What a unique thriller!
I read a lot of thrillers and the plot lines can become monotonous as it feels like the same plot lines over and over, but this being a medical hacking thriller was completely different to anything I’ve ever read before and I absolutely loved it! I also have a background in the healthcare field, so this was a bit more “relatable” to me compared to other thrillers.
I thought the plot line was also very intriguing, because it is something that could definitely happen. With the majority (if not all) of healthcare practices using electronic health records, hackers interfering with patient care could become a true reality! It gives it an extra special spooky and creepy feeling.
I found that sometimes the main characters monologues could be a little long winded and not necessarily needed. One in particular that comes to mind is the main character driving to the beach (I believe it was) and he is talking about all of the different songs he is listening to and going back in his memories about his childhood. It felt a little long and drawn out, but that’s really the only criticism I feel I have for this book.
I will absolutely recommend this book to others and hope that Anthony Lee continues to write more thrillers as I am very anxious to read more from this author!
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC!
The first half of the story was intriguing what with the new appearance of a global pandemic in the form of a technological takeover by a notorious rogue gang of people. Truthfully, I found the plot very compelling and it was worth reading it to see the whole story on how the Doctor was gonna catch this gang but the story execution was lacklustre. I found the protagonist and his train of thoughts hardly tolerable and his constant criticism on others characters. The way he dealt with this whole ordeal despite being targeted personally and knowing how it can have such a huge impact on others as well, he somehow never consults the police or hell even a trusted friend or the investigators??!! I just find that hard to accept but I still tried to get past it thinking it’s a means to serve the plot, however it just kept getting worse. I’ve to admit the ending was alright although it didn’t match the anticipation I had when I first started the book. So, it did left me feeling a bit disappointed.
Overall, this was a fairly interesting (even it was only for a few chapters) which made me think of a situation in the future where a pandemic would strike again and wonder the outcome which gave me goosebumps yikes.
This book fell short for me. I love a good thriller that is based around medical type scenarios but this one just didn’t hit the mark. I found myself skimming thru a lot of it and it got to be too much detail of the medical aspect. Thank you as always for the chance to read this ARC NetGalley
Absolutely devoured this book! It is so good! The title is catching like a Rob Zombie flick. Th writing is amazing and makes you think twice.
I read and listened to the audio book of this book Doctor Lucifer. I really wanted to love the book I just found it a bit dry if I'm being honest. I also think that having a narrator vs the author reading would have been a better option it was very boring, and the author sounded very monotone. I think the parts of the story was enjoyable. There are also parts of the book I think that could've been left out. Unfortunately this book just wasn't for me.
Was this a medical textbook with instructions or a thriller? It felt like the first. Dry and boring and didn't capture me as a reader. Thank you to Netgalley for the digital arc in exchange for an honest review.
Doctor Lucifer by Anthony Lee was a good medical thriller. Fast paced with interesting characters, I enjoyed the project of this book. I did not enjoyed the flow of the social commentary/politics with the story because it destracted from the story. Overall, a high octane read with a great premise.
This was supposed to be a medical\technology mystery thriller. It was a great idea but the execution fell short. There was lots of explanations on the medical side and lots of musical references. The dialog was not good or believable nor were the interactions between the main character and the other characters.
Great idea. Poor execution. 2 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my honest review,
Thank you to Netgalley for the digital arc.
I must admit that it took me some time to finish this book. While the premise seemed promising, the lack of excitement made it a struggle to push through. The characters felt flat and the storyline could have been more concise without the excess information. As someone without any sort of background in medicine, the terminology used was often confusing.
The protagonist's self-centered and whiny demeanor grated on my nerves throughout the book. In the end, I couldn't shake the feeling that the narrative came across as a man explaining things in a condescending manner.
This book was awful! The dialogue between these so called professionals sounded very adolescent. The premise is interesting, a computer virus is allowing a hacker to interfere with patient files and wreak havoc, but just for our main character. The execution though is sorely lacking. Our main “hero” is attacked and two people die, but within two hours he’s out of the ER back to his car and he remarks what a thorough clean up job had been done. What? This is just one example of the ridiculous things in this book.
