This is part of the series, Brides of Chattan, and is the third installment of the series. Maggie had always dreamed of adventure with a handsome rogue, but she was forced to settle for a disastrous marriage. Now that she is widowed, she hopes to have freedom, but her matchmaking father has other ideas. Maggie refuses to give up her freedom, so she runs away from home and stows away on a pirate ship.
Being a pirate was never something that Bastian chose, but that is the only life he has known since his pirate father took him away from a home he loved, and forced him into the life of a pirate. When he discovers Maggie on board, he knows her fate would be to be thrown overboard and he decides to protect her by helping her disguise herself as a boy.
Their close proximity throughout the voyage and Bastian's urge to protect her ignite a fire between them that they neither can deny. But they need to keep their secret, and their distance, if they are to evade the navy and find the hidden treasure they are seeking, all in the midst of a brewing mutiny.
The characters are lovable and full of personality. The plot is lighthearted yet clever, with just the right mix of romance, humor, and adventure. I found this to be quite an entertaining and enjoyable read.

A super cute story. Don't let the cover fool you, this book is well written and enjoyable. Delighted!

A superb story for pirates and sea adventures lovers. The protagonists were fabulous, and the plot doesn't shy away from heavy topics. Rose Prendeville never disappoints.

This scratched my itch for a pirate romance. Unlike a lot of pirate romances, our hero Bash is more beta than alpha, sensitive and insightful. He's the navigator on board the ship that Maggie stows away on, as she's trying to escape yet another unwanted marriage. (Her first husband was an awful piece of work.)

Life on a pirate ship is terrible and difficult. Bash has barely left the ship since he boarded at nine years old, the bastard son of the captain. Bash protects Maggie by disguising her and has her pose as his cabin boy. Close proximity and sweetness prevail in this pirate love story!

If you like a pirate romance with the following elements, you'll probably want to check this one out:

*Virgin hero
*Stowaway FMC
*Disguised as a cabin boy
*Only one hammock

It's a cute romance that doesn't shy away from the (often disgusting) realities of pirate life.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

OMG, what a beautiful, sweet, entertaining book! It has all the intriguing vibes of Pirates of the Caribbean, the life at sea, the mad captain (but of the hateful type), the camaraderie between the pirates, but of course with much more angst. Maggie and Bash are a gorgeous couple of young people who had to grow way too fast and are perfectly suited to heal each other’s wounds. I loved Prenderville’s previous book, but I found this one even better. The lovemaking scenes are tender, very emotional and passionate and the love that grows between the main characters is palpable. The handful of side characters are gorgeously handled as well. This author is very, very talented and very careful with her researches (I loved the author’s notes about piracy!) and I really look forward to reading more by her.

An adventurous yet lighthearted romance between the son of a pirate and runaway widow.

I absolutely adored Bastian and Maggie and their budding romance. I loved Bastian's protectiveness over Maggie as well as Maggie's stubbornness towards being told what to do no matter how handsome the man the demands came from. I'm a sucker for the phrase "good girl," and the use of it from Bastian had me falling for him quickly.

I will admit there were parts of the story that lagged and felt slow, but either way, I was still engrossed in the story and wanted to continue on and see how it ended. Prendeville not only writes great main characters; she also adds personality to her secondary characters, which makes you want to know more about them and their choices. I, for one, wouldn't mind a story about Langley or even Constantin and Ryna. I eagerly await more from Prendeville and can't wait to see what writes next.

When Maggie Budge nee Mackintosh learns that her father has chosen another husband for her, now that her year of mourning is over, Maggie decides that one husband was more than enough and bolts. She stows away on a ship in the harbor and plans to start a new life, wherever the ship takes her. But things go bad quickly as she is seasick and severely dehydrated when she is found by Sebastian “Bash” MacLeod, the captain’s son and boatswain/sailing master of the Pirate ship, Auldfarrand’s Revenge. Bash hides her in plain sight and plans to send her back to Scotland as soon as they make landfall, but until they do, Maggie is introduced to the crew as a young boy, Magnus and has her act as his cabin boy. Maggie actually takes well to life on the sea, and soon finds herself falling hard for Sebastian. But there are things she doesn’t know and when the captain’s quest to find his lost treasure almost costs Bash his life, Maggie wants nothing more than to return home, with Bash by her side. Unfortunately, Bash is practically a prisoner on the ship and doesn’t believe he is worthy of Maggie’s love. What will it take for these two to find their HEA?

Born to a Jamaican woman who sadly passed away not long after arriving in Scotland to find Bash’s father, he spent the first nine years of his life being passed from family to family until his father, Cornelius “Mad” MacLeod takes him on his ship and refuses to let him leave. When he meets Maggie it is practically love at first sight for him. He will do anything to protect her, including taking a beating for her and saving her from the other crew members, by letting them think what they will about him. He would love nothing more than to leave the ship and start a life with her, but with his crazy father on a quest for his lost gold and a navy captain hot on their heels, happy ever after seems impossible. Even if he could leave the ship, he has nothing to offer her and that will never do! It will take a miracle to give him the life he has always dreamed of with Maggie, and Bash has never been that lucky. When all seems lost, a miracle comes in the most amazing way possible, proving sometimes good things happen to good people!

