This book has a depth that I think would be appropriate for more mature young adult readers. Though there are breath-catching moments, I found that I was lured in more by the beauty of the writing and characters than by the plot itself. The title would be great for exploring essential questions and theme during a reading of the book or use of different titles with similar themes during literature circles. The phrase "A Matter of Souls" really packs a punch as both a theme and a title, which I think is a metaphor for Patrick's crafty writing and stellar characters. This book isn't an easy read emotionally, but it will have been worth it.

A well-written and enjoyable book, I am glad I requested this title and will be more than happy to pass the title along to my fellow library purchasers.