I ended up skimming near the end just to see how it wrapped up.
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would. I could not put it down and read it in one sitting. I would definitely recommend this book.

Knowing that the author self published his book makes me understand more of how the book was written. I feel like the book gave way too many details of certain scenes or explanations of medicine. I didn’t care for them which made me skim through certain paragraphs. It would seldom keep me entertained. Which took a bit longer for me to finish reading. Overall I liked the ending. Had me shocked to learn who Dr. Lucifer was.
This is Book 1 in the Dr. Mark Lin Series. Dr. Mark Lin was hacked & the hacker made it look like he was negligent in his care of 3 patients who died. The hacker is known as Dr. Lucifer. When Dr. Mark learns that Dr. Lucifer is threatening more people, he vows to get to the bottom of it and stop the hacker.
I enjoyed how rapid the story and tension ramped up.
The main character was relatable, and quite honestly I felt bad for him and his patients nearly the whole time.
I never would have guessed who the culprit was and the author had me guessing wrong quite a few times.
Not bad at all!
Unfortunately I did not finish this book. It was very difficult to get interested in it. The story was believable, this could really happen in life. I just felt like too much emphasis was put into the medical jargon. Things didn’t need to be explained to get to the point.
Interesting plot but the book was a slow read for me. I wanted to know more but at the same time, could find many reasons to put the book down and do something else. It’s about a cyber attack on a specific doctor leading to the patients receiving the wrong treatment. Dr. Lin must find out who it is before another patient dies. The book had potential but contained a lot of filler that left me wanting to skip over a few parts.
Medical thrillers are always exciting and this book had a great idea that lacked in execution. Cyber hacking is all over the news and this story about a doctor whose patient files are hacked had an interesting start. Dr. Mark Lin is an internist who works at Ivory Memorial Hospital in California. The hospital staff hears about a wide-spread computer attack and personnel are warned about not opening up suspicious emails. Then three of Dr Lin's patients receive the wrong medication, and it appears someone is changing his medical orders in the computer. After one patient dies and two others are badly hurt, the doctor starts receiving phone calls from someone calling himself Dr. Lucifer and saying he will destroy Dr. Lin's career. Can Dr. Lin find out who wants to harm him before anyone else dies?
The plot is good but the writing at times seems juvenile. After having patients die and become injured due to computer errors, Dr. Lin would have been required to take leave and he wouldn't be talking to the patient's families without meeting with the hospital legal department. Events such as a group of doctors "giggling" over a minor joke and constant talk about kicking people in the balls just seemed like teenage actions not those of an adult. Even after Dr. Lin is attacked and other people die in the hospital, he is never spoken to by hospital legal staff or forced to stay home. He also never notifies the legal department or the police about the phone calls he is receiving. The hospital IT department didn't seem overly concerned about the very big security breach nor did they notify the administrators.
The story also contained too much filler including endless lists of Spotify songs the doctor likes and too many descriptions of needless actions like sitting down, standing up etc. The ending was exciting and this could make a good novel with some update. Thank you to the author and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC to review.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this book.
Oh wow!!! I did not see that plot twist coming!!! This was a first for me by this author but will not be my last! Such a good story!
This medical thriller is an absolute page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The intricate plot weaves together high-stakes medical dilemmas, unexpected twists, and compelling characters, making it impossible to put down. The author masterfully blends medical background with thrilling suspense, creating a narrative that is both stimulating and emotionally gripping.
This book raises thought-provoking questions about ethics in medicine, the impact of advanced technology and hacking, and the lengths one will go to save lives. Fans of the genre will appreciate the meticulous attention to detail and the fast-paced, heart-pounding action.
If you’re looking for a thrilling read that combines medical intrigue with suspenseful storytelling, this book is a must-read.
This book was something that people have fears about amd if it's not something you think about after reading this you will. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others.
