I started reading and then stopped when I realized it is part of a Young Adult series. As a whole, the series has a fun and exciting plot. books 1 and 2 just fell flat for me so I wasn’t looking forward to reading this, but wanted to push through since I had an ALC.
This was my favorite of the series. I felt there were secrets and twists intentionally left for this book and I wasn’t as bored as I was with the others.
This book focuses on the continued threat of the Whisperer and the Nightmare Masquerade and luminaries from all over join in, including unwanted guests as well. New enemies must be stopped as final secrets about Winnie’s father and family are finally revealed.
The growth of the characters are really highlighted in this book and while I didn’t love the first two, it was well written and a nice conclusion that kept me engaged.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for an honest review. Release date 11/19/24.
The Whispering Night is the third book in the Luminaries series. This book takes us back to Hemlock Falls with Winnie Wednesday, and her friends Erica Thursday and Jay Friday in under covering the secrets of the Dianas. Winnie tries to find out who the secretive and dangerous group of Diana witches that are casting spells and causing all kinds of trouble in Hemlock Falls. Winnie also tries to discover the secret behind the locket and notes that her dad has left for her right before he disappeared from his fellow Dianas. What was Winnie's Dad trying to tell her and warn her about the maze and the Whisperer that is in the forests of Hemlock Falls. Winnie is also busy trying to hid Jay's secrets and keep him from being found out and killed.
This book is fast paced, and I really enjoyed how the story comes together and I enjoyed the ending.
Thank you so very Netgalley and Macmillian Audio for allowing me to review this ARC. I highly recommend for fans of Susan Dennard and Young Adult fantasy.
Omg this book was so good, I'm so happy to have gotten to listen to it early. I can't wait for everyone to be able to enjoy it starting tomorrow. Definitely have some questions still and would love if there will be more. I loved what we did find out and what happened, and really feel there could be another book or spin off and hope that there will be.
Tagging along in Winnie Wednesday’s mind is an experience. A delightful one, to be sure. And The Whispering Night was no different. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook for this series because the narrator does a great job of embracing the chaos in Winnie’s head.
The Whispering Night did a good job of knitting together the plot threads to give a satisfactory series conclusion, while leaving enough threads dangling to hope that maybe, someday, the author will come back to their world and give us a sneak peak of their future.
Thank you to NetGalleg and Macmillan Young Listeners for the advanced copy!
I love the continued evolution of the different relationships throughout the series. I’ve enjoyed “watching” Winnie come into her own more and stay true to her values. I love her personality and internal dialogue. Modern technology is included as references throughout the series. I appreciate the incorporation of current tech and references in fantasy based stories as so many are set outside of our time or environment.
It’s always a guessing game on how much of previous book’s plots are incorporated. Susan does a fantastic job of weaving in the references you need to know if it’s been a while since reading the previous book. It’s just enough to jog your memory without taking too much from the current storyline.
I appreciate the addition of mental health references and Winnie’s progress in terms of coping mechanisms and increased self confidence and belief in herself. Her determination in not letting other’s push her around while also having moments of self-doubt is relatable and makes me like her even more.
I listened to the audiobook of this (and the previous in the series). The narrator has a great cadence and emphasizes Winnie’s wit and sass.
This was the perfect ending to this amazing series!!!! This final book in this trilogy wrapped everything up so perfectly. It had been a few months since I read books 1 and 2 and I forgot how quickly so much happens in these books. It’s fast paced and pulls you so deep into the story you might as well be there with the characters! Overall I loved this series and I’m so happy it had a happy ending :)
The dark forest that the Luminaries guard to protect the town is more dangerous than ever in the final book of this trilogy.
Winnie Wednesday’s future is much different now than before her 16th birthday. She has passed the trials to train to become a hunter for the Luminaries and the town no longer shuns her family. She has her friends back, Hemlock Falls is no longer hunting the werewolf, and Winnie finally knows exactly how Jay Friday feels about her. How he always felt about her, and what he sacrificed thinking he was keeping her safe.
A week-long celebration of all things Luminary is planned, and they want Winnie front and center since she is the buzz of the town. Her success in the trials was made known to the Luminaries from across the world and they came into her small town to celebrate, but uninvited guests also arrived. Winnie is confronted by a powerful masked Diana (witch) and forced to complete an impossible task quickly—if she doesn't, it threatens everything and everyone Winnie loves.
Old mysteries are popping up and her missing father is somehow entangled with her search for hidden witches, and Winnie needs to find out exactly what happened. He has left many clues for her to find and hopefully put the pieces together so she can stop the Diana's and hopefully he can be free once again.
This final book in the Luminaries trilogy wrapped up this YA fantasy with a bit of tragedy, answers a few mysteries, brings back friendships, and love, and addresses things that seem dark and wicked but aren't always what they seem. These books are quick to read and have plenty of magic with interesting mystical creatures. The romance is sweet and not overdone (no spicy scenes) and the overall story doesn't lack intrigue with what is going on in the town and how it affects Winnie, her family, and her friends.
