"Connilyn Cossette never disappoints with her historical works.
Her books are always teeming with adventure, biblical history, and a strong dose of faith. Her current novel, Shield of the Mighty, has all the listed attributes necessary to make the time spent reading worth it.
Set in the year 1040 BC (during the time of King Saul, the first king of Israel), Shield of the Mighty tells the story of Zevi, the adopted son of Natan and Shoshana.
Having read the author’s Covenant House book series, it was a delight to discover the continuation of the young Zevi’s story. Zevi, now grown, is a captain in King Saul’s army who has been tasked to gather recruits and skilled people for the king. His quest to fulfil this order takes him back to his hometown, Maresha, a place full of childhood pain and loss. A ray of light shines in this dark place for Zevi in the form of Yochana, a young widow whose encounter with Zevi changes from fascination to hostility and eventually love.
A hasty decision finds Yochana taken from her home and on a journey with a man haunted by the past and a missing cousin. Zevi and Yochana’s journey will lead them through betrayal, love, faith and discovery of God’s vengeance. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and was very excited to read about past characters like Natan and Shoshana.
Fans of Connilyn Cossette, what are you waiting for? Grab this book. As usual, you will not be disappointed. For new readers of this author, I recommend you start a new adventure with this author. You are assured of a beautiful reading journey.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my mountain where I seek refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2
I enjoy reading Biblical fiction as I feel the stories I’ve read and heard come alive.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I clung to each and every word. She skillfully unravels each character revealing their past, their trauma, and their relationship with God. She weaves these threads into one tragically beautiful and powerful story of love, redemption, forgiveness, and restoration.
She leaves no detail out about ancient Israeli history, which shows her dedication to research. The battle scenes, the descriptions of the geography, and the way each character interacted with each other is masterful.
I received an advance copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.

I enjoyed Voice of the Ancient when I read it in 2023, and I knew I wanted to continue the series. Yet, when I received Shield of the Mighty for review, I ended up putting it off. The biggest reason is that books involving a mystery component can allow the plot to overcome the relationships. I don't like it when that happens. I end up enjoying the book less than I want to. I wasn't sure if the mystery part of Shield of the Mighty would overtake the character building, but I worried it would. I needn't have worried--in this case.
Zevi had an even more interesting backstory than Avi from the previous book. Yet, Zevi's adoptive father and mother have their own books in a prequel series, The Covenant House. (I haven't read the prequel series.) So it would make sense that Zevi's background would feel more fleshed out than Avi's. Zevi has grown up with a desire to become a warrior. He has a vendetta against the Philistines for capturing him as a young boy and murdering his family. Now a captain in King Saul's army, Zevi needs to recruit others to service. Yet he's finding that not everyone in Israel supports Saul or believes in his divine appointment.
Yochana is a grieving young widow. Her husband was killed already in a prior battle following King Saul. She is actually supporting those plotting against Saul. But when she meets Zevi, she has no idea that her life is about to change. Zevi can't explain why he captures Yochana to take her to Saul's court against her will. He knows that Saul will punish Maresha for not supporting his claim to the throne. And he doesn't want to see Yochana punished for the decisions of the city elders even though she supports the same decision. He kidnaps her to force her into King Saul's court as an artisan making perfumes for Saul's wife.
There's a bit of Stockholm syndrome as the two continue to grow closer to each other through their journey. Zevi is determined to find ample men to replace the ones that Maresha wouldn't supply, but he's having no luck anywhere he turns. And then to make matters worse, he hears potential news of his cousin, Keziah. He may be traveling with traders in the area and Zevi will never forgive himself if he doesn't try to find Keziah. But following this trail goes against Saul's orders for him, and his soldiers begin to question his ability to lead them.
Favorite quotes:
-"I have learned not to question Adonai's will. Only to obey."
-"I realized that my understanding of Yahweh was far too small and that I had no right to demand he bend to my will."
-"Somehow, while I was chasing after the world, Yahweh was still my shield."
-"Only Yahweh can stand as a righteous judge. Leave vengeance in his capable hands."
-"There is nothing wrong with fighting for our people, Zevi. It is a noble thing to sacrifice your life for another. But just as a soldier trusts his commander and a commander trusts his king, you must trust the King above all Kings to direct you. And as I've learned over these past years, the orders are more often whispered than shouted."
-By holding on to bitterness and hatred against those who'd wronged me, instead of giving thanks for how Adonai had rescued me from their grasp, I had become far more like my enemies than my God.
-"My only defense is that Yahweh was in it, Yochana. He placed me there, at the right time, and provided me with the perfect opportunity to join a work he'd already begun. I obeyed my orders."
And then from the author:
-We serve the God who spoke the universe into existence. The God who split the sea to rescue His people. The God who conquered death with an empty tomb. There is nothing at all that He cannot do. So keep your eyes on the Lord, my friend, for he is at your right hand. Do not be shaken (Psalm 16:8).
There are betrayals and near-death experiences. There are grand declarations of love and battle. Zevi and Yochana's relationship was beautiful to watch. I didn't need to worry about the plot taking over and overshadowing the relationships in this case, but I can see myself worrying about the same thing for the next release, Splendor of the Land. Shield of the Mighty gets 4 Stars. Have you read Shield of the Mighty? What did you think? Let me know!

