I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley. Thank you for the opportunity.
I followed the author on Facebook and other social media and he has been absolute inspiration and helped me I'm so glad that I have this book.
This is such a fantastic, informative book, whether you're trans or an ally. It's another title for my List of Things I Wish Everyone Would Read.
Full disclosure: I was unfamiliar with Jamie Raines prior to reading this book. For those who, like me, may not be familiar: Jamie Raines is a YouTuber and LGBTQ+ activist who has posted numerous YouTube videos under the username JammiDodger to document his transition and address trans issues. He also hosts the podcast Queerphoria. Raines is forthright about these credentials, as well as his doctoral work on psychology related to trans individuals.
I mention these credentials up top because, as I read the book, his experience with storytelling and science were both clear even without me knowing anything about him in advance. Raines's voice is the perfect blend of welcoming, personal, and advisory without being too general or too strict. Raines shares his direct experiences, but also includes several other trans individuals' experiences to highlight how, while they may share certain characteristics, they are not all the same. I also appreciate that Raines's work address allies as well as trans individuals.
While not trans myself, as an ally I felt I learned a great deal from reading Raines's book, and I would highly recommend it. It's affirming, reader friendly, practical, and welcoming.
This book gives not only Jamie's perspective on being Trans, but highlights others as well. I thought this was very well written and has lots of great information for people looking into transitioning, currently on that journey or is an ally wanting to learn more. Most of the help/references are of course British and for people in the UK, but I do believe it has great information for everyone. I really liked the different blurbs about others experiences and the great information about surgeries and hormones! There are sections written for allies that explains how they can understand and help their friends/families with transitioning. They even had a chapter for nonbinary people and as someone who is nonbinary, I really loved that. Nonbinary people are under the Trans umbrella so it was nice to be included. I have followed Jamie on YouTube for nearly a decade and have enjoyed his content. If you have as well, you are sure to like this book!
I really loved Jamie's writing style and Shabaa's additions. He's a good writer. I also enjoyed the dad jokes. The book's a helpful guide and can be read by everybody. And I think everybody should read it.
The T in LGBT is an exceptionally well-written and captivating read that delves into Jamie's trans experience with great warmth and kindness. Jamie isn't afraid to share his struggles as well as the joy he's found in his transness. As a member of the LGBT+ community myself (the L), and with a non-binary sibling, I was excited to dive into this book and wasn't disappointed.
While some may argue that it's not our job to educate others on LGBT+ topics, Jamie's book successfully challenges this belief by providing both allies and community members with a valuable resource and insight into the trans experience. His writing is infused with his unique voice, making it easy to stay engaged throughout, and the inclusion of artwork and other trans voices make it an even more diverse and appealing read.
For anyone looking to better understand and support the trans community, I would wholeheartedly recommend this amazing book.
I grew up watching Jammidodger on Youtube, so being able to read the ARC for this was an amazing opportunity. Jamie was one of the main reasons that I feel as secure in my trans self as I do now. Thanks, Jamie. As for the book, I found it very interesting! Raines combines factual research with personal experience, and the combination is really beautiful. He is respectful of all ideas and viewpoints, and he even inspired me to look into his doctorate research. Great book :)
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book!
I had seen a couple of videos of Jamie before, so I knew of him, but I wasn’t as familiar as some longtime viewers may be in comparison. Not that that’s very relevant haha.
This book was great! The combination of personal stories, factual information, and the occasional funny joke that made me almost giggle out loud in the train was very fun to read. It was educational too: I consider myself somewhat educated when it comes to the experience of being transgender (as educated as a cisgender person can be), but there are still some new things that I learned, or details that I didn’t know of before! And of course, every person has their own unique story on top of that, so the inclusion of multiple trans voices in this book really emphasized that.
The book is written in a casual tone is how I can describe it best, which is something I personally like in non-fiction, depending on the book and its intent. I can also appreciate more formal/academic writing, but I think considering what this book’s intent was, the more laid back writing fit very well.
I also thought the inclusion of advice etc for trans people and allies seperatet was a smart decision, and it was also nice to see Jamie’s wife occasionally pop in with advice :)
I think this book is a great guide for people who have newly come out, and for cisgender people who want to learn more about being transgender and people’s individual experiences, along with some interesting information. Overall it’s just very comprehensive and has all of the basics put together, which was something I wish I had for a long time.
Another thing, this is the boring uni student in me, I loved that Jamie references research articles in this book and also includes more sources at the end to look into. You never stop learning :D.
So yeah, overall I really enjoyed the T in LGBT and it’s funny yet informative tone and message
Yeah this was really good! It was very informative (although I'm trans and knew the information already, I tried to read it as if was new to me), and the way the chapters were layed out was really helpful. The dadjokes were my jam. I recommend.
I was so excited to receive this book as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)! I was excited when Jamie Raines, AKA Jammidodger on YouTube, announced this book on his channel. I was excited when I saw it was available to request on NetGalley. I’ve just been very excited about this book, but did it live up to the hype?
YES!
Part memoir, part practical guide, this book goes into every aspect of being trans from discovery to transitioning to coming out. It isn’t just the author’s perspective, either. It features quotes from various trans people, including where they fit in under the large trans umbrella: trans men and women, trans mascs and femmes, nonbinary, and everything in between.
In the harder sections, like dealing with the decision to and fallout from coming out, this book feels like a hug. This book does in 256 pages what many books cannot, it makes you feel seen and heard.
This isn’t just for those who are or think they might be trans either. It features helpful tips for allies and seeks to educate the reader.

This book was full of helpful information and it is great to see a trans author representing their journey and helping others on their own journey,
This was well-written and informative and a great resource for both trans folk and allies. It's a good mix of academically delivered information and fun, light-hearted anecdotes and factiods.
This is a really helpful book, both for people on the trans spectrum as allies. I really like Jamie's videos, and the way he fuses fun with academics, and he does the same in this book. Really like it.
The T in LGBT does a great job of serving both Trans people and allies with explanations about a large amount of transition related topics. It provides a good comprehensive understanding about what transition and transness looks like, both offering Jamie's perspective and highlighting differing viewpoints from other trans and nonbinary people. This helps show that there's not just one way to be trans and can be soothing to a trans reader searching for themself in the pages and as insight to just how different transition can be for everyone. I would recommend this book to anyone who's trying to dip their toe into understanding trans identity and transition without being overwhelmed by all the information you can find online.
Pride month is just around the corner, and this book is a perfect read for all LGBT+ and allies alike!
The trans experience is such a unique and important experience to share. I am privileged to have access to books like this that break down all the personal details that go into transitioning. I especially appreciate the chapters on gender and body dysmorphia. Many can relate, even if only a little, to that feeling of not quite fitting in. The trans experience is valuable to all, and can pave the way for a world where gender is a spectrum and an expression, not rigid rules to follow.
It’s our responsibility to be as educated as possible to help support our fellow trans communities. This book is a great introduction to do just that.
I highly recommend it! Support trans voices!
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this ARC.

This book is incredible!! It's a must-read for Trans Folks and Allies, filled to the brim with helpful information, lots of advice and community!
Being agender, I absolutely loved seeing the stories of the enby folks who contributed to this wonderful book (as well as all the other contributors' stories!)!
Thank you so much Jamie for putting together an extensive list of resources, as well as sharing a bit more of your story!
Suffice to say, I highly recommend checking out this book!!!
