A well-written, beautifully illustrated graphic novel that’s also educational and gripping to read? Yup, this book is it. Perfect, it’s absolutely perfect to get younger readers into learning more about nature and into getting them hooked on reading.
Do you know an elementary schooler who's into earth science? Who's also maybe a reluctant reader? Then do I have the book for you! The Case of the Forest Fingers is an edutainment manhwa for the grades three-five set, and it does a very nice job of mixing creepy mystery with plenty of good scientific information for the age group. This volume primarily tackles molds and fungi, both of which are easily observed in the wild (even if you live in a city) and can be gateways to a broader interest in science. In between chapters are some very thorough informational sections, and the book also features interactive elements with an answer key in the back. I can't see it appealing to anyone older than the target audience, but for the right age group, this could be a real winner.
This is a cute book in the early comic book tradition. It is about 3 friends and a cat who make up the Mystery Science Detectives. They are like mini Ghost Hunters and try to prove or disprove supernatural events. I really hope the author continues with this series as it is very informative as well as entertaining.
I received an electronic ARC from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
The creators spun a story that has enough adventure and creepiness to hold elementary level readers. Three classmates have created a Mystery Detectives club and work to solve cases for others. These have been minor until another student walks in and shares his story of losing his special baseball in the forest. This forest has a reputation for being haunted and this boy's story backs that up. The team heads out to explore and figure out what happened and where the ball is. They encounter creepy/spooky things and are able to figure out what each is. The artwork is highly detailed and offers hints for readers to discover. I love that the authors slip in science lessons between some of the chapters. Looking forward to more in this series.
This was a combination of educational and a cute story. It teaches kids about science through an engaging and fun graphic novel. Even as an adult I found it cute, although some of the activities in the book are definitely for kids it was still a fun enjoyable read and I hope this turns into a series.
Ok they did this book very neat, where they have a story about some kids that go out in the world to debunk things people think are supernatural. One thing I really loved about this story is that one kid keeps a journal that has real life facts in it so that the reader can learn about what they are investigating and it even has real pictures of them. This would definitely be a great book for kids learning about nature in a fun way.