I always thought Biblical fiction was boring because I thought I already knew all the stories in the Bible. It takes a good writer to make Biblical fiction interesting to me, and Cossette does that! This title is no exeption. I highly recommend this book and all others by this author.

4.5 rounded up to 5.
Connilyn Cossette’s latest addition to the King’s Men series delivers a powerful story of love, loyalty, and redemption set in ancient Israel. Zevi, a seasoned captain in King Saul’s army, returns to his hometown of Maresha on a mission to recruit soldiers and skilled artisans for the king. Here, he encounters Yochana, a fiercely independent widow and talented perfumer who harbors deep resentment toward the king responsible for her husband’s death. Their lives collide, sparking tension and a reluctant attraction that slowly grows into something undeniable.
Cossette masterfully captures the emotional landscape of ancient Israel, weaving a richly detailed world of faith, vengeance, and unexpected romance. Zevi’s journey from captor to protector and Yochana’s reluctant transformation from anger to understanding keep the stakes high, while Cossette’s attention to historical accuracy lends authenticity to each scene. Told in alternating perspectives, the story immerses readers in the characters’ struggles, making for a deeply engaging and beautifully written narrative.
This novel excels not only in historical richness but also in its exploration of inner conflict, resilience, and redemption. Cossette balances action and romance perfectly, making it a captivating read that will leave fans eagerly awaiting the next installment.
** Thanks to the publisher for a complimentary review copy. The opinions are my own.

This book proves what I've already discovered, that Connilyn Cossette excels in writing biblical and historical fiction! In this mesmerizing story, Shield of the Mighty, she continues the saga of four cousins living in Israel during the reign of King Saul. One of the cousins, Zevi, is now a captain in King Saul's army, and he's been assigned the tasks of finding additional soldiers to fight the Philistines and also recruit talented artists for the king's court. His return to his hometown is both troubling and exhilarating because it's there that he meets the lovely Yochana. He is instantly attracted to her, and even though she takes a little longer to return his feelings, the wait is worth it! Together, Zevi and Yochana took my breath away!
I've read most of Cossette's books and I admire her efforts to weave in-depth research with the truth of God's Word. I loved seeing Yochana's skills in making healing perfumes and I enjoyed the many insights into the culture of life during Old Testament times. Engaging characters and swoon-worthy romance are strong elements in this riveting tale that includes battles fought, consuming revenge, and intense mistrust, but the overriding themes are forgiveness and trust. Forgiving oneself, forgiving others, and trusting that God is with you and that you are being shielded by the Mighty!
If you're looking for biblical fiction that keeps you turning the pages, grab a copy of Shield of the Mighty, I can't wait to see what's next in The King's Men series!
I received a copy of this book from the author, publisher, and NetGalley. These are my honest thoughts.

Shield of the Mighty by Connilyn Cossette
The King’s Men book #2
This book tells Zevi’s story. He was a boy that was kidnapped by the Philistines and later adopted by the Champion of Ashdod. He is a soldier fighting for Israel, rising through the ranks to distinguish himself in King Saul’s men. On his quest to conscript more soldiers for the army and to gather artisans for Saul’s court, he must return to his hometown. He is drawn into a perfumer’s shop and is captivated by the scents and the artisan, Yochana. This chance meeting changes the course of both of their lives.
I really enjoy the writing style of Connilyn Cossette. This is the second book with these characters and I appreciated learning more about their histories. The characters are so well-drawn that I missed them when the book ended. I also enjoyed learning more about life during the early history of the nation of Israel.
Even though this is the second of the books in this series, the author gives enough background information that this book can be read and appreciated on its own, but for the most enjoyment, the first book, Voice of the Ancient should be read first. Readers who enjoy biblical fiction will find much to enjoy in this series, as Connilyn Cossette does much research to give the reader an authentic experience in the history of the nation of Israel. I received this book from the publisher in exchange for this, my honest opinion.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: Biblical Fiction
𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: "Long live King Saul!"
The shouts of the tribal leaders gathered in the valley echoed off the stony cliffs below our hiding place.
One of the hardest things in life is to let go of our hurts and to let God fight our battles.
We want to seek revenge, to taste that justice even if it will not being true satisfaction to us.
As I grow in my walk with the Lord, I've learned to seek more of His peace and to even pray for those who have hurt me, that they may someday experience God's love and mercy.
The story of Zevi and Yochana is a great example of letting go and letting God do what He must do. :)
Another to buy book from @connilyncossetteauthor
Even if you are not a fan of Biblical Fiction, you will certainly love this one (or any Connilyn Cossette book for that matter).

