Rebel Bakes is a fun book full of unique treats. It has a causal approach with everyday conversational dialogue. The writings feel personal, like you’re together in person just talking about baking in your own kitchen. Lots of tips and experienced tricks along the way. This book will definitely hit the spot for those with a sweet tooth! Directions are easy to follow, and the ingredients are not hard to obtain, plus measurements are provided in both forms so it easily applies to all readers, regardless of location.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
What a fun book! I'll have to add this one to my collection. It's fun, great tips, and unusual. I didn't even know about George before receiving the book, and I'm so glad I did. I don't know if I'm capable of making many of them, but at the very, very least I've found some bakes I can gift.
Add this to your cookbook collection. I think you'll love it.
Thank you to Hachette Book Group and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is a beautiful cook book. The photos are really fun and bright, love the graphic design. The recipes are a little much for me, I prefer more subtle desserts, but the presentation is absolutely gorgeous. Would be a fun addition to a shelf, I just may not reach for it often for actual use.
Rebel Bakes is a wonderfully irreverent, very high energy, and beautifully exuberant book of baked cakes and goodies by George Hepher. Due out (outside the UK) 11th June 2024 from Hachette on their Greenfinch imprint, it's 224 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
The author is very chatty and the writing is happy and *fun*. The non-recipe parts feel like a conversation with a good pal (over cocktails) who really knows about and is enthusiastic (in a good way) about something. He has learned or developed competency with the techniques and the recipes included in the volume are impressive, showy, and colorful. Very high wow factor.
This is not an understated gran-approved repertoire. There are loads of chocolate laden treats, rainbow stuff, cheesecake variations and the glazes, sauces, and caramels to go along with them.
The actual book is logically arranged: an intro covering the basics (he has a lot of good info here, don't skip it), basics (caramels, sauces, drips), tray bakes, melt & pour type creations (he calls them Hob Jobs which made me snort), cookies & tarts, after dinner treats, and cakes (lots of *spectacular* very tall cakes here). Recipes are written with a fun description and often a background origin, ingredients in a bullet list, and step by step directions. Ingredient measures are given in standard metric with imperial (American) measurements by weight in parentheses.
The photos are a standout of the collection. The author is a social media celebrity and -all- the items are beautifully styled and all have a lot of wow-factor. Instagram perfect in other words. Spelling and vernacular are British English throughout, but won't pose a problem in context for readers living elsewhere.
It shouldn't need to be specifically stated out loud, but here we are. The book is campy, fun, inclusive, and LGBTQIA+ friendly.
Five stars. It would be a great selection for public library acquisition, home use, or gift giving.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
Wow! Wow, wow, wow!! This cookbook is my new favorite. The photos are amazing and the recipes are divine! There are delicious, modern combos of flavors and classics as well. I look forward to trying out these recipes and displaying this book on my shelf. If you love sweets please get this book. You won’t be disappointed one bit!
This is a baking book that will make you a more versatile baker AND make you laugh at the same time. George of George’s Bakery is very funny, and he has made a name for himself in the world of baking with his unique and tasty treats. Be prepared to get cornflour, vanilla bean paste and caster sugar. If you have a taste for caramel as well as fruit desserts, this book will be your jam (get it?)! It even contains an edible cookie dough recipe, which is one of my favorite things in the world.
Now to go look up “digestives” and the closest American equivalent…
Thank you to NetGalley and Mobius for the advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
