is a great addition to the new adult paranormal romance genre. Its engaging characters, romantic tension, and romance make it a worthwhile read, especially for those who appreciate a well-crafted love triangle. However, to avoid confusion and fully enjoy the story, I highly recommend starting with the first book in the series.
If you’re a fan of paranormal romances with rich character interactions and a touch of drama, “Second Chance” is definitely worth adding to your reading list. Just be sure to pick up the series from the beginning for the best experience.
This is the second book in the Vampire Shadowers series, and we see Kinsley begin to come into her powers. This book has a lot of action, tension and excitement. I, however, find that evil does not really have to worry about Kinsley. She is more likely to stumble into a solution than put up a strong front. She acts like a 13 year old, and continually refuses to see beyond the current moment to visualize the consequences of her actions. She also has a temper that causes harm to those around her. She gets explosively mad about the wrong things, and lets big things slide despite a complaint about what a big deal it is. It is not that I did not enjoy the story and the fighting and the magic of her world. But I really don't like her. She makes a poor heroine. There was a love triangle from the start of book one, and that aspect of the story progressed as expected. The final resolution of all that sexual tension was a little over-the-top for me also. I found myself arguing with her as I read, which may sound like a bad thing but it actually kept me engaged. I may continue to read the series, or at least the next book in the series. to see if she grows emotionally as she grows in strength. Again, there is a lot of great action on these pages even if I did find inconsistencies in the story.
Tense page turner for paranormal fans of all kinds! Vamps, shifters, and some different magic floating about - and of course a few romances floating around too. Good vs evil, some resolutions and some new challenges. A fast moving and fun read. (FTB, for the spice fans out there)
I was so excited to start this, and one of the hopes I had for this book was that it wasn’t the last. I am happy to say I’m pretty sure it’s not. There are quite a few characters in this series, and I adore every one of them. Kinsley’s life as a Shadow is interesting, and I hope we get to find out more about her…um, different powers (no spoilers). It’s mentioned a couple of times, but we don’t know exactly what this particular name holds. Add in the big baddie, and this is an action-filled, fun, adventurous book, and I’m sad it’s over but glad there’ll be more because of that ending. Urban fantasy in the way I love. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
“Feelings weren’t meant to be controlled… they were meant to wash over you like drowning ocean waves. To whip in and out of your soul like the hurricane winds. Without feelings, how do you know you’re alive?”
“Second Chance,” by Kyona Jiles
After Kinsley has been struggling with the knowledge of the supernatural, she needs to know go and save her kidnapped aunt from an evil vampire. With her newfound powers that she is trying to get a handle on, and a band of allies can she stop the vampire before her loved ones get hurt?
I really liked the first book of the Vampire Shadower series and this one didn’t disappoint. I love the side characters and how they all interact with each other. I loved the main love interest and the love triangle thing that was happening in this book. The world building in this series isn’t very big so you don’t need a lot of information to understand the basic concept of the supernatural. The only thing I didn’t like was the visions of her with two men and that never went anywhere to happen so it just added drama and gave me false hope about how the characters would end up, but that’s just because I love reverse harems lol. 4 out of 5 stars.
Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.
“Who did I think I was? Xena? Buffy? Wonder Woman?
What in the world made me think I could find
Marie without anyone getting hurt?”
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a pleasant surprise. A paranormal, vampires and hunters and shifters book with a love triangle that, for once in a while, is not boring and frustrating (well, kind of) and with characters that are quite interesting and rejuvenating. I found myself more than a little bit interested in the storyline and the overall plot and I think the author truly made it clear that it was supposed to get confusing and complicated fast. The book is new adult, with a lot of fade to black scenes (I would have liked something more to be honest). But the sweetness of the relationships made it all better. You need to read book one first, to be able to understand what is happening in this one though. Highly recommended!!! And of course, you’ll find yourself falling for the morally grey, complicated but intriguing and secretive vampire who, I have to admit, stole my heart from the very first scene!! As for the tropes in the book… listen I was in love with!!!! It is true that as far as a vampire is involved, things will start getting primal!!! But considering the presence of a love triangle, I had read more about being possessive and not being ready to share, and who did this to you, than I have in a long time!!! And it was all really appreciated !!!! I do wander what to expect from the next one. I can’t wait to find out !!
“I sucked in a breath, heart beating faster, and let myself go for the first time in months. I tried to push everything from my mind except Beck, our connection, and all he had done to keep me safe. I hadn't known it at the time, but he was my safe harbor and the anchor that held me there.”
Kinsley’s new perspective on the greater paranormal world grows in this second installment. While she navigates her place in Beck and Scott’s businesses and personal lives as well as learning more about her and her own family’s past, Kinsley becomes more her own person and owns her destiny. This novel is really an extension of the first novel and sets the stage for a series of books dedicated to rooting out the bad guys. 3 stars.
Review based on a digital Advanced Reader’s Copy provided by The Book Whisperer and NetGalley. Thank you!
Very enjoyable read. Kinsley and her friends have great relationships and the author took a little time developing the characters. It jumps right into the story picking up from book 1. As a reader I would have preferred the two books being a single book. Had I not already had access to this book I would have been upset. The cliffhanger is that random. Like an unfinished sentence. This book continued with all the developments of Kinsley’s personal growth as she learned her powers and the confidence she has as a result. Again her love life (or eventual love life) plays a big role but it is a zero spice when it comes to details. Quite enjoyable level of love and tension without too much graphic. If graphic, mature or erotic is not your scene this is for you. Not chaste though. And we have our happily ever after. It is totally set for a book 3 with requisite cliffhanger but much more reasonable. Part of story is wrapped up and good setup for next book.
wow wow wow the book was exciting from start to finish. If you liked the first book you will love this one. The ending was just as exciting as the first book and makes you look forward to hopefully the next book
The first arc has come to an end, but more than one problem looms for Kin and her friends/colleagues. The series is becoming more enjoyable even if a little repetitive, but I have no idea if and when the next book will come out.
La prima arc é arrivata ad una fine, ma piú di un problema si preannuncia per Kin e i suoi amici/colleghi. La serie è un po' ripetitiva, ma piacevole, peró non ho idea se e quando uscirà il prossimo libro.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
