The Physics of Sorrow is a fragmented, reflective novel blending myth, history, and personal anecdotes. Narrator Georgi tells his life story. I really enjoyed the start of the novel about the Minotaur. Later on, we learn about family history, like his boyhood years in communist Bulgaria, the abandonment of his relatives, and some other family secrets.

This was my second novel by Georgi Gospodinov. My first was Time Shelter. Again, I really enjoyed the start and hoped for a different novel. But I'm used to the author's style, so now I can appreciate his works more.

I also recommend the audio format. I think it's much easier to get through.

Excellent audiobook adaptation, but a disjointed read. I truly enjoyed the little bits of Bulgarianisms but was put off by the Greek mythos and sporatic narrative. I guess I'm just not a fan of nonlinear narrative, and even less a fan when no clear line between reality and fantasy is struck.

Toby Stephens is a fantastic narrator, emulating the highly emotive narrative with a captivating cadence

The author is navigating a labyrinth of life experiences which are grounded in the past, the rebirth of Bulgaria and the trepidation about a new, unknown future. Utterly engrossing and highly relatable, very much recommended

This is a really hard book to read and digest. It wasn't for me and I don't think its for everyone but those who are into that slow decent into madness I can see this really working. The writing style is a but wordy but if that doesn't both you definitely give this one a shot.
