This is my second book by this author and she has been becoming a favorite! The first one was the maids diary and this one followed suit! Ms white has such a way of weaving a story where I feel so secure in thinking, I totally know what's going on and then freaking all of a sudden she turns a whole 180° and gives me whiplash. Then I'm left thinking well what the heck just happened.
I loved how this story was...ugh how do I explain it?! Ok ok you remember in Shrek how Shrek was saying ogres are like onions? Well that's kind of how this story is. It's dark and twisty and messed up from the get go but I think my favorite part is that no one is truly innocent. Everyone has a part to play for things to play out the way they did and this story demonstrates that perfectly. Twists and turns left and right and just had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. I bet this would be freaking amazing on audio!
Ms white, you may never read this but welcome to my auto buy list!
Wow…what a twisted read! Chloe, a bored young woman caring for her ill mother, catches a glimpse of her new neighbors and is instantly enamored of the stylish woman while taking an instant dislike to her husband. Loren Anne White helps the reader along as she labels the chapters Before the Hit and Run, the Hit and Run, and After the Hit and Run.
As Chloe becomes more and more intent on spying on her new neighbors, we learn so many details and secrets about Jemma and Adam. As their lives unravel, the reader becomes a voyeur, observing their interactions and reactions.
Unfortunately I did not find any of the main characters to be likable so although I found the revelations very shocking I found myself apathetic. I so wish I would have been excited about rooting for one of them. I loved the pacing and the tension.
Loren Anne White knows how to hold her reader’s focus and attention and weaves her magic so very effectively throughout her stories. Loved the setting for this read, and the novelty of some of the aspects of her characters. Many many thanks to Loren Anne White, Montlake, and NetGalley for providing me with an arc of this thriller. Four and a half stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake for this read. Books written by Loreth Ann White have not missed at all for the last few that I have read. They all are very suspenseful and twisty. This was no different and I enjoyed this read. Excited to see what she has next!
I’d say overall, I enjoyed the book. I think I loved more of it until the end, when I was really hoping for a really good twist.
I enjoyed the characters, and I enjoyed the plot and the story. This author always throw something in to confuse me and has great attention to details in the storyline as well.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys suspense, couple disputes, some characters that will throw you off in all the good ways as well as a good storyline with twist and turns
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
wow can this author write a thriller or what... edge of the seat stuff
you just wont know what to expect with this book...
not willing to give any secrets out but i recommend you read this book
This thriller starts off at a promising pace but I felt that the middle 50% of the book slowed down quite a bit. I would have preferred that there be more of a build up to the climax. Around 75%, things picked up and progressed nicely. The author kept me guessing as to what really happened and who was actually involved. At one point I wasn't even sure who was still alive! Unfortunately the last portion of the book petered off again and just summed up everyone's current lives.
This is my first book by Loreth Anne White. I see she has several other standalone books and I'd like to read another one to have something to compare this one to.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cheakamus House Publishing. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you, Netgalley, Loreth Anne White, and Montlake for the ebook. This was a twisty thriller that just kept getting me!! I don't know what I was expecting but this was just pleasantly thrilling! A must read!

I really enjoyed this psychological, domestic thriller. It was a very fast read/listen with a lot of TWISTS! I think fans of Nicole Trope and Megan Miranda will enjoy this!
I so rarely give out five stars over on Goodreads, but The Swimmer by Loreith Anne White checked every box for me. It was fantastic.
This is my criteria for a five-star book:
The book must capture my attention in the opening pages
I want to have a hard time putting the book down
The characters don’t have to be likable, but they have to be interesting
The plot needs to move forward as tension rises
Any boring spots/paragraphs/dialogue must be very infrequent. I can’t stand pointless dialogue and paragraphs of information dumping
Things need to make sense. Sometimes authors just make coincidences too outrageous.
Typically, this author writes good books, but The Swimmer was just five-star excellence!
