This is a fantastic cookbook! The recipes are easy to follow and there is a large variety of them in this cookbook. The recipes I'm most excited to try are the Confetti Cake with Berry Buttercream, Blueberry Muffin Cake, Banana Bread Bars,Banana Bread Brownies,Banana Cream Pie,Pumpkin Caramel Ice Cream Cake, S'mores Bars, Pumpkin Bars, Pretzel Shortbread Fingers,Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake and the Giant Pop Tart. There are also recipes for various buttercreams, doughs and a no churn ice cream. This is a really through cookbook that I would recommend. Special Thank You to Sarah Kieffer, Chronicle Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review
This is a lovely dessert cookbook. There's plenty of recipes I want to try out!
The introduction section is well written and has useful descriptions and explanations on her choices. especially if you're an experienced beginner.
The food photography is very tempting.
I generally appreciate the organization of the book. The recipes are all clear and easy to follow. I did get a little annoyed at the references to other recipes that were found elsewhere in the book. My cookbook preference is to have recipes that require other recipes to have the required secondary recipe follow immediately after.
Sarah Kieffer's books are the cure for all of us who crave just a little something sweet to make it through the afternoon lull! 100 Afternoon Sweets is chock full of accessible and delectable recipes, accompanied by beautiful photography and explicit instructions on how to achieve delicious results. A must-have for every baker and a wonderful gift to share with friends and family alike. Sarah churns out recipes like she churns out beautiful books - each and every one is a winner!
Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for this ARC.
100 Afternoon Sweets is a beautifully photographed cookbook with recipes developed and curated by Sarah Kieffer. Released 1st Oct 2024 by Chronicle Books, it's 304 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.
Another excellent collection from this prolific and talented author. This is a definitive and extensive collection of recipes with something for everyone - from classics to fairly fancy and innovative. These will gladden the hearts of anyone who has ever searched in vain for a recipe to take to a family gathering or other event. This will become a staple for every cook who enjoys baking sweet treats.
The introduction (indeed the whole book) is written very clearly and covers everything from tools to supplies to "how-to" tutorials and techniques. The recipes are grouped roughly thematically: one bowl bakes, brownies blondies & bars, pie bakes, no bakes, weekend projects, partial recipes/frostings/alternate doughs, and extras (toppings, creams, sauces).
The recipes have their ingredients listed bullet style in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard with metric measurements in parentheses (yay!). Special tools and ingredients are also listed, along with yields and cooking directions. Yields, description, and prep time are included in a header bar. Most of the ingredients are easily sourced at any moderately well stocked grocery store.
The book also includes a short author bio and conversion charts, along with an index including an ingredients index. There is a short bibliography and links for sourcing specialized ingredients and equipment. The recipes themselves are varied, and represent a wide variety of holidays and occasions to celebrate. They're tasty and many are simple and easy to prepare, requiring few ingredients and little prep time. Other recipes are *very* fancy and will impress even the most jaded tastes.
Five stars. This is a winner collection. It would make an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, gifting, or home use. This volume coordinates in art and printing style with the other books in the series.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
Love me some sweet snacks...
I especially enjoy an easy one bowl snacking cake (or treat) and this book is packed with tons of recipes.
There's a hundred, some very easy and few more complicated treats.
Peanut butter and jelly cake, sign me up!
Highly recommend.
As an avid amateur baker, I am always looking for new recipes that use ingredients that are familiar to mine and my kids palates and ingredients that are common and easy to find in my small-er town grocery store. 100 Afternoon Sweets by Sarah Kieffer hits all those boxes out of the park! Unique pairings and the well loved classics shine equally bright in this cookbook and I am so grateful for the ARC! As much as I loved being able to look at this on my phone in an e-book format, I NEED this physical book in my kitchen so I can make my way through all 100 recipes! As an added bonus, Sarah added in a few traditional techniques in the back such as brown butter (my kryptonite) and whipped cream - easy staples is a bakers kitchen but I am always on the hunt for the perfect technique and recipe.
Thank you again to Netgalley, Sarah Kieffer and Chronicle Books for the ARC!
