The title of this book doesn't do it justice. There is so much good information here that can really help people live better.
This was a well-thought out, logical, and highly informative book on the outdated and just plain wrong information that we are still being presented by our primary-care physicians. I have read books by other physicians that touched on these lies and medical issues, but by far this book had the most thorough explanations. I truly appreciated it because I want to know HOW things happen in the body.
I and my husband have taken control of our health and have changed our habits to increase our healthspan. We haven't hit our target weights yet, but we are well on our way. We definitely have improved our health immensely. We were told by a biologist friend that you can't change your habits and to just take a statin. We both emphatically and simultaneously said we have changed our lives, we did it. It CAN be done ESPECIALLY when there are books like this available.
When I read a book such as this on medicine, I do internet searches to back up the assertions I am reading and invariably spend a lot of time in the online NIH library. It's pretty interesting to find how much information there is that you don't get from your primary care physician. I definitely am one who has gotten harmful information in the past and I am very thankful for physicians like Dr. Lufkin who will speak out on the current science about major diseases and treatments.
I found the author's humble references to his own medical struggles to be very humanizing. Finally, a doctor who will admit that he has struggled with the same issues that most people do!
I heartily recommend this book. I am going to buy the Kindle version of this so I can re-read it and so my husband can read it. I'm also going to recommend this to the wife of our scientist friend as she is a retired nurse and open to new information.
Thank you to the author Dr. Robert Lufkin, MD, publisher BenBella Books, and NetGalley for providing me with a pre-publication E-galley of this book. I didn't receive anything for this review and my opinions are always my own.
I was really enjoying the book but it expired before I could finish it to publicly review it. Please consider offering kindle review copies in the future so reviewers can still review books after the publication date. What I read was excellent and I would have liked to recommend it to my readers.
This book is an excellent resource to use to better our overall health. He explained how he was slightly overweight. He has high blood pressure and was prediabetic. He shared how he knew he had to make a change. He started to avoid sugar, processed carbs and seed oils, and grains. He made a choice to skip breakfast and lunch. He was able to get off some of his medications. In the book, he explored the lies that he was taught in medical school. One of these was being about obesity and how a calorie is just a calorie. The most eye-opening chapters was about the plan. He stated how we can be healthy if we choose just when eat. He suggested eating only within an 8-hour time frame. This allows your body time to rest and help change your metabolic health. He also included tips on sleeping better and practicing relaxing techniques. He looked at brain exercise you can do to improve your brain. He encouraged readers to get regular exercise and tracking down how much you do. He shared how we can learn to manage our stress. When we are a pet owner it has been linked to longer health and can teach us unconditional love.
I would recommend this awesome book on all the lies he taught in medical school and how he covered diabetes, fatty liver, hypertension, cancer, Alzheimer, and much more. It was very well researched and he shared studies and how things have changed in the medical field. The plan was very helpful in reversing and helping to prevent some of these diseases. I liked how he opened up about he made his own lifestyle changes to improve his health. What I noticed that was interesting is how actor, Josh Duhamel endorsed this book.
“I received this book free from BenBella Books for my honest review.”
This was a very interesting read! It took me a while to get through this book, because I tend to verify the sources when authors make a lot of health and science-related affirmations, but everything I verified (bear in mind, I did not read every single reference the author provides at the end of the book - just the ones relevant to parts I was most interested in) checked out, and helped me get a better understanding of the science behind sugar consumption and weight loss. Some of the later chapters were - and the author even acknowledges it in the text - a little dry or less interesting for someone less passionate about medicine, and I admit I skipped a few of those pages. The author's affirmation that keto is a realistic diet to follow forever bothered me just a little bit, as it seemed to be his "cure-all" solution for all the ailments he described. However, I learned a lot, and an left with a greater interest in nutrition science and health recommendations. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book!
Dr. Lufkin's narrative extends beyond critique, advocating for a paradigm shift in the perception of health and disease. By merging courage and clarity, the book implores a reevaluation of outdated medical norms and urges embracing a holistic approach to well-being. Through practical lifestyle guidance encompassing nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress management, readers are empowered to combat the root causes of chronic diseases. "Lies I Taught in Medical School" emerges as a beacon of empowerment, urging individuals to seize control of their health journey proactively, before it's too late. This book would be easily understood by medical professionals and the layperson. Through twelve detailed chapters, Dr. Lufkin not only recounts his personal triumph over four chronic diseases but also equips readers with actionable steps to identify risk factors, enhance mental well-being, optimize diet and metabolism, and manage prevalent conditions like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension without unnecessary medications.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
Where has this book been my whole life? Ok, what matters is that this book is here now.
I have spent the last few days thinking about it, trying to come up with a way to label it. Trying to come up with a way to tell others what it is. Because, you know, every time you try to talk about THIS KIND OF BOOKS, someone will quickly dismiss it and call it yet another conspiracy, or alternative something, or whatnot. I kind of understand that because *most* of the books like that indeed are that. But then, there are rare gems like this one. Where a doctor – who still believes in science – spells it out that not all scientific facts hold true as science evolves. And points out what exactly are the wrong truths that most still believe in.
