Target Acquired was my first novel by Lynette Eason. I was excited to find a Christian based book that was a mystery/thriller and romance. I really appreciate the author for stepping into the genre because I find that a lot of Christian fiction is strictly romance.
All that being said I really wanted to like this book but in all honesty it fell a little short for me. I found the premise of the book was intriguing, however the execution with unbelievable. I wanted this to be a thrilling page turner and it just wasn’t for me. There were awkward moments in dialogue between characters that I didn’t think were needed. I did appreciate the thread of the characters Christian faith in the story.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bakers Publishing Group for the ARC for my honest review.
Kenzie King has finally got her dream job. Tactical medic on a SWAT team. Some of the team members don't think she belongs there. One of their friends applied for the job and she got it. Plus she's a woman. Cole Garrison is in charge of the SWAT team. He has to be careful not to cross any lines as he has known Kenzie for a long time. He also as feelings for her that he wants to hide. Things get worse when someone keeps trying to kill Kenzie and it doesn't seem to matter who gets in the way.
I like the action and how Cole and Kenzie worked out their feelings for each other. It kept me reading till the end.
I received this book from Revell Publishing via Net/Galley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
Kenzie King serves as a medic on the SWAT Team, having earned her place through hard work. Raised alongside her older brothers, she's as tough as any member of the team. The team leader, Cole Garrison, is intentionally maintaining a distance from Kenzie. It appears that someone is targeting their team, with Kenzie being the primary focus. Her father, once the police chief, was injured in an accident that claimed her mother's life, and he suspects it was no mere accident. As the perpetrator continues to target the team, bringing Kenzie and Cole closer, the team faces challenges.
3.5 stars I had an ARC from netGalley for this book and I appreciated them giving me a copy. This is the 2nd in the series and the characters are introduced in book 1 of the Lake City Heroes series. The action was good but I feel it was kind of over the top. The story was good. I guess I found it a little odd that a person who had gone through med school and became an MD would want to be on a SWAT team and push so hard to be a part of it. There is a dual timeline showing snippets of the lives of the grandparents of the two main characters. and it showed that there were ties to the two characters that went way back in time. The ending had a twist that I really didn't see coming so that is always a plus for me. A good, Christian, romantic suspense and a win for Eason. I was invested in the book from start to finish even though there were little parts that didn't quite ring true to me.
This was another intensely action packed book #2 in the Lake City Heroes series. It can, however, be read as a standalone too.
I was invested from the very beginning. Even when I wasn't able to sit and read, I couldn't wait to get back to the characters to see what was going to happen next.
Lynette Eason knows how to develop her characters in such a way that you find yourself cheering for them or infuriated with them. I went back and forth with who I thought the suspect was, but in the end, guessed correctly.
I look forward to continuing the series and getting to know more of the characters along the way.
I was graciously given an arc of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Such a great book! I couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series!
I received an ARC copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
I love this 2nd book in the Lake City Heroes series! It does have a little bit of split-time going on in this story, which I was not expecting... but thankfully, not a lot of the historical part, and both stories are good. I like both of the main characters, Kenzie and Cole, and the split-time part is about their ancestors. You will recognize some of the characters from the first book, if you have read it!
If you like romantic suspense, I think you will enjoy this book!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Lynette Eason heads off in a new direction in Target Acquired, and it’s a winner! Written with a historical plotline that influences the present, this new novel is a double-header, and I love this new style.
I don’t know if there’s enough of that former arc to call it a dual-timeline story – probably not – but it is enough to make the historian in me sit up and take notice. I love the way that Eason added a mystery to the past, giving us more bad guys, more things to figure out, and a more intricate plot.
I loved both parts. I love the way the heroine in the past stood up for herself in a time when that wasn’t easy, and I love the way that Kenzie tried hard to do the right thing when everything was stacked against her. I enjoyed seeing how her personal past made who she is and also how she grew past the flaws inherent in that history. She’s a cool leading lady.
Eason has created a really fun cast of characters in this series. I love reading about courageous people who are all in for their friends, and this Lake City Heroes series is comprised of exactly that. Eason doesn’t usually include history in her books, but by doing so here, these enjoyable characters became even more real.
