I was immediately intrigued by this book as the time is set in the 1930's in LA. The story is about two Chinese American sisters who own a flower stand trying to make a living to provide for their family. As the two sisters were on their daily route to sell their flowers they find something they did not expect. Through their experiences with how Asians Americans were treated at this time the sisters do not trust the authorities. They suspect something sinister is at play. So, they start to play detective to find out what really happened and what is the truth. This story is mysterious. It's about family, friendship, and culture. I liked how the story depicts the struggles that immigrant families faced trying to live the American dream during this time. That was very relatable. Right away I was pulled into this story and I was surprised at how invested I was in these characters. There are some suspenseful moments where I was fearful for these women as they find themselves in some dangerous situations. Not just because they are women but because of their background as Asian American women. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to find out what happens next.
Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee is set in 1932 and from what I read in the sneak peak, was located in Chinatown. May, Gemma, and Peony's parents own a flower shop that is going through a hard time during a depression and their father is sick and in a sanitrorium. May and Gemma are trying to figure out how to make ends meet when they find Lulu Wong, friend of May and popular movie star, dead in a stable. They are afraid that the police will either ignore the murder because she is Chinese, or cover up the murder to save face, so they decide to take matter in their own hands to find Lulu's murderer.
Though this was just a sneak peak, I am intrigued by what I read. It starts a little slow as you get to know the setting and the characters, but it quickly picks up pace as the plot is introduced. The main characters that we saw the most of, May and Gemma, play off each other well. May, as the oldest in a Chinese family, is serious, a rule follower, and knows that it is her job to make sure her family is okay. Gemma, the middle child, is always coming up with half thought through, though well meaning, schemes to make more money for their family and rarely takes anything seriously. The way they each see the world is fundamentally different and I can tell even from the limited pages that I read that the differences in opinions they have are going to play a big part in how they investigate the murder of their friend. I really enjoyed this sneak peak and I am very much looking forward to reading the whole book soon!
I really enjoyed reading this sampler of Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee.
This is going to be a gripping historical mystery.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the full story!
Thank You NetGalley and Publisher for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
This was a fun sneak peek to “Kill her twice”.
The plot follows two sisters struggling to make ends meet and worrying about being married off by their parents.
On the way to sell their flowers they stumble upon a dead body, a famous actress no less. They are intrigued with the mystery surrounding her death.
At the beginning I wasn’t sure how I felt about the book, I do enjoy the sisters relationship and their back and forth conversation, but it was reading more like a historical fiction until the murder mystery part came into play which turned things around for me.
I also like the doctor who is introduced, he seems to have good deductive skills and I feel her may become useful in their investigations. This possibility makes me want to read the rest of the book.
Thank you to Stacey Lee, Penguin group and NetGalley for the EARC sample.

I really enjoyed this sampler of Kill Her Twice. Stacey Lee is such an incredible historical writer. She always includes distinctive details that bring the setting and time period to life. I enjoyed the relationship between the sisters and how they were always there for each other even when they disagreed. I’m curious to find out what happened to Lulu. I will definitely check out the full book!
Thank you to Stacey Lee, Penguin Group, and Netgalley for a free sampler in exchange for honest feedback.

Stars 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An interesting sample that made me want to check out the full book! I love the setting and time period.
Set in Los Angeles in 1932, this story follows three sisters, May, Gemma, and Peony who are reeling from the absence of their beloved Pa. Since their Pa was admitted into a hospital for being extremely ill it is now upon the three daughters to run the family floral business and earn money in order to live. They must overcome the persecution of being Chinese and living in Chinatown, which might be changed into a train station in the foreseeable future.
Overall rating 4 / 5
A hard life seems to be in store for the girls, either by marrying or working for the family business. Which is upended when May and Gemma stubble upon a movie star Lulu Wong brutally murdered. This rocks the two girls to the core but they are determined to make sure Lulu gets the just investigation she deserves no matter her race.
I was hooked into this time period and characters from the beginning. Stacy Lee writes so poetically and left me wanting more. I truly can’t wait to read the rest of this book. I want to see how the girls develop and grow throughout the story.
