What a fabulously funny, and heart warming book this is!!
I’ve laughed so much at the humour in this book, and thoroughly loved the ‘banter’ between Frank and Moira that I’ve absolutely loved following this story…. and after finishing it, I feel so completely satisfied and fulfilled.
Every character in this story is perfectly written for the part they play and just fit so well together! This is my first book by this author and I’d definitely read more books by her!
Oof, I dnf’d this a third in. The main character Moira is just too judgemental for me to care about her. She comes across as someone who thinks she’s better than anyone else and when she meets her match, she’s somehow offended by that very same behaviour.
The writing is a lot of telling-not-showing which I don’t find engaging enough. This just wasn’t for me at all.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read this before its release.
I breezed through this book—perfect for a quick, easy read with plenty of spice and drama, making it a great summer pick. The overall plot gave me "Mother of the Bride" vibes from Netflix, though it's not exactly the same. The title "Second Chance Romance" feels more fitting for that storyline, but interpretations may vary. I enjoyed the light tone and Moira's unfiltered humor, which brought some laughs, though I found the plot a bit flat and didn't fully connect with the other characters. If you're after a light, easy read, this could be worth adding to your list.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for letting me read this before its publication.
I read this very quickly, so it is a good book to pick up and fly through if you're looking for an easy read. There is spice, drama and all the ingredients for an easy summer read.
The overall plot reminder me of the Mother of the Bride movie on Netflix, not exactly the same but you got a similar vibe from it. I feel the title of Second Chance Romance is probably more suited to the Mother of the Bride storyline instead of this one, but people probably have different understandings of what that second chance could be.
I found the tone of voice nice and light and liked Moira's attitude, she was what you get and her unfiltered thoughts and comments made me laugh. The overall dialogoue and style of writing is what really carried the story, as I didn't really connect with the other characters and found the plot a little flat sometimes.
If you're looking for a very easy read, then this could be one to add to the list.
Disliked mom. Dislike dad. Disliked their plotting to hurt their children. The movie was better. It’s on.Netflix.
MAJOR SIGH.
This book was not at all what I was anticipating. It follows a women who is deciding if she should leave her cheating/gaslighting husband but at the same time is hooking up with her daughter fiancee's dad. First, Frank was just miserable and had no appeal at all until the end of the book. I don't even consider it enemies, I consider him boring and miserable and unlikable to everyone. And, the fact that now we have possible step-siblings dating because their parents are together...just weird to me. The biggest reason for the 1 star is the plot and characters. I found the writing wasn't horrible and would be open to read more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I personally felt like the title of this book was misleading. I was expecting more literally a "second chance" romance, where Moira would be giving her estranged husband another chance. That he was going to fight for her. Instead her ex, Rupert, came across as such a wet fish. I also wish it would have been more clear that there was going to be multiple instances of cheating tropes. That is a major ick and especially within something as delicate as a second chance romance trope involving marriage, that felt like a really poor "out" for Moira to just be "falling" in love with a stranger after 6 weeks while still in her marriage.
Harriet felt like she was barely in the story, her character was so flat and came across as immature and boy-crazy, even though as a university student in her twenties should have been much more well rounded and interesting. Her sickness in Greece that unravelled the whole plot also just felt very convenient and uninspired.
Not a single one of the characters felt unique or relatable and the banter was seriously lacking any conviction.
However, I did enjoy the dialogue. Not necessarily the content of it all the time, but overall it was done well. It was the flow of the dialogue that led the plot entirely and without it the story wouldn't have made sense. The basic idea was very intriguing but the execution was lacking. I also feel strongly that the title should have been changed. The events were not well reflected by calling it Second Chance Romance.
Absolutely hilarious from the very first page. Had me laughing my head off, and don't get me started on the banter it had me howling.
"Second Chance Romance" by Carol Mason is a heartwarming tale of rediscovery and love. The novel follows characters who are given a new opportunity to mend past relationships and embrace second chances in love. Mason’s writing is both poignant and uplifting, capturing the nuances of rekindling romance and personal growth. With well-developed characters and a storyline full of emotional depth and hope, this book is a compelling read for fans of heartfelt and inspiring romance.