This was a very good story with incredibly likable characters, Sebastian especially. This is not your typical HR read, but it is a very good read nonetheless. I did think the story lagged in places, but overall, it held my attention and really drew me into the story. The book has secrets, danger, great secondary characters, buried treasure, pirates, steamyish love scenes (with a virgin hero!), friendships, life or death moments, reunions, and finally a very sweet ending complete with an epilogue featuring cameos from characters from the previous books. I would happily recommend this book to HR readers, especially those who like a good pirate story!

4.5 stars, rounded up.

Such a fresh and light romance between stowaway Maggie and Bastian, the captain's son who is hostage on a failing pirate ship. Once again author Rose straddles the line between the reality of life in the early 18th century and the sheer romance and adventure that could be had. This is the third in the Brides of Chattan series, so we meet Jory and Ellen again, but it's a standalone. The cover tells us it will be lighthearted - and it is, but it has an authentic core with real issues and honour and found family and so much character growth. Rose has incorporated historic events among her imaginings but she draws a veil over the horror and filth and brutality that would’ve characterized a pirate's real life.

Maggie is a young and brave widow who defies her father by running and then stowing away on a pirate ship. She has an otherworldliness about her that makes this seem possible. It also makes her able to cope with all that goes on - the hunger, the stench, the filth, the crowdedness, the crew... and that's just for starters! Young sailor Bastian (Bash) is just delightful - even as he's trapped on the ship, he still has a goodness and intelligence that saves Maggie, and also makes him a perfect partner for her. His inherent kindness shines again and again in their adventures as time passes on the ship – and as they fall for each other in the most delightful way.

This whole story is a rollicking adventure and would almost work for YA readers, even though there's a little bit of steam 🌶️. It's tender and full of consent and caretaking. Let's say they learn all the things together 😉

Rose has also had the most fun with language. She keeps us present on the ship with the language of the pirates, and the Scots' accents, but she also manages to incorporate current idiom in a way that seems natural and so clever: "It consumed her even now, though their lives were, if not quite in moral peril yet, then certainly peril adjacent".

I loved the healing of Bash’s ear - it evidently was possible, but I’m quite sure it would've been agony for Bash. This romance is so delightful - basically I loved it all - how Maggie and Bash lurch from one adventure to another on a God-forsaken pirate ship with a mad captain and a doomed crew.

Thank you Net Galley, Rose Prendeville and Eridani Press for the ARC. Opinions are my own.

Maggie and the Pirate’s Son by Rose Prendeville
Brides of Chattan #3

Another wonderful story in an delightful series ~ Maggie & Bash were perfect for and with one another.

What I liked:
* Maggie: dutiful daughter, romantic dreamer before marriage, disillusioned by marriage, wants nothing more to do with men, runs away, ends up on a Pirate ship…oh my
* Bash: son of a pirate, lived most of his life on a pirate ship, survived abuse and life at sea, bright, compassionate, navigator of seas and of life
* That Bash protected Maggie and others on his ship
* The attraction between Maggie and Bash and the way it slowly became more
* That both Maggie and Bash were survivors of difficult pasts
* Dutch: quartermaster on the pirate ship, a bit of a father figure to Bash
* The trustworthy members of the pirate ship that looked up to Bash: Langston, Duffy, and Samson
* The growth not only of friendship and love but admiration, respect, and inner strength exhibited by Bash and Maggie as they openly and honestly communicated with one another
* That I could see the two main characters having a loving and fulfilling life together
* The plot, pacing, setting, writing and feel of the book – felt I was there and cared about the outcome – a bit of a fairytale feel but what a nice feel it was
* Constantin: English Naval Captain that provided more than one surprise
* Custard the cat and the rescued kestrel
* The medical controversy and how it was resolved
* The conclusion with all the mysteries solved and bad guys dealt with

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The painful times both main characters endured

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely

Thank you to NetGalley and Eridani Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion...

I never thought of myself as a pirate story fan (sea-sickness, hard tack, unbathed men, storms, weevil-infested food, mutiny, etc - none of it seems very romantic). But I have actually rather enjoyed several of the ones I read. Likewise this one. Maggie, widowed after a rather disappointing marriage, is facing a future of being married off again by her father. Rather than face another disappointing match, she makes a mad, impulsive decision one night, seeing a ship anchored nearby, and sneaks aboard, running away, in the hopes of some kind of adventure. A rather desperate bid for something better than what her father has planned for her.

Bastian MacLeod never chose the life of a pirate, but was stolen away from the home he knew and loved by his pirate father as a youth and forced to live the pirate life since, escaping capture by the navy and living in fear of his volatile, vindictive father, the captain of the pirate ship. When they discover the stowaway, Bastian makes the decision to protect Maggie, under the guise of being a boy, and continues to look out for her during their time at sea, until he can make it to port and secure a safe passage back to Scotland.

Maggie gets her pirate adventure at sea, and Bastian finds himself falling for the adventuresome, feisty woman, while being constantly fearful of the others discovering her ruse, as well as his father's next mad scheme. As they work to evade capture by the navy, while seeking a hidden treasure, the pirates are on the edge of mutiny and Bastian is caught in the middle. He knows that the life of a pirate does not end well, and despite his growing feelings for Maggie, feels he has nothing to offer her, except safe passage home, and safety.

This is a wonderful pirate adventure story, with hidden identities, but also two people who are fighting to be their true selves despite others trying to exert their wills on Bastian and Maggie. It is also a sad story of how parents fail their children and sometimes the family that people that people choose to surround themselves with maybe better than the family they were given at birth. Despite the fear of punishment, mutiny, or death by the noose - this does end in a happily ever after - at least for some of the characters. I especially loved the epilogue.