Socially awkward Chloe Cooper divides her time between dog walking, bartending, caring for her ailing mother, and at a safe distance, watching people and inventing the stories of their lives. Like Chloe’s new neighbors: glamorous influencer Jemma Spengler and Jemma’s husband, Adam, a renowned surgeon. They’re attractive, wealthy, and in a house of open windows, so exposed.
A move to the Pacific Northwest is supposed to be a fresh start for Jemma and Adam. It’s a renewed commitment to a marriage fractured by secrets. A chance to work through the tragic losses in their past. For Jemma, however, this new beginning also comes with an unnerving sensation that she’s being watched.
Then, on a fog-shrouded beach early in the morning, Chloe witnesses the murder of a swimmer. Her suspicions aroused, she suddenly sees her neighbors in a sinister new light. But as a detective and her partner close in, nothing is quite as it seems. Because the Spenglers are not the only ones with secrets. And Chloe isn’t the only one who’s been watching.
THE SWIMMER by Loreth Anne White is a contemporary, adult, psychological thriller focusing on forty year old bartender Chloe Cooper, Dr. Adam and Jemma Spengler, and Gloria Bergson.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers
Told from several omniscient third person perspectives (Chloe, Adam,Jemma, Gloria) following two timelines (present day and 2019) THE SWIMMER focuses on the murder of a woman swimming in Jerrin Bay. Chloe Cooper is a bit of an oddball who has returned home to British Columbia, Canada to take care of her dying mother but with the arrival of their new neighbors, Chloe begins to spy and stalk Dr. Adam and Jemma Spengler . Every morning, Chloe would watch Jemma Spengler swim in the bay but one morning Chloe witnesses the gruesome murder of the woman in question, a woman she believes to be Jemma Spengler. As the truth begins to unravel, Chloe finds herself caught in the middle of a storm of betrayal and vengeance wherein she will become the prime suspect in another grizzly murder.
THE SWIMMER is a detailed, dramatic, gritty and raw look at madness and obsession, betrayal and vengeance, secrets and lies, and dysfunctional family dynamics. With a surprise gesture to one of Canada’s most prolific serial killers, Loreth Anne White pulls the reader down the rabbit hole of murder, distrust, delusion and fascination.

Another wonderful installment from Loretta Anne White. If you need a quick page gripping turner her books are definitely for you. My first book by her was the maids diary and that audiobook had me hooked from the first word. This book was very similar and not to mention look at the beautiful covers her books always have. Highly recommend this and any of her books.
The Swimmer by Loreth Anne White is an absolutely captivating thriller.
A riveting and thrilling story that kept me guessing until the very end! It was so exciting to read with all the twists and turns, incredible characters, and intriguing plot.
4.5 ⭐️ rounded up. This was such a great book! It hooked me from the start, and kept me invested throughout. I loved the unique format of the story that included past POVs and excerpts from a documentary. These characters— they were so unlikeable, but well developed. This story had the perfect culmination of obsession, secrets, and revenge. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going on, and I didn’t want to put it down. I highly recommend this twisty thriller! If you haven’t read any books by Loreth Anne White, you are missing out!

Thank you Netgalley and Montlake for the chance to read an ARC of The swimmer by Loreth Anne White. This is the 2nd book of the author's that I have read and both of them had me on the edge of my seat furiously turning pages to see what happens next. The swimmer is a psychological twisty thriller with three main characters (Chloe, Adam and Jemma) that are creepy and detestable. Normally this is a bit of a turnoff for me as I usually want to like one of the characters in a book...no matter; there is something so off about Chloe, that I had to know why!!! The plot is divided into several parts: Before the hit and run; After the hit and run; and a true crime podcast called “It’s Criminal: She’s Been Watching You-The Chloe Cooper Story”. The podcast is cleverly woven throughout the story to give you additional information and makes the story even more compelling. I love the fact that the book takes place in British Columbia!!!
I totally recommend not only The swimmer but the author as well, and while the podcast is featured in an earlier book, this is definitely a stand alone.