Cute & quick read! I love when someone finds their strength to be the best they can be and just believe in their heart. I love the romance and the laughs. It also has a great mother/daughter, father/son story that adds a great piece into the book as well.
I really really loved this book. And I absolutely loved Moira's development from jaded wife - running away from her problems - to hopelessly in love. That once you peel back the layers of hurt the real Moira is inside. The Santorini and Cali backdrop to the story created some beautiful imagery, and it is so well described that you feel like you're there. Love love loved it.
I really wanted to love this book as I love a good older FMC, because I'm *cough* old. However, I feel like there was too much ambiguity around who cheats first and I'm not really into that. However there was an interesting use of 'not quite' open door spice - almost like - entry level open door for readers who are looking to give open door spice a go. Mind you, Frank is a dick. I just couldn't get past that. I would still like to read more from this author!
Big thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Carol Mason for a copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion
2.5 stars | A cute and quick summer read, but didn't resonate with me. The MMC was very mean just for the sake of being grumpy or whatsoever. And while I appreciated the older protagonists perspective, they're hard to connect with. The romance felt force because of their lack of empathy and poor communication.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book and provide an honest review.
I wanted to love this book as the club interested me but sadly I didn’t click with the characters. Although I enjoyed the ending I didn’t find myself excited to keep picking up this book so it took me a long time to get through it.
Well everyone, this one came out July 22, 2024, and it was okay. I've never read anything by Carol Mason before and I wasn't hugely impressed. I got through it and there were parts that definitely had me hooked, but not the best romance I've read. I give it a 4-star review because while it was tough for me to get through at times, it was a decent read.
We meet Moira Fitzgerald who is on holiday in the US with her daughter Harriett. Moira has found out that her husband might have been cheating on her and then her daughter meets a boy that she falls madly in love with. Moira meets Aiden's (Harriet's boyfriend) father and their relationship is...unique. One of the things I disliked is how negative the whole relationship scene was in this book; however, I enjoyed some of the banter between the characters.
It felt a bit angsty to be an adult fiction novel, which isn't always bad, but it didn't work the best. Mason's descriptions of setting and characters was very good, however.
You may want to try it out for yourself because I'm feeling like a harsh critic on this one. Let me know what your thoughts are!

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, and the banter and bickering between the main characters was so entertaining. I love books set in other countries, and Greece was the perfect setting for this book.
This was a super quick, easy read that's so fun for summer, and I'm looking forward to checking out this author's other books!
I really really loved this book, the story, and the writing, and it would have been 5 stars if not for the following 3 things;
There was a lot of mention of cheating, so much so that it almost felt as if every person ever had been cheated on or cheated. I think, or definitely hope, that that's not realistic, which kind of felt weird to me.
As some other reviews might have written, there is a case of sexual harrasment mentioned, which was a false accusation. While it certainly happens, im sure, it feels a bit inconsiderate of the many cases in real life where accusers aren't believed when they should be.
The story starts with two parents scheming together because they dont want their kids to get married/have a relationship at all. While i get the idea of the story and i loved how the story turned out, it felt so weird to me that parents of 19 and 22 year olds would say "oh youre too young to be in love". I was a bit annoyed by especially moira, the fmc, and how she treated her 19 year old daughter.
Now i am done complaining. The writing is really good, the story overall ended up being really nice. I love the greece part, and their many deep conversations. I like the main relationship a lot, it feels so genuine.
Thank you to netgalley and the author for sending me the book in exchange for an honest review
Cutest enemies to friends story. The parents of a very young couple who have “fallen in Love” much to the horror of their respective parents decide they must find a way to break them up before they rush off an elope. Bickering back and forth at each other while trying to devise a plan creates enough tension to spark something between them. It all comes between a scorned woman and a man with a closed heart. A very engaging story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is an unusual romance because the couple meets through their college aged children, who are dating. It’s great to read about falling in love again when you’re presumably older and wiser. If you’re looking for a deeper relationship story then you’ll enjoy this book.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley, I receivex a complimentary e-ARC of this book.
I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting!! I highly recommend this book! Grab your beach bag and head to the beach you will finish this and won’t be disappointed!
