Another great nonfiction book to add to your collection. Great for libraries or the home where the young people want their first pet.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.
cute basic instructions manual on the Hedgehog. I enjoyed the inclusion of a glossary so kids can easily look up the meaning of an word. . I would however do more researching çvf
This book tells all about owning a hedgehog as a pet. Chapters are only a couple of pages each with simple details easy for an elementary age student to understand. Pictures are included, along with important points such as when to contact a veterinarian. The book encourages taking care of your pet correctly, which is a positive aspect. There is a glossary at the back and an index to make it easy to find information. There are additional resources included on the last page.
This book is nicely put together and would make a great addition to a school or classroom library.
Thank you to #NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for honest feedback.

This will be an awesome text to use for persuasive writing. Why someone should get a pet is a great persuasive writing topic and this book is wonderful way for students to gather evidence to plea their case.
This book was really easy to read and highly informative. This adorable series has a ton of information to help you decide if you want a hedgehog as a pet or not. In addition to loving the charming, vibrant pictures, my kids discovered a ton of new information. I appreciate you including me and allowing me to review this advance copy honestly.
I love everything about this series! There are several books giving a brief introduction to odd pets, such as hedgehogs. This is not a comprehensive book, and anyone who decides to go ahead and adopt a hedgehog should learn more first. But young readers can learn the most important practical parts of caring for hedgehogs, like what to feed them and when they need a pet doctor. Even if you don't want a hedgehog pet, you may enjoy this because the pictures are adorable. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
My 17yo daughter has been obsessed with hedgehogs for years. Although she's a bit older than the target demographic for this book, she still learned some new things about what it takes to have a hedgie of your own. It discusses the differences between wild and pet hedgehogs, as well as the needs of pets regarding food, shelter, cleanliness and vet care. A solid guide for kids thinking of acquiring one of their own.
Not a bad book about owning a pet hedgehog. As someone who had two before I developed allergies, I read this book and thought that the author did a pretty good job of capturing some of the important aspects of hedgehog ownership. That being aid, Mallory did leave a lot of gaps and, since this is geared towards younger kids, I think they were pretty significant. For example, the author really should have gotten into more detail around their quills. Hedgehog quills are sharp like sewing needles and can draw blood. They also have an irritant that can cause your skin to hive up. (While I started out fine, by the time my second hedgie was 2, I realized that I was allergic to the irritant.) And they get startled easily, which means they will ball up or defend when you aren't expecting it.
If you are looking at this pet, it would be wise to get one for someone older, and in that case, maybe this book isn't the right fit as it's more directed towards a younger reader. I would not recommend a hedgehog for a family with children or a child. They really are a pet for when you are older.
If you or your child want to own a hedgehog, I would recommend that this be a book you read through; however, I would also encourage getting some more books on these little creatures, because there is a lot more information you need before you enter into this relationship. Hedgehogs are a lot like cats, in that they tend to be very independent and don't really need humans to hang out with them. And because of this. they need to be socialized a lot.. Even then, you can have wide variety in how they interact. I socialized both of my hedgehogs by carrying them around with me - in a hoodie pocket - everywhere for weeks and while one got very social, the other stayed a bit more antisocial for her entire life.
So, this book is a great way to maybe introduce hedgehogs as pets, but definitely do more research. As an aside, I have learned through experience that hedgehogs also develop instant dislikes of some people. My uncle could never come into a room with my two and not have them react to his voice.
I love hedgies and I’d love to have one as a pet one day. So while I may not be the target audience for this well done how-to manual on pet hedgehog ownership I still found the information inside very useful with adorable photos. The graphics and headings are eye-catching, Information is clear and concise. I had no idea it’s illegal to have a pet hedgie in some states. I’d buy this for a child in my life.
Thanks to the author and publisher for the NetGalley e-arc I received in exchange for my honest review.