This one kept me guessing from the start to the end. Little reveals placed throughout the book kept me on my toes.
The first half of the book was split between before the hit and run, after the hit and run and a podcast called It's Criminal. The story is quite vague and kept me filling in the gaps with what I thought was facts, but alas there was a little bit of bait and switch that had me guessing wrong.
In the second half of the book, the facts of the hit and run are apparent, but there is a little cat and mouse game with the characters and a few more surprise reveals.
None of the characters are particularly likable but I was engaged in the story and finished it quite quickly.
I am really a fan of this trend of misdirection as a new trope. The author gives me just enough facts for me run off in the wrong direction.
Reba Buhr is a new to me narrator, but she pulled off the suspense, misdirection and twists in this one. She made listening enjoyable and the story engaging. I would definitely recommend listening to this one.
This book is a true page turner. I caught myself staying up late because I could not put this book down. I liked how unique the main character was and all the twists that kept popping up. I also loved the mystery that the interviews added to the story. This definitely isn’t a book to miss.
THE SWIMMER was a roller coaster by Loreth Anne White and did a great job of drawing you in from the beginning. The characters are distinct and yet unreliable, leading to twists and turns as the plot develops. Despite the length, this was a highly readable tale - entertaining and kept you moving.
Thanks to NetGalley and Montlake Books for the opportunity to read and review THE SWIMMER.
Wowee! The Swimmer is diabolically fantastic! This was my first read by Loreth Anne White, and I will definitely be reading more. The main character, Chloe, is eccentric, socially challenged, a loner and fascinated with the people around her. Despite her peculiarity, I found myself rooting for her throughout the book. There are also plenty of self-centered characters, trauma, abuse, murder, mental instability, spying and more. It had me questioning who could be trusted. I had a hard time putting it down - highly recommend! 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the digital ARC.
📚: The Swimmer by Loreth Anne White
⭐️: 3/5
The gist: Chloe Cooper is about to turn 40. She leads a quiet, secluded life of dog walking, caring for her ill mother, and bartending. She has an eye for detail - always remembering how customers prefer their drinks, as well as an eye for questionable behavior, particularly from her new neighbors who just moved in. And when an early morning swimmer is found dead by a hit and run, Chloe's suspicions only heighten.
The good: The latter half of this book gives a thriller reader what they (or at least, what this thriller reader) wants - a quick pace and a plot pivot that gave me a momentary pause. The dual POVs worked well here, as well as utilizing a true crime-style documentary as another narration tool.
The eh: It took me 3 days to fully get through this book - an almost unheard of amount of time for me. The first half of the book was at a snail's pace, with nothing completely gripping me to hold on and not put it down. While the latter plot pivot (I wouldn't stay it's a full twist) gripped me, the ending ultimately felt flat.
Thanks to Montlake Publishing via @netgalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. The Swimmer comes out tomorrow, September 10th.
Loreth Anne White writes some great thrillers, so I didn't hesitate to pick this one up when I saw it. I've enjoyed every single book I've read by this author.
Description:
Socially awkward Chloe Cooper divides her time between dog walking, bartending, caring for her ailing mother, and at a safe distance, watching people and inventing the stories of their lives. Like Chloe’s new neighbors: glamorous influencer Jemma Spengler and Jemma’s husband, Adam, a renowned surgeon. They’re attractive, wealthy, and in a house of open windows, so exposed.

My Thoughts:
Chloe Cooper is a creepy character who comes across as as a stalker - watching her neighbors with binoculars, finding ways to get into their house, messing with their things. She is socially inept, but has a job as a bartender (while she has held many different jobs previously, none seeming to last). The story takes off when Chloe witnesses a jet skier intentionally run over a swimmer. Events begin unfurling and theories abound. The story is well plotted and kept me guessing. I was so sure I had it figured out, only to be proven totally off-base. This book is recommended to anyone who likes a good thriller.
Thanks to Montlake through Netgalley for an advance copy.