At this time I feel like this is one of the best science books that debunks bad science. And it is focused on medicine. On healthcare. and it also is extremely well-written. Yet, despite it being well-written, I’d suggest you have at least some medical background/knowledge – or at least extra biology or pharmacology knowledge. I’m afraid for most with only basic school level knowledge this might be a bit too Greek for them. Or, it might be the beginning of a new journey where they decide to learn something new.
Either way. Did I say this book was awesome? It was awesome.
This is one of those books that make me so happy and so grateful that I’ve had a chance to read it.
It’s not exactly a quick and easy read, and it cannot and should not be read in one sitting. But if this “science debunking science” is your jam, you will love it.
The book was well laid out and made a good case for taking control of one's own health. It covered the most illnesses plaguing the current generations and provided steps to counteract these.
This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to take control of their health.
As someone with a medical background, I am truly impressed with this book. The explanations are clear, making it accessible and easy to understand for most readers.
"Lies I Taught in Medical School" is an eye-opener! Dr. Lufkin thoroughly explains how modern medicine has often missed the mark, particularly by failing to recognize that chronic diseases share common root causes that the medical system largely overlooks (or misunderstands).
This is a brave attempt: calling for a significant shift in how we approach health and disease. His critique of traditional medical practices, particularly chronic diseases, is enlightening and empowering, inspiring readers to question and rethink established norms. I only hoped there was a chapter on thyroid-related diseases as well, as we see that a lot in our practice.
I appreciate that Dr. Lufkin offers practical advice on how lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress management can effectively target the underlying causes of chronic diseases.
This book explores the conventional causes of and approaches to dealing with many common modern-day health issues. By examining medical issues and conventions from multiple angles author Dr. Robert Lukfin provokes the reader to critically reflect on what they believe to be true about key health matters. What are the roles of nitric oxide and uric acid in hypertension? How can Dr. Otto Warburg and the UK's Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer increase our understanding of the disease beyond what the pharmaceutical companies lead us to believe? What do statins do to LP(a)? These are questions that get explored and answered in Lies I taught in Medical School.
There are other important points to ponder was well. What is relative risk reduction and how is it used to possibly skew medical studies? Is it possible to slow the progression of Alzheimer's Disease? What is the mTOR signaling pathway and how is it relevant to health and longevity?
The book is well written and laid out well for all types of readers, regardless of background or medical knowledge. This book concisely addresses metabolic health and its role in physical and mental illness. It is not only educational, it's empowering. To quote Francis Bacon: "Knowledge itself is power." Best of all, you don't need to agree with all of the advice at book's end to appreciate it and benefit from it!
As someone who has been working for decades to deal with my own health issues, I was excited to read this. However, I was disappointed. the main thesis seems to be that doctors use medicine instead of more natural methods to treat patients' health, but I have not found that at all. Even with a history of genetic conditions, every new doctor ignores my history and demands I start from scratch and prove again and again and again that diet and exercise don't fix everything.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
Science is constantly evolving as we learn new things through the years. Some of the lies we've been taught were unintentional, while others were blatantly intentional but done in the name of greed. The author takes several of the 'truths' we were taught to believe in our school health classes and breaks down why we know these are no longer true, even though many are still being taught today. There are points that are oversimplified, but that makes it a good read for the layperson who just needs to know how these affect him and his health.
This was a 3.5 rounded up. This book was an interesting read. I appreciate the authors take on current health models and how they are not helping people. I whole heartedly agree. I think some parts are too over generalized or over simplified but I appreciate push back on western medicine being the only acceptable or proven model of care. Thank you for this ARC opportunity
I've been on a journey of health, and I know that some of the things we have been told over the years are either bad science, or just simply not true because we now know what is healthy for us and what isn't. It's refreshing to see a doctor own up to the fact that not only were they taught the wrong things, but they turned around and taught others the wrong things as well. It's a hard pill to swallow, to know you duped so many people, but when we know better, we do better, right? I admire Robert Lufkin for admitting this and trying to correct this via his book. Lufkin goes into detail regarding each "lie" he's ever told, all relating to chronic disease and health disorders that we have long believed were either untreatable or only fixed with medication, which is simply not true. Lufkin himself has reversed four chronic illnesses, and this gives great hope to the rest of us. He discusses what factors influence chronic diseases, such as stress, sleep, diet, exercise and so much more. The author provides illustrations and references, which debunks these outdated myths about our health that many people still believe. There are so many misconceptions about our health, and Lufkin does a great job setting the record straight while offering practical advice and guidance. This book reminded me a lot of Lies My Doctor Told Me by Ken Berry and Lufkin does recommend this book as well. Great minds think alike! This book was incredibly eye opening and empowering. We can take charge of our health and heal, and this book is the first step in doing so!
Thank you to NetGalley, Robert Lufkin, and BenBella Books for the ARC of this book.
