The world needs more books like this - thoughtful, fact-based analysis provided by a true expert on the subject. The author knows his stuff - personal experience aside, his familiarity with economics, history, and data evaluation makes him the perfect person to present the information in an accessible and understandable format. As he repeatedly points out, the majority of Americans view immigration as a positive - but one of many positive things they support at a general level. The relatively small number of people opposed to immigration, on the other hand, are loud and passionate single-issue voters, so they produce the majority of public discourse on the subject. This book compiles actual information in the form of publicly available data, peer reviewed studies, and real world case studies that demonstrate the lack of facts to support the anti-immigration position. The narration of the audio edition is perfect - it really hits the tone of friendly, competent voices from educational TV.

No matter what you think you know about immigration, this is worth your time - you'll learn a lot and it will make you think.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

In The Truth About Immigration, Zeke Hernandez, associate professor at University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, explores the link between immigration and economic growth. This is an indispensable, research-based resource for evaluating the history and impact of immigration in the United States. While he doesn't offer developed solutions for the thorniest issues, he does address them (e.g.., the unique financial and infrastructural burdens that states with the highest percentage of early-stage immigrants carry). A timely, accessible book that all Americans, especially those shaping immigration policy, should read.

Immigration is such a hot topic but it's usually presented in over-simplified terms. This book adds a refreshing and necessary nuance to the conversation. The writing is an engaging mix of personal and political, immediate and long term consequences.

I really enjoyed listening to The Truth About Immigration, read by the author. I learned so much about the benefits countries and their existing citizens reap when immigrants enter their country. This book does a great job of addressing and correcting misconceptions about immigrants and immigration, particularly as it impacts America. The author's narration was easy and enjoyable to listen to. I appreciated that the information shared in the book comes from over 20 years of research and that he also interspersed his personal experiences as an immigrant into it.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for a review copy of this audiobook.

I think everyone should read this book! It gives such a different perspective on immigration then what is portrayed in the media. I loved the plethora of sources + studies referenced. This book truly made me want to research the topic more! I think it was palatable + written in a way that is accessible to everyone!

This is a timely and important book that addresses a lot of the misconceptions and misinformation regarding immigration. Hernandez explains his points from the point of view of someone who has a lived experience with immigration but also as someone who is a respected researcher in the field. When explaining his ideas, Hernandez gives the readers challenges so that we can confront our own assumptions about what we think we know.
One of most important points of the book, obviously, is how immigrants can help societies. Instead of reacting with fear, it makes more sense to be rational, especially with something this important. This book could benefit anyone who has questions about immigration and the effects immigration really has on society. The audiobook is a great choice because the narration is clear, direct, and friendly, making the information easily accessible.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this audiobook

THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION
Zeke Hernandez

Reading this felt like watering a swamp bush. But even the ocean needs the rain and Iโ€™m glad I scheduled in time to read THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION.

THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION promises the truth about what happens negatively and positively when people migrate. How it affects the economy and culture of the place migrants migrate to. Trends in business ownership, culture, production, and impact on surrounding areas include employees, owners, and patrons.

THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION talks little about how the immigrant population is affected, how the originating country is affected by migration, and how we who are in support of immigration can help to support the migrant population in our communities near and far.

It touches briefly on how immigration affects politics and voting. I wouldโ€™ve liked a lot more information on voting statistics.

Overall, I wouldโ€™ve liked more specific substantiated statistics. Some of that information is not available. Some of the research is done the way itโ€™s done because those are the most effective ways of collecting, interpreting, and summarizing that information. It may not cover all the aspects and details of what youโ€™re looking for.

THE TRUTH ABOUT IMMIGRATION is a convincing argument for those who believe immigration affects the livelihood of the country they migrate to negatively. It is lacking for those who are in support of immigration. And we need both.

Thanks to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copies!

This is a fantastic book on immigration. The authors ability to weave economic, cultural, and societal questions into one text makes it a great primer on the issues. Regardless of where you land on questions of immigration, Hernandez gives compelling arguments backed by peer-reviewed research to help give clarity to the current situation. Especially in this political year, and especially as we pass 100 years since the 1924 Immigration Act, this is a timely book that everyone should read.