I didn’t think the Lake City Heroes series could possibly improve, but Target Acquired is even better than the first book – and that’s saying something. Don’t sit on this novel – it’s a great summer read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Another great book from Lynette Eason! If you enjoy suspense with a little romance too, you will enjoy this book. Target Acquired is the 2nd book in the Lake City Heroes Series but stands alone as well so you don't have to have read the first book. (Although it is likely you will want to).
Kenzie King's hard work to has gotten her to her dream job as a medic for the SWAT team finds herself in a struggle to accepted as an equal team member on the all male team. That becomes even more complicated when she finds herself the target of a killer that puts not only her, but the whole team in danger.
One of the things that I love about Lynette's books is the character development. They are real people with real struggles, real emotions, real relationships. People that I feel like I could be friends with.
I loved the dual storyline in this book and how the story of Kenzie and Cole's grandparents weaves into their present lives.
If you are like me, it's a hard to put down until you are finished, kind of book and you will enjoy every minute.
This book had me wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next! I have to admit a the first chapter or two was a little slow and I was confused because it started a long time in the past. After the beginning couple chapters I loved it and I realized why it started in the past. I thought I had the book figured out then I kept reading and what I thought was incorrect. Once again Lynette Eason wrote a book I loved. I am so happy I was chosen to be one of the readers before the book was actually released! When this book is released I am sure everyone will love the book if they like any of Lynette Eason's other books!
I just finished reading Lynette Eason’s newest book from her Lake City Heroes series, Target Acquired, in 1 afternoon. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer because I loved these characters so much, I want to hang out with them forever!
It can be hard to find a good suspense thriller that is also in the Christian genre, and so when I found Eason’s books, I started devouring them immediately. I love the relationships she captures- I wish I could find such a wonderful group of friends in real life- but when you dive into her world, you feel like you’re a part of it. Eason writes strong, smart, enduring female leads and strong, capable men to be their counterparts. I thoroughly enjoy every book, but this Lake City Heroes series is by far my favorite and I cannot wait for the next one to come out.
I will admit that, especially in the beginning, I had a little trouble keeping all the characters straight in my head, but the character guide at the beginning helped with that. I noticed a few minor consistency issues (such as calling Nathan James’ new partner but then the next story has him working with an entirely different partner- a detail which could change prior to publication), but nothing that distracted me from the great storytelling, engaging writing, and fantastic characters and character development. Highly recommend anything by Lynette Eason, but especially this series!
I like it that Lynette Eason does not only have heroes but heroines, and sometimes they're the ones to save the day.
The case is suspenseful, intertwined with an old case and ancient family history. It couldn't get more personal.
The love story doesn't bring anything new. She has fallen for him years ago but believes he's out of reach. He was disappointed and now has trust issues. Working together, they both try to keep it friendly and professional.
Target Acquired
There is absolutely nothing better than reading another amazing mystery by Lynette Eason. "Target Acquired" is a must read! This is the second book in the "The Lake City Heroes" series. This could be read in order or it could stand alone.
Cole Garrison is the leader of Lake City swat team. He has a strong christian, whom was hurt in the past but is so ready to move on. Will that person be Kenzie King. He is very protective of Kenzie King and struggles with his feeling as her boss.
Kenzie is a strong woman that has to prove she is the best person for this all male swat team. Will she be able to continue to prove herself or will she give up because someone is trying to get her to throw in the towel.
The characters are well written and very likable. The storyline pulled me in from the very beginning and was hard to put down.
I highly recommend this book!
I received this advanced copy from the publisher company through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone.
I am always ready to dive into another suspense book and Lynette Eason is a favorite of mine! Target Acquired had moments of action and danger that took me by surprise and kept the characters looking over their shoulders until the final pages. I struggled a bit with this book and here are a few of the reasons. Kenzie and Cole had a bit of an awkward dynamic that really didn’t draw me into the story, and I felt like there was absolutely no romance or chemistry between the two of them. I really didn’t love the split time or historical aspect of this book at all. I didn’t feel like the connection to the present day circumstances were plausible enough to devote that many pages of the book to things that happened in the past. Without giving spoilers it’s hard to explain that more thoroughly, but I felt like those sections really took me out of the story and slowed the pacing down. The conclusion was hard for me to accept realistically.
While this book wasn’t my favorite there were still plenty of moments of danger and suspense to keep things interesting and getting to know characters from past and future books is always fun! Looking forward to the next in this series!