This is not just a wonderful recipe book; it's also a beautiful story, weaving in memories that Kieffer has tied to the treats and sweets. Each recipe includes a photo and the steps are well written and easy to follow. She has also included bits of poetry to tie each section together. All in all, a lovely, enjoyable book.
A beautiful treasure trove of delicious afternoon treats. I can see making several of the recipes and having a right proper afternoon tea. I'm excited to dive in!
You had me at BUTTERCREAM. Who knew that there were so many different kinds? In an age of "high protein hacks" and artificial sweeteners, I love a book full of recipes for wholesome, delicious, home baked treats. Classics like blondie brownies and peanut butter pie run side by side with chocolate red wine cake and a recipe for a giant POP TART! I personally plan to take a crack at the Apricot Almond Croissant first.
I'm a new fan of Sarah Kieffer - a fellow Minnesotan - and thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this great book!
Another awesome baking book from Sarah Kieffer! Recipes are in chapters on One Bowl Bakes; Brownies, Blondies, and Bars; Pie Bakes; No Bakes; For a Crowd; Weekend Projects; Beginnings and Ends (components of other recipes); and Extras (things like sauces, and these aren't counted towards the 100).
Every recipe has a gorgeous and mouth-watering color photo. I want to make so many I'm not sure where to start. There are lots of classic flavors in here but also some fun surprises, like Passion Fruit S'mores Pie.
Wonderful book, and would make a perfect holiday gift for the dessert and baking lover in your life.
I love the rare event when a cookbook pops up on NetGalley - especially when it’s an author who I love - Sarah Kieffer is one of those cookbook authors. I have both of her other books (and highly recommend both of them) and I love her blog thevanillabeanblog.com. Her brownie cookie with peanut butter recipe is on my regular rotation.
I have been making my way through this one all summer and I have some thoughts - first of all, I have been baking my whole life and I have taken at least two months of baking courses so I know how to bake and I have a reservoir of recipes that I cycle through for my basics. Like her other books the recipes are fun and innovative. The bourbon blondies and chocolate red wine cake are both now part of my regular rotation, but the cookie bars just didn’t do it for us, they weren’t bad, they just weren’t as chewy as we would have liked (so they may work for some). My main issue with some of the recipes is that they are a bit more complicated than need be - if I am going to choose a basic brownie recipe I’m not going to pick one that uses 6 eggs. Many of the recipes just require too many eggs or ingredients I don’t usually have on hand (and I have a pretty well stocked house) so I rarely could just open and make a recipe. But if I want a creative special recipe that will bring on a wow factor (like peanut butter and jelly cake) I will use this book. That being said, there are a few recipes that I will definitely keep on hand for the future and to be honest, that is the most you can ask of a cookbook - a few recipes that you make over and over (and people keep requesting). This is a book I would definitely want on my shelf (especially to keep the other two company).
Thank you to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for the ARC to review
Another winner from Sarah Kieffer! This book has a recipe for everyone and every occasion. I found it so helpful that there was also a section for large batches for crowds and gatherings. There's a picture to go along with every recipe, which as a home baker I always find incredibly helpful for completing a recipe. I can already tell there will be a lot of favorites in my house from the Pecan Espresso Bars, to the Pumpkin Streusel Pie and especially the Strawberry Balsamic Shortcake Ice Cream Bars!! There's also a great resource of base recipes in the back that I cannot wait to try.
This is a great resource for either beginner bakers or those short on time. Kieffer structures recipes with a good proportion of pictures, thoughtful chapters (e.g., one bowl, pies, no bake, weekend projects), and a nice variety of recipes with ingredients you can widely find when you're in the mood to bake. I liked how she included gram equivalents for those who like to have weighted baking, like I'm getting into now.
The Pumpkin bars were easy to make and a success with the picky eaters in my family!
Thank you to Chronicle Books and Netgalley for an ARC.
I am a big fan of Kieffer's previous cookbooks (all hits, no misses!) and this one is equal in quality to the prior titles. Recipes are always easy to follow, TASTY, and the simple layout with quality photos makes for a timeless collection for your kitchen (yes, buy her collection. I have and I'm here to be the best-worst influence on your book buying budget).