I really love the characters so I was looking forward to this book. The writing, the way you easily are transported, it was wonderful to pick up another book by Connilyn.
The romance between the characters is sweet and the main point I was curious to see was the continuation of the search of Zevi’s brother. It was a bit hard however to see the main leads romance come from a situation like it did because it was what Zevi despised yet he did the same actions to someone else, and I wish that wasn’t the way he had fallen in love. (Also ahhhhh the death of certain characters I was so sad! 😭) but I look forward to the next book and have them appear and continue to follow this family and their experiences.

This book did not disappoint. I love this author and she did a great job at telling a good story (continuation of previous story line, but you wouldn't need to read in order, although knowing the character's history does add to the story). A story of faith, forgiveness and growth and resilience. I love this author's writing as I feel I grow both spiritually and am entertained at the same time. The Old Testament is not as well known as the New Testament/Gospel and this story helps give a new look at an ancient time with relevant lessons for today.

Shield of the Mighty is a wonderful follow-up to Voice of the Ancient which is one of my favorite books of 2023. Connilyn's Biblical fiction are really my favorite of mine. She really knows how to bring to life the setting and all her characters so you feel like you are walking along with them. Zevi and Yochana are a great match for each other and I relished every moment of reading/listening to this story. I loved watching them grow and learn from their pasts.
If you're in the mood for amazing Biblical fiction, read Connilyn Cossette's books!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

Shield of the Mighty
The King's Men #2
By Connilyn Cossette
Zevi's whole life is focused on serving as a soldier and getting vengeance on the Philistines. He's never forgiven them for the pain they put him through. Rather ironic as the man he calls father is a Philistine, but it is what it is. And now he is returning to the town that sent him away as a child - Maresha. He needs to convince to supply men to serve in King Saul's army and to supply skilled workers for Saul's court.
Maresha has suffered loss as men lose their lives in service to a king they don't accept. Yochana lost her husband mere months after they were wed. She is no fan of a king who would squander the lives of his men, and she has no intention of using her skills as a perfumer in his court. And she'll gladly see Saul's recruiters gone.
But when events force Zevi and Yochana to see events from a different perspective, the Lord might give them peace and new beginnings more than they ever expected. But they must both let go of the resentments they stubbornly cling to.
This is a fascinating step back in time that doesn't rely on gimmicks to hold one's attention but on research and attention to detail. Both characters have compelling stories that elicit sympathy, and their growth moves the story forward. The story, though the second in the series, is complete and does not leave one hanging waiting for what comes next. This an excellent read and one I highly recommend.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

My Quick Takes:
- 4.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
- Language 🤐 none
- Spice ❤️🔥 kisses only
- Content Considerations 🤔 themes of violence, imprisonment, war. Past rape, parental death, spousal death
Readers finally get a peek into Zevi’s past. The male main character is sent on a mission to recruit more men to fight the Philistines, and to find skilled artisans to fill King Saul’s court. While on his mission, Zevi is forced to come face to face with his past, lending itself to great character development.
I love how Cossette drops readers into the biblical time period throughout her narratives. I enjoyed learning more of Zevi’s background and what makes him tick.
Yochana, a widow and perfumer, seems to be Zevi’s opposite in every way. As their stories intertwined, the romantic plot that developed is one I really appreciated. The book wrapped up so perfectly, and the final 20% made me want to reread the biblical account of the events referenced by Cossette. Very excited for the third book!