I was given the audiobook through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Just as things seem to be getting back on track for Winnie Wednesday, new visitors start coming to town for the Nightmare Masquerade celebration. Some of those visitors have nefarious intentions, and Winnie must confront them in order to protect herself, her loved ones, and the woods.
There is a lot going on in this one. Secrets are revealed; questions are answered; and the war between the Luminaries and the Dianas comes to a head.
We still see the budding romance between Jay and Winnie and the rekindled friendship between Winnie and Erica, but they take a bit of a backseat to all of the moving pieces and parts that lead to a massive face-off between Winnie and the witches.
Note: This is the third book in the trilogy. The books in this series are meant to be read in order.
As with the first two audiobooks, Caitlin Davies does a great job with the narration here. I enjoyed the various voices she uses to portray different characters. Her portrayal of soft-spoken Jay is still my favorite of the group.
I received an advance copy of the audiobook from Macmillan Audio. All review opinions are my own.
I have to admit, after reading the first two, this conclusion fell short. It felt so repetitive. It felt like it took so long to get anywhere. I can see how others would love this series, but I just couldn’t enjoy it more than a 3 star, general entertainment. I heard “bergamot and lime” far too many times. The narrator was great, I did appreciate the audio. However the story overall just felt too drawn out.
To me, this wasn’t as good as books one and two. I didn’t connect with the characters like I did in the earlier books, but it was still an entertaining read. I also enjoyed the narrator. However, Winnie’s habit of clicking her teeth continued to drive me crazy. I really thought the author would turn the clicking into a surprising character reveal. Sadly, that didn’t happen.
All in all, this was a fun conclusion to the trilogy.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with a digital version of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Whispering Night is the continuation of Winnie Wednesday's saga in Hemlock Falls. After learning Jay's secret and discovering that there are in fact Diana's in Hemlock falls, Winnie Wednesday teams up with the original WTF group, determined to figure out what happened to Erica Thursday's sister and Winnie's dad.
This book is action packed from the very first chapter, and gripping installment on the incredible world that Susan Dennard has created. I found myself completed spellbound by the rich history she created, The nightmares and whole premise of the compendium are incredible but the entire ecosystem she's build of this lifeforce is such good storytelling.
As a science teacher by day, I appreciated all the scientific explanations adoring how Dennard tied science into to fantasy in a seamless package.
I'm always a harsh critic on the third book in a trilogy, but I have to say the lose ends of this story, were tied in a seamless bow with a satisfying ending and the seeds for more.
PLEASE LET THERE BE MORE.
The narration was also fantastic. I loved the narrators voices, even when weak at the knees during her breathy rendtion of Jay uttering off scientific terminology... Homeostsis...
Overall. Very enjoyable read. One of my top favorite new fantasy series.
As a big lover of The Luminaries, I was super excited for this one and it did not disappoint! We cannot wait to get this into the bookstore for our customers. YA fantasy readers, this series is a must!
I was excited to be jumping back into the luminaries world thanks to netgalley and publisher for an advanced listener copy.
It took me a good minute to grasp what was going on which i truly feel that was my fault as i forgot a bit of what was going on in the last book. i loved being back in hemlock falls and being with the gang. I enjoyed the way winnie has to try to sovle this mystery and the writing was good.
The narrator was really good, keep up with the different characters and having an accent on a few. The only thing i did not like was the recording in the story i.e a certain part had time stamps and then talking from two different characters and it kinda felt off in my ears.
sadly i feel this read was not as good as the others in the series, sometimes i was confused to why the thing was happening or just did not make sense. I also wished we had more of the "crow" from the ending of book two, I was let down to the discovery of the mystery winnie was trying to solve, the characters felt a bit dull in this read and some times i wondered if certain things would have been better if it was written differently. Lastly i felt like there was alot of repeating, like we have heard many time about certain things yet we are getting reminded of them over and over again.
I do really still care for this series but i am very much hooked on book one the most.
The world in this fantasy series is hauntingly impressive. The fast-paced action really keeps you hooked. In a place filled with werewolves, banshees, sylphs, and other nightmare creatures, The Whisper is probably the scariest of them all. The Whispering Night is the final book in the Luminaries Series, and it's just as packed with action and secrets as the previous ones. Winnie's relationship with Jay is on solid ground, and her training is going well. She even starts to rebuild her friendship with Erica Thursday. But things get tricky as she faces a time-sensitive situation, battling with her loyalty and how to protect the community from The Whisper. Plus, her mission to clear her father's name and find out what happened to him adds to the weight of it all. I am so glad I read this unique series.
The Narrator, Caitlin Davies does a wonderful job creating emotion and conveying the atmosphere. I enjoyed listening to her narration.
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan audio for the advanced listener copy. This is my honest review.
The third book in the series is typically better than the second, which holds true for this series. The book begins on a positive note: Winnie is friends with Erica again, they aren’t hunting the werewolf, and she and Jay might be figuring out their relationship. But soon everything changes when Winnie is given an honor she doesn’t want, putting her in the public eye, which leads to an unwelcome confrontation with a Diana. As Winnie continues to search for her missing father, she finds out more about her family history and the feud between the Dianas and the Luminaries. This was an action packed ending to the trilogy, and if you were on the fence because of book 2, read this one to finish the series.