*Thank you to Stacy Lee, Netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group for the ARC Sneak Peek copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.
I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.
As this is a sneak peek I am a bit conflicted in how the author will continue on with the book (considering I only had access to 56 pages). Regardless, this book seems interesting enough for me to want to continue reading it. As I am still trying to wrap my head around the plot, I am going to share my few criticisms (which might be a part of the rest of the book, if I ever get access to it);
- This book seems too modern: From the beginning, we find out that the book is set around the 1930s, and yet I do not feel the author`s writing to be of the same value as the time period.
- I wish the book would turn toward the historical aspect of being Chinese-American during the 1930s, and tie it in with this supposed murder that happened as an indicator of the issues these individuals went through (as it is written in historical text). Chinese-Americans were undermined and excluded from being fully immersed in US-American society (especially in areas where this book takes place). I genuinely wish this book would take a gander at that. As I do not want to spoil anything for anyone, this point might seem a bit confusing.
- More details: certain moments in the book could have gone into detail while also cutting down on certain moments, which I feel to be fillers. If I am going to read a book, I would love to be able to fully understand the characters and their relationship to other characters, while seeing them all fleshed out.
Overall, this book is interesting and I am curious as to what will happen next. As this is a sneak peek, I will withhold from posting this review outside of Netgalley until I have managed to get my hands on the book.
The writing is lyrical and compelling. The beginning is mysterious and characters are mysterious too.
There are two sisters and they witness something unfortunate and horrible. There is a lot going on in a book. One sister shows no fear and the other one thinks rationally. The sisters are trying to solve the murder mystery and to get to the bottom of the mysterious death while there are many other things bothering people including the insights of Chinese culture and differences between weather and poor people.
Thanks to the publisher for providing the sample, I need this book now.
I NEED MORE, I NEED THE WHOLE BOOK!!
This was just the first 56 pages, and I read it in one sitting, I am addicted and the story is very captivating already, and I need to know what happened, who is evil who is nice, please can I get the full book??
Go and read this, and you'll be damned. (In a good way)
It's the 1930s in LA, and times are tough: May and Gemma are struggling to keep their family afloat while their father recovers from illness, a task made that much harder by the country's economic slump...and harder still when racism limits their opportunities. Then Lulu Wong, the shining star of Chinatown—who has found mainstream success—is found dead, perhaps murdered, and one thing is certain: the police cannot be trusted to handle this case on their own.
It's been a while since I read one of Lee's books, but if I remember correctly, this is true to form—rich in detail and bringing history to life. This isn't a time or place (LA generally, Chinatown more specifically) about which I know all that much, but I came out of these sample chapters thinking that Lee has done her homework. The plot moves pretty quickly, with a body discovered and a possible love interest introduced and a possible arranged marriage discussed before the end of the sample. I'm not entirely sure where all of this will go (although I can make a few educated guesses), but, well, I think we can safely say that I'm invested now.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing this sample through NetGalley.
This is a historical mystery set in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The year is 1932. Racism and prejudices play a big role in the story. A new railroad depot is also being proposed and if it goes through many residents will be out of a home and work.
This sample sets the scene well for what is to come. The writing style is easy to get into. The characters are interesting so far. In these sample pages I felt I learned something about the time period.
The sample ends leaving you wanting to read more.
So far this was very good and I found myself really getting into the book and wanting more, I can’t wait to read the full story.
The premise for this book seems to be really great. I like the dual POV.
It seems like it would be a black and white Hollywood mystery movie, I would love to read more of this as I felt like this will be really good.
Excited for the release to read more!
Ok! I’m intrigued now and I think I might need to pick up a copy so I can finish the story!! I’ve always loved books based in this time period so I had a feeling I might enjoy it!
What the hell do you mean by “sampler”?! I NEED MORE!
I can't believe I have to wait so many months to discover what happens next, but it’ll be worthy!
Thanks very much to the publishing house and NetGalley, but a taste is not enough!