Target Acquired is another fantastic book by Lynette Eason.
Kenzie and Cole's story is so exciting from beginning to end. Kenzie being targeted, plus trying to fit in with an all male swat team, is stressful enough. Coupled with her growing feelings for her boss, Cole makes for a lot of tension in her life.
Cole is also wrestling with his feelings for Kenzie, plus dealing with her being someone's target.
The story kept me guessing. Every time time I thought I knew who was targeting her, I was wrong. The ending really blew my mind. Was not ready for that.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, and this is my honest review
Another nail biting intense book by the author. I enjoyed it thoroughly and found that the faith of the characters inspired me. A real page turner.
Lake City Heroes book #2
Synopsis in a few words:
Kenzie King has earned her place as a tactical medic on a SWAT team, a world dominated by all-male. She soon finds out that her arrival has rocked the boat and that not everyone on the team accepts her but she is committed to the job and will have to prove she is as good as they are....She soon finds herself caught between a cold case and a threat to her life.... Cole Garrison, her team leader, will help her navigate while they work to crack the case and find the culprit who is threatening her.
My thoughts:
The story:
The plot gives us a little of everything: lots of intrigue, high-octane action packed with many twists, slow and steady pacing, a bit of poignant moments, some soft romance to spike the narrative and clean humour to make us smile but most of all keeps us interested till the very end. The romance is sweet and clean as expected with Ms. Eason.
We have two timeline criss-crossing each other one is the contemporary story and the other takes us back to 1940. I love the backstory a lot. Eventually they connected and smoothly blend into an entertaining saga.
The characters:
Kenzie King is the image of women who pierced gender inequality with resilience determination and tenacity and faced challenges with courage and strength. By the end she won her colleagues respect and accepted as an equal member of the team.
With his big heart, protective instincts and indomitable spirits Cole Garrison’s dynamic personality brings heartwarming feelings to this inspiring tale.
The SWAT team is a group of tight-knit and courageous bunch of friends (colleagues) looking out for one another. The story is filled with their interactions.
Conclusion:
Well-written and said this story published by Revell is a clean read and meant for everyone.
Although “Target Acquired” is part of a series it stands well on its own.
Loved reading the inspirational and suspenseful story. When Kenzie gets on the SWAT medic team, someone. is targeting her and her. team, and. Cole, the leader, wants to. protect Kenzie. Read. the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read riveting story.
I jumped into Lynette Eason’s Lake City Heroes Series starting with Book #2, Target Acquired, and it was go-go-go from chapter 1. It’s a true mystery-suspense novel with action, explosions, dodging bullets (literally all these within the story, but not gory—could we define it as cosy Christian mystery, perhaps?) peppered throughout to give it a great pace that makes you want to read on to the next chapter, even though it’s already past midnight.
You’ll find some compelling red herrings and an unexpected killer character at the end (although, like all of Eason’s great novels, she does drop some small hints for those who want to play detective before the big reveal).
While first and foremost the genre of this novel is mystery-suspense, it’s always nice to see the faith belief of characters interwoven through the narrative in a light way, and it has a clean romance storyline, which I love and keep returning to Eason’s work.
I highly recommend this book for those who have read past series by Eason, Lynn H. Blackburn or Colleen Coble, or those looking for a fresh and compelling page-turner in the Christian mystery-suspense with a side dish of romance.
As I haven’t read the first book in this series, Target Acquired now has me wanting to go hunt down Book #1 and learn more about the different characters she has in this series’ friendship group. I’ll definitely be first to line up to read the next Lake City Heroes story (Book #3) when she releases it…not too long, please. We want more of these Lake City Heroes!
All the swoon and all the feels. Gah! Cole and Kenzie together just..so much!! Their interactions are just a warm blanket to wrap myself in, especially Cole’s protective nature! I smiled so much and my heart was just warmed more and more. The perfect romance. Humor and banter, guns and childhood friendships, faith and family and mysteries and more! I blazed through this brother’s best friend romance (my fav trope). There were suspicions all around as the past unraveled alongside the present in a dual timeline investigation. Secrets and grudges and a lot of danger. This Christian romantic suspense was better than I was expecting (and I had high expectations) and I cannot wait for more.
I received an eARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
