I thought this was very good and I will have to add this to the shop shelves. Thank you for the chance for us to review.
This was an enjoyable story with an intriguing premise. Millie has pretty good life. The only thing lacking is that she can't seem to fall in love with the right man. The man that she is in love with, unfortunately, is already married. Then something strange happens when she goes to her best friend's lakehouse for the weekend. When she enters the house she seems to have stumbled upon an alternate reality and Millie has the opportunity to explore what could have happened if she had made different choices in her life. She has the chance to see if the man she has been pining for is truly the one for her. Her journey of self-discovery was sweet and heartwarming.
The story was enjoyable with elements of love, friendship and heartbreak. An interesting and intriguing read!
I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
While I liked the overall premise - a sliding doors type situation, where certain decisions shape the course of one woman's life, but I wasn't all that taken with the way the story was told. The chopping and changing between lives left the pacing to be all over the place making everything just that bit too difficult to follow. The ending in particular is incredibly rushed, and I felt a lot is left unresolved.
That said, I liked the pining though, and the fact that Millie isn't perfect and knows it. She's judgemental, a little bit obsessed over Stephen (ie a lot) but she's also deeply loyal and caring about those she loves. And this is the story of her realising what and who is important in her life. It was certainly interesting enough for me to finish, although as I say it was a bit muddled in execution.
3.25 stars, rounded to 3. The book wasn't bad (and maybe it's just me) but the time jumping and all the different lives were so hard to follow lol. I also felt like the book was so predictable seeing her interactions with Ben at the start. It was clear they would end up together at some point. Otherwise, I loved the female friendship in this story and how important it was. Hands down the best part of the book. The author mentions taking inspiration from other books, like the midnight library. If you liked that book, you will also enjoy this one. Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the ARC of this book.
This book’s premise was interesting but ultimately lost me pretty quickly. I could not connect with any of the characters and the ending was so very predictable!
Loved this ground hog day type story of a woman trying to figure out her ideal life, trying different ones by passing through a magical port until she discovers her truth. I felt for her in her efforts , her exhaustion, and her happiness when she figured it out.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this book.
Oh wow!!!!! This was a first for me by this author but will not be my last! Such a good story! The characters worked so well together. Such great chemistry. Good love story!!
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book. I found this one a little bit confusing in places and I often had to jump back to remember who was narrating the chapters - due to that it took me a while to finish this book.
It was charming and sweet though, and really makes you think about what ifs.
I would probably rate is 3.5 (rounded up) and would recommend if you like this type of what if novel.
This book was the best surprise of my summer so far, I absolutely LOVED it! This is a big feat especially since I have historically not enjoyed any "alternate lives" books I've read recently (The Midnight Library, The Husbands), so I had kind of written off the genre, but this book changed my mind and I did not want to put it down. This is the "what if" first alternate reality book I have read that was not overly repetitive, depressing, and was always working within a cohesive, interesting, forward-moving plot and had a likeable main character! I appreciated the flashbacks alternating with the present day, and genuinely enjoyed Millie, and her relationships with each character. My only critique was that I wanted more at the end, but I think that is the sign of a fantastic read.
Thanks so much to Jofee Books, Netgalley, and the Author for the advanced e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A great concept, I really enjoyed following the main character as she explored different versions of her life in the multiverse. The ending did feel a bit rushed.
Thank you to netgalley and Joffe books for this ARC for an honest review.
I really wanted to enjoy this book and think it could have been a very interesting concept. I liked the general premise of the book and it made for a light beach read. However, the narration was too muddled at times for me and was confusing to keep up with what was happening which took me out of the book quite a lot.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5
This was a cute romance with magical realism that explored the several "what-ifs" of the FMC's life. It was a well thought out book and I was really invested in Millie's life. I liked the different timelines and how everything came together at the end.
Thank you C.J. Connolly and Joffe Books for this arc copy!
Well I didn't see any of this coming but I am indeed impressed, so Millie single Millie who always had a crush for the wrong guy finds herself in a path to discover that sometimes what we want and wish isn't what we truly need and I loved that, I love the seeing herself in other version only to realize that we can't control everything or choose what we want to be and who we want to love
I was intrigued by the multi-verse timeline of this story. I like seeing the idea of what changes would happen based off of small changes in our lives.
However, the execution wasn’t fully there for me. Some timelines I could have done without, while others had more potential.
An overall cute and expected ending.
Could not put it down!
I loved Millie. She was flawed, but real!
“Anything for time with Stephen. Even though I wish he wasn’t what I want.”
“To the version where we’re both incandescently happy.”
“It’s very easy to romanticize the idea of a relationship you tell yourself you want, but know will never happen. It’s a whole different ballgame to live the banal day-to-day of love with that operation.”
“The key to finding a good life is surely figuring out what I truly want.”
“My world falls away. I’m so in love with this man. How in all the worlds did I never fully realize this before?”
“Baby. Is that what he’ll call me? I love it.”
I'd give "The Love of Her Lives" by C.J. Connolly a solid 3.5 stars. This charming story dives into magical realism with Millie, who stumbles into alternate realities through a sliding door, exploring various "what ifs" in search of her perfect life. The plot toggles between past and present, adding depth and understanding to her journey.
The beginning is slow, but it picks up with whimsical and sometimes chaotic adventures. I appreciated that it didn't shy away from sad or tough situations. The ending felt rushed but fit the story's flow. Millie is relatable, though I wished more focus was on her relationship with Ben.
I have enjoyed each of three three "alternative universe" books by CJ Connolly. The first book is still my favourite, but I really enjoyed the idea of multiple options / lives for humanity. This was a less "heavy" book than the second publication, although there were some serious plot points handled with sensitivity by Connolly.
If you like this author, and the idea of parallel lives, and "Sliding Doors" type stories, I would certain recommend this book.
A cute romance! I loved the different timelines and I wasn’t sure how it would all play out. I’d like to read more from this author.
Thank you for the ARC! I loved this story, it was extremely well written. Will definitely be on the lookout for more books by this author!
