What a great book on how to make charcuterie boards with lots of drink, theme, and decorating ideas included.
Gathering Boards is a stunning cookbook for creative and delicious gathering boards for loved ones and parties. I absolutely loved it and I highly recommend it. It’s both creative and fun. The boards and beverages are well laid out and beautiful. I don’t drink so I definitely wish there were non alcoholic versions but I’m sure I can find those and add the fruit and flowers. This is really a fantastic cookbook and would make a lovely gift.
If you’ve joined the charcuterie board bandwagon when entertaining, you’ll want to pick up Gathering Boards: Seasonal Cheese and Charcuterie Spreads for Easy and Memorable Entertaining, an excellent book written by Sarah Tuthill, a food and lifestyle journalist who is featured on local Pittsburgh television and teaches classes on boards in the local area.
In this book, Tuthill shows cooks and non-cooks how to make beautiful boards, with step-by-step instructions and tips that will help anyone make a beautiful board presentation. The beginning of the book outlines different cheeses, meats, etc. that go on the boards. The end of the book has pairing suggestions. There are a few recipes included that go well on the boards. Otherwise, Tuthill presents unique ideas for seasonal boards. She includes decorations that go with the boards and expand the theme of the board. There are boards for everyday, such as a baked potato board and taco board, as well as holiday boards. There is a beautiful mouthwatering charcuterie and cheese wreath for the holidays, and a cute “CharBooterie” board for Halloween (clever!). She includes a basket for Mother’s Day (which isn’t actually a board but is similar), and a cute presentation in a fishing tackle box for Father’s Day. This author certainly has an imagination, and that really helps those of us who need the ideas for entertaining.
There are beautiful professional photographs for every board or presentation, and others for supporting décor. She explains what makes a suitable board to start with and the basics. She also adds ideas on how to make the meats and cheeses look fancier by folding or arranging them into roses.
All told, anyone who is interested in making a showstopper board will want to pick up this excellent book. The ideas are doable for anyone and guests will love the variety and artistic presentation.

This was an interesting cookbook and a creative take on charcuterie/meal boards. Not sure how many I would really make, but it was an interesting browse and read through the recipes. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
This is one yummy read. It has so many ideas of different nibble boards, grazing boards, I cannot wait to try them all.

For bigger gatherings I love the idea of charcuterie boards - an easier way to serve your guests. And in Sarah's case, a beautiful way!
I really liked the suggested boards, the different seasons and reasons they reflected and the way she showed how to create the beautiful presentations. I found them quite sophisticated, I would have liked a couple of younger/less elegant suggestions for say family get togethers, but that's a small quibble.
A lovely book.
I don't know much about charcuterie boards, but I found this to be a great source of inspiration.
What I liked most about this book was the seasonal organization of the chapters and the wine pairing suggested for the boards.
This is a guide to creating varied and unique charcuterie boards. From boards to create your own unique baked potato combination to the classic charcuterie board, this has everything you need to know as a base and more.
An in depth look at charcuterie boards with great suggestions and beautiful pictures! If there's only one book you want on charcuterie boards, this is it. It was much more detailed than I expected, impressively so and it has everything you could possibly need to know
I love boards for any time meals! I have several books on making and creating foods for them. I was a bit disappointed in this book as it just didn't show the creation of the boards or it's foods. Recipes and drink pairing were nice addition to the usual fare tho'. It's entertaining to read about her inspirations and events. I wish I could go to her EZPZ shop and actually participate in a boarding class! I think for those with experience creating boards, this book might be a worthwhile purchase, but beginners may have better outcomes with other books.
I am such a sucker for any type of charcuteries cookbook. They are always just so aesthetically pleasing, and make me want to replicate everything! Too bad I don't entertain enough to try all of these! I really liked that it shown techniques for cutting and shaping cheese, meats, and veggies. Also great added bonus was the drink parings! This is a very useful charcuterie spread book that has so many cool artful board ideas. It really sparks ideas and lays out the tools needed and the basics of charcuterie 101. It’s cool how it is laid out from the basics, to winter, spring, summer, and fall boards. You can use this all year round and the end even has a section on wine pairings and tips for entertaining. The author, Sarah Zimmerman Tuthill in the introduction mentions that her mantra became, “Keep it simple but make it memorable,” and that's really the feel of this book. The spreads and stylings are beautiful. It even goes into detail about how to choose your cheeses, and meats to create a balance on your platter. I think this is such a treasure of a cookbook if you host a lot or even if you want to make a small board for just yourself. She teaches you how to make prosciutto ribbons, salami roses, cucumber florets and more. I was giddy going through every page and the steps. It definitely fuels creativity in the kitchen. Totally worth buying.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Globe Pequot for sharing this book with me in exchange for my honest review.
In recent years I have become more interested in more aesthetic displays of foods for entertaining purposes instead of just cooking fancy appetizers and dinners for my guests. While looking at pretty pictures online or in magazines and observing my friend’s displays is helpful, when it comes to making my own, the options and choices are often overwhelming, and I end up with more items than necessary.
This author does a great job of presenting those options in a clear and organized manner, then explaining how to pick and display a variety without getting overwhelmed by all the details and choices. And of course, there are pretty pictures of beautiful displays for examples, though I do wish there had been picture examples for all of the boards described in the text. The addition of complementary decor and cocktails was a great touch. I will definitely make some of the accompanying cocktails, maybe even just for me!
There were some creative examples that wouldn’t have occurred to me to display as a board. I loved the idea of a caramel apple board for a family afternoon snack in the fall. I also enjoyed the personal stories that were incorporated between the display examples. They were short and succinct, the perfect length, not too long, but just enough to complement the pictures and descriptions of the boards with warm family moments.
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking to spruce up their aesthetic or who loves to entertain but doesn’t want to spend time cooking in a hot kitchen before having company over. Inspiring ideas and straight-forward explanations on how to create a beautiful board that anyone would be proud of. I can’t wait to integrate all I’ve learned for my next hosting experience.
A word on format. I reviewed an advanced digital copy of this book. As with other books displaying text style tables, illustrations or photos, I found the kindle display didn’t work well with it, though it was fine in other apps displayed more as a pdf style format with the photos and tables in the correct positions. I can’t speak to the final digital display. I plan to acquire a physical copy of the book for my kitchen library.

3.5 stars
There was good info on here to read about making selections of items for your board, but I found the book a little lacking in completed examples. Those were separated into chapters by season. Each of three fancier boards had a good styling tip, a corresponding drink and decor suggestion, which would work well for a party. There were also a few pages in Everyday Boards for each season.
The book has very few recipes, except for the drink pairings. This book might work best if you already have some experience with boards and are wanting new ideas, but I didn't feel like it was detailed enough for true beginners.
The book was adequate but did not feel like anything very different from other similar cookbooks I have read.
Thank you NetGalley, Globe Pequot and Sarah Tuthill for this copy of Gathering Boards. This book shows you how to make beautiful and delicious charcuterie boards for every season. Sarah Tuthill shares selecting appropriate ingredients and displaying them attractively. She includes cocktail recipes to complement the boards.