Five *fantastic conclusion* Stars
So. Many. Answers.
Where is Winnie's father and what happened to him?
Are the enemies really their enemies?
What's going on with Jay?
I do not have a single complaint about this final book in The Luminaries series. It's definitely a series that will be on my reread list. Caitlin Davies does a wonderful job at narrating this series.
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this story.

I enjoyed the audiobook! I would definitely recommend the narrator. The book itself was an enjoyable and satisfying conclusion to the triology!
I gave the second book in this series 4.25 stars and I think this one matches that.
We start off right where the second one left off. We learn Jay is a werewolf and Erica is kind of a Diana. After Winnie wins the Midnight Crown for the upcoming festivities, she meets the masked Diana crow who gives her an impossible task to complete.
My favorite thing about these book is how alone Winnie starts out and how she realizes that even through her banishment, she had people who cared about her and after her banishment was over, she could let people in who stopped talking to her, because they were just following ruled drilled into them. Bretta, Emma and Fatima were such a supportive group of girls and even when Winnie had to figure things out with Jay and Erica, they were still there for her. Winnie and Jay's relationship was never really the focus of any part of the book, but it was a constant thing and it was obvious that the feelings were big. I also love Winnie's relationship with her mom and brother Darian. They were all each other had for 4 years and it's obvious that bond became so strong.
The pacing of this book was kind of fast, slow, fast, slow. When there was a lull, it always picked back up when it felt like it needed to. We really do get most if not all of our answers by the end of this book. There is a strong possibility of someone being a crow (the actual animal, not the crow-masked Diana) and the way this ties everything together at the end is perfect.
While these books are told from Winnie's POV, there are flashbacks and snippets from others here and there. There is one snippet at the end of this one that would make a perfect lead-in to another series or a spin off that would be so fun to read about!
The narrator of this series was really great. She made the perilous things seem so perilous and really brought the characters and story to life. Her voice was very enjoyable to listen to and made it easy to comprehend the story.
Not my favorite novel of this series and not exactly how I imagined the events of this book would go/flow, but in all I was simply satisfied with the story. I do not know if the author is planning to continue the world of Hemlock Falls with nightmares and hunters, but I sure hope she does. If so, I might like to see another Luminaries town. I just feel like maybe Hemlock Falls has seen its natural conclusion. I do see that she might have set it up to continue following Winnie and Jay, but I do think this last installment wasn't quite as interesting as the first two.
Thank you to the author, NetGalley, & Macmillan Audio for the audioARC! I was simply entertained!! :-)
First off, as with the first two books the narrator did a fantastic job! The audio flowed and each character's vocals were consistent and clear. As with the other two installments the world in which Dennard has created is breathtaking. I love the idea and the characters, and its the first time since reading Harry Potter that I feel an author has succeeded in building a world that exists within our own that feels believable. For that reason, I will continue to recommend this series to all my YA reading patrons/book clubbers. As for rating the story, I only gave this particular installment a 3.5 star. The story and the characters didn't flow for me as they had in the last two; the characters almost felt out of character, if you know what I mean. Winnie has never exactly been confident, but with everything she has survived and endured in a short period of time, I felt she needed to be bolder...especially when it came to Erika, the higher ranking Luminaries, and the Diana's. Each book was able to show progression of Winnie and her journey of self-discovery, but this one felt like she wobbled a lot. It just made it hard to push through in some parts of the book. Neither did this novel have much of what I loved best about the series--the nightmares.
I was also a bit let down on the reveal of the mystery behind her father's disappearance and what happened to Jenna. There wasn't a twist a was hoping for or a revelation I hadn't been able to guess after book 1. It was just an okay wrap up to a much heavier build. I felt a bit let down. Also the last scene was super cheesy... very cute though for the younger YA readers.
I would recommend this to any reader, no matter age, who likes books that center around friendship, loyalty, PG romance, and self-discovery.
No Regrets!!!!
I would like to thank the publisher for sending me an audio-arc in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley.
What an ending! This series has been so full of monsters and action and mystery that I wasn't sure how it could end in a way that not only made sense, but also ended on a happier note.
One thing that I loved about this book is that we finally get a lot of answers to questions we've had since book one, tying everything together perfectly. We get to see Winnie at her best, we get to see a lot of character growth, and for me, that was everything we needed for this final installment. My only wish was there was a little more romance? But I was also okay with what we got. I love Jay so much, and I just wanted to see more of him and Winnie together because ahh they are adorable!
The action was intense. I was on my toes from start to finish, and even then I felt like despite everything, I couldn't trust the ending because holy crap there were so many twists and turns I felt like I had whiplash. The mystery was not only twisty, but unravelled in a way that had me second guessing everything. I definitely recommend this trilogy, and I highly recommend the audiobook as the narrator does a fantastic job bringing this series to life.