“But just as a soldier trusts his commander and a commander trusts his king, you must trust the King above all Kings to direct you. And as I’ve learned over these past years, the orders are more often whispered than shouted.” – Natan, Zevi’s father
❤️ MY THOUGHTS: Voice of the Ancient was one of my top reads of 2023 and so, when I received the approval email from NetGalley for Shield of the Mighty (book two of The King’s Men series), I was thrilled!
Connilyn Cossette is a gifted writer, a master at weaving biblical facts and fictional aspects to bring forth a captivating tale that not only honors and glorifies God but brings to life the rich history of Israel. Her stories are ones that ignite a desire to dig deeper into the Word of God and Shield of Mighty is no different as it will have you diving into the Old Testament and diligently reading the pages of 1 Samuel.
Told through the eyes of Zevi, a captain in King Saul’s army and Yochana, a widow and skilled businesswoman, Shield of the Mighty shines a light on the faithfulness and goodness of God and reminds us that when all seems lost, He is still there. That vengeance and justice belong to the LORD and that His ways and His timing are always perfect. It is a story of healing and forgiveness, love and restoration.

I loved it! Thank you, NetGalley and Bethany House, for my eARC in an exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Aside from being absolutely frustrated by Zevi’s decisions from the start (which I can’t talk about because, you know, spoilers) — I loved this story. @connilyncossetteauthor can craft such rich, colourful descriptions that I have no trouble picturing historical Israel.
I always love how Connilyn places her stories during real biblical events but doesn’t focus on real people in the Bible as her main characters. It’s a preference of mine not to read fictionalized accounts of actual people in the Bible, and I haven’t found many authors that write like Connilyn does.
I loved how relatable Yochana and Zevi are. Even the secondary characters in this book are colourful and brought to life. There are many deep spiritual truths to be found in here, and yet as a Christian book it never comes off as preachy. I know Christian books get a bad rap as being too ‘preachy’ but Connilyn weaves truth in her books in a beautiful, engaging way.
SHIELD OF THE MIGHTY highlights the very beginning stages of King Saul’s reign, with all the tensions and turmoil among the Israelites. Many have lost hope in a united Israel and have come to reject the king who sent their men to their deaths, all in the pursuit of glory. Which leaves Zevi, a captain in King Saul’s army tasked with recruiting soldiers, in a tough position.
I do recommend reading book 1, Voice of the Ancient, before you read this book, as there is an overarching storyline that would probably make sense on its own, but you’ll get more of the message if you read book 1 first. I absolutely loved this book and yes, I’m already waiting for book 3.

I love Avi's story, so I was excited to hear about this new book. I'm glad I read it. It's a fantastic story of love and loyalty. It was nice to see familiar characters from previous books. I think Zevi and Yochana are a perfect match. I wasn't happy with Zevi's initial choices, but I guess things happen for a reason. Their romance was a wild ride. So many things happened, making this a very interesting read. I highly recommend this series and can't wait for the next one.

Thank you Bethany House Publishers and #netgalley for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book is a continuation of a series. It was an enjoyable story set in the time of King Saul's reign. It is a romance but it also gives a lot of biblical background. Cossette's books always have depth and seem to be well-researched. I enjoy biblical fiction greatly and she is one of the best, in my opinion. I enjoyed seeing characters from the previous books in the series and seeing what has happened to them a few years later. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes biblical fiction and./or romance.

The Shield of the Mighty by Connilyn Cossette is a wonderful read. It kept me guessing what is going to happen next. I love the way the book is written, she writes it like it could have happened. You will enjoy reading it till the end. You won’t regret reading this story. Thank you for a wonderful read and I can’t wait for the next book you write.

I had only read about one page of this book before I set it down and went to grab the first book of the series. And I am so glad that I did. While the stories can stand alone, they are best read with the intricacies and history that come from starting at the beginning. A series of four close-knit cousins whose adventures begin together but take them through a wide array of life.
A Biblical Fiction with Romance story from the early years of King Saul’s reign, this novel took us on an adventure through the countryside and war. An enemies to lovers trope, our hero struggles between trusting his own strength and trusting Adonai. Our heroine is a widow and broken over the loss of her husband in battle. The depth and breadth of characters and culture was vast. This has been such an amazing series and my only disappointment is that the rest of the series isn’t available for me to read right now!! I’m excited to go and read all by this author.
I received an eARC of this book through NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I have never read a book by this author, but after reading this wonderful book I plan to go grab any of her other books that are published.
I see that this book has connections to previous books she’s written; however, it does stand alone and I never felt confused by all the characters introduced. Actually I thought the character development was done wonderfully.
Things happen quickly in this fast-paced book, and it’s hard to put it down. There are wonderful characters, plenty of action, intrigue, romance, and so much more. It was a wonderful way to see a scene from the Old Testament come to life. I look forward to reading any more books in this series.