What I particularly loved about 100 Afternoon Sweets:
*Perfected classic cakes
*Interesting flavor combinations (cranberry caramel upside-down cake?! Chocolate & red wine in baking?--I wish I liked wine so I could cheerfully try that one)
*Most excited to try: Raspberry Poppyseed Cake, Blueberry Muffin Cake (how heavenly does that sound for accompanying an afternoon coffee??), Banana Bread Brownies (OMS, YES PLEASE!), and Raisin Rum Bars (just because the title makes me miss my grampa)
SO excited for my pre-order to arrive and a copy to arrive at my local library!
My thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the opportunity to preview this title in exchange for my honest review!
I might be a bit biased as I own the author’s 100 Cookies and Baking for the Holidays and both have produced colleague, family and friend-approved desserts that have those same people asking when I’m baking next! This book is no different - the Brownie 2.0 is incredibly delicious and I’m looking forward to purchasing this book and baking more of the recipes. The recipes are easy to follow, not overly complicated, and I love that she provides both types of measures as I prefer to bake in weights as it tends to be more accurate in baking.
This book is for everyone who enjoys baking, both beginners and experts alike.
Strongly recommend!
Sarah Kieffer is now an autobuy cookbook author for me. Her recipes are always so appealing and I love the layout of her cookbooks.
So many delicious sweets in this cookbook!
A huge thing for me with cookbooks is the layout and pictures and this book did a fantastic job on both of those things! The layout is easy to read, view & use. The pictures are abundant and beautiful!
Towards the beginning of the book she went into detail about her baking adventures so we got to know her, how to use the book. some of the ingredients and cooking items that will be used in it. I thought this was nice instead of diving right into the recipes. It was nice to learn about her as well as get a little introduction to things in the recipes!
The recipes themselves are displayed nicely on the page with beautiful pictures for each recipe! I love the way that she broke down the categories for the recipes as well, it made it really easy to come back to and find something specific like a pie or a no bake recipe!
So far I have only tried a few of the recipes but each I tried was really good. I can't wait to try more! I like that she uses pretty common and easy to find ingredients as well.
I have a sweet tooth and have become an avid baker over the last 10 years. I have previously bought several of this authors books in the past and have not yet been disappointed with her recipes. So, imagine my surprise to see she has another book coming out in October. Color me happy! Thank you to NetGalley, Chronicle Books, and Sarah Kieffer for allowing me to review an advance copy of "100 Afternoon Sweets".
I love that most all of her recipes use ingredients that can usually be found in my kitchen. I enjoy her easy descriptions and thoughtful notes with each recipe. The book is filled with "literally" a hundred sweet bakes (bars, cakes, cookies) that all sound delicious. I can see myself making just about all of these recipes at some point in the future. Maybe I'll just work my way through the recipes one by one.
That said, I gave a few a try before writing this review, and I was thrilled with each of them. The "My Perfect Afternoon Snacking" is delicious and, as the name says, perfect. I love cake without frosting (which can sometimes be overly sweet) so this was right up my alley. I also tried something outside my wheelhouse and baked the "Maple Orange Carrot Cake". To my delight it was a big hit with my family. I also tried out the "Pretzel Shortbread Fingers". So easy, and I love the salty touch the pretzels add to the shortbread. Perfect with a cup of tea in the afternoon.
Whether you are new to baking or are a pro, this is a fantastic book to have on hand.
Sarah Kieffer has written another brilliant book of treats. She can do no wrong. There is no other baker that is an auto-buy author for me. I will bake whatever she tells me to.
She consistently develops recipes that are delicious and accessible. The instructions are easy to read and understand. My favorites from this entry were the big Pop Tart and the Kitchen Sink Crispy Treats.
If you love Sarah Kieffer add this book to your collection. Trust me. If you are new to her recipes, you will not be disappointed.
Thank you to Chronicle Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoy this series of baking books and the recipes they provide. Afternoon sweets includes delicious-looking bakes like a pie version of Millionaire's shortbread, Bourbon Blondies, and Red Velvet Ice Cream Cake. My only disappointment with the title was that starting around 80 or so, the "recipes" were of components like icing, ganache, etc. that are used in the previous recipes. I was hoping for 100 unique recipes, but only got 80.
