The Calling is a gripping exploration of faith, destiny, and the human spirit. Liam Lombard weaves a compelling narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The protagonist’s internal struggles are vividly portrayed, making it easy to empathize with their journey. Lombard’s prose is both lyrical and thought-provoking, effectively drawing readers into a world where the lines between the sacred and the ordinary blur.
However, there are moments where the pacing falters, and certain themes feel repetitive. While the philosophical questions raised are intriguing, they sometimes overshadow the plot’s momentum. Overall, The Calling is a thought-provoking read that will resonate with those interested in the complexities of belief and purpose, though it may not fully satisfy readers seeking a fast-paced story.
The world-building is exceptional, creating a vivid backdrop for the engaging story telling, making it easy to visualize the fantastical elements and the emotional depth of the characters. While the pacing may start slow for some, the story gradually builds momentum to a though provoking conclusion.
Overall, “The Calling” is a must-read for fans of fantasy who enjoy complex characters and intricate plots.
Thanks to Net Galley and Liam for introducing me to "The Calling" and allowing me to read it for a fair review.
The story s an enthralling debut that masterfully blends elements of fantasy, mystery, and adventure. The story follows a young protagonist, drawn by an inexplicable force to embark on a perilous journey that will test their courage, wit, and resolve.
Lombard's writing is crisp and engaging, immediately pulling readers into a richly constructed world where magic and danger intertwine. The protagonist's journey is both physical and emotional, as they encounter a host of memorable characters, each contributing to the intricate tapestry of the plot.
One of the standout features of this novel is Lombard's skillful world-building. The settings are vividly described, from ancient forests teeming with mystical creatures to bustling cities full of secrets. This attention to detail creates an immersive reading experience that captivates from beginning to end.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with distinct personalities and backgrounds that add depth to the narrative. The protagonist's growth throughout the story is particularly well-handled, providing a satisfying arc that resonates with readers.
also explores themes of destiny, self-discovery, and the battle between good and evil. Lombard weaves these themes seamlessly into the plot, creating a story that is both thought-provoking and entertaining.
Fantasy enthusiasts will find much to enjoy in this book, and it will leave them eagerly anticipating the next installment.
This is one of my new favorite books. The characters are loveable and the story telling is fantastic. Everyone needs to read this. If you like Brandon Sanderson, this is for you.
I wanted to like this book. I really did. Unfortunately I will be dnfing.
The premise was really intriguing. You have Blood mages,Vampires, dralings, fairies. You have a protagonist who really would rather sit at home and drink tea than go adventuring. You have a ruthless blood mage denying their nature mage heritage, while regretting their betrayal. All of that would have been amazing.
But the book is riddled with anachronisms. You could argue that its fantasy, so of course there will be a few anachronisms. But The Calling has so many of them that it's pretty jarring tbh. Also, the story is just not compelling enough for me to keep reading.
Two stars, solely for the premise and the potential.
