I read all of the Will Trent books because I was given a NETGALLEY ARC of this book and wanted to give it my full, honest opinion (including the other books in the series). This story was so unique compared to the other stories in the Will Trent sphere. In some ways, that made it super fun and unique. But in other ways, it felt somewhat unbelievable what happened and how it happened. I still really enjoyed myself and am grateful for the opportunity to read the arc!
Thank you Harper Collins!
This was wholly atmospheric! The setting was phenomenal and really let this book shine. The twist at the end was shocking and one I did not see coming!
Karin Slaughter is masterful at suspense, plot, and action. I give this one five stars because her writing makes the reader hold their breath as the story builds into a tense finale, but I would urge a content warning.
This Is Why We Lied is an absolute page-turner! Karin Slaughter delivers a gripping, intense thriller with twists and secrets that keep you hooked from start to finish. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is filled with suspense, making it hard to put down. Slaughter’s ability to weave complex emotions and tension into the story really stands out. If you're a fan of dark, compelling mysteries with unpredictable endings, this one is a must-read. Highly recommend for thriller lovers!
I loved every minute of this new book in the Will Trent series! It involves a toxic family with lots of secrets. This story is full of twists, and, wow, I could never have guessed that ending! Fun ride from start to finish!

I enjoy the Will Trent books but I actually found Sara and Will to be slightly annoying in this one, as much as it pains me to say that.
Another installment in Will and Sarah's adventures. I actually like them a lot. Off on their honeymoon and boom - a murder in the midst. The resort manager, who’s also the owner’s daughter, gets brutally murdered! But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying….Lying about their past. Lying to their family. Lying to themselves. This was so good. Plenty of mind blowing twists.
Thanks to Netgalley and William Morrow for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
We have been watching Will Trent on TV so it took me a couple of chapters to reconcile the TV version with the written version of the character. It was a little like seeing Hamilton the first time and trying to remember all the players. The story was similar to an Agatha Christie murder mystery with a VC Andrews twist. The story covered the realm from murder to incest, child abuse, spousal abuse, matricide and political corruption. It was definitely a page turner with a surprise ending.
When GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton arrived at McAlpine Lodge for their honeymoon, they were looking forward to a time of relaxation, romance and bonding with nature. Never in their wildest dreams did they imagine someone being murdered on their first night, with Will finding the body of Mercy McAlpine as she breathed her last. Their immediate suspect was Mercy's ex, a man Will knew from the past, and when the local cop arrived, he immediately came to the same conclusion. He also declined any help from GBI, Will or Sara, not even willing to interview the guests.
When Faith and Amanda arrived, it was obvious access to the Lodge was limited. With a storm on them, Will and Sara did what they did best; their investigation began to turn up grave secrets, deep and dark lies, and the realisation there was a murderer among them. They had many suspects, but everyone had a reason to murder Mercy. Would they find the answers before someone else died?
This Is Why We Lied is the 12th in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter and it was excellent. Set on top of a mountain, the beautiful scenery, native wildlife and vast aloneness was a perfect spot for murder. Will and Sara are happy, content and have come together as one in this episode - it was great to see. Until work disrupted them, their honeymoon was put to one side, and the race was on. Highly recommended.
Will Trent and new bride Sara Linton, are on their honeymoon at McAlpine Lodge, a family owned lodge. You must hike in to get there. After the guests are settled in, Will and Sara hear a horrific scream. They find the manager of the lodge Mercy McAlpine dieing with multipul stab wounds, she is on the edge of the lake. As Will and Sara question the other guests they find they are not the only ones there lying about who or what they are. Everyone is trapped at the resort due to a major storm, so they are all stranded with a killer. Thanks netgalley.
I'm a big fan of Karin Slaughter so as soon as I saw this one, I requested it! Unfortunately, I didnt pay attention to it being one in a series and life got super busy and I was not able to read it (or revisit the others to pick back up where I left off).
"This Is Why We Lie" by Karin Slaughter is a gripping and intricately woven thriller that delves into the dark complexities of human relationships and the secrets that can tear them apart. The story is set against a backdrop of crime and moral ambiguity, following a cast of compelling characters who are forced to confront their pasts and the lies they've told.
Slaughter’s writing is both sharp and evocative, drawing readers into a world where trust is fragile and truth is elusive. The plot is expertly crafted, with twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats, while also delving deeply into the characters' psyches. Themes of betrayal, guilt, and redemption are explored with nuance, making the emotional stakes feel incredibly real.
With rich character development and a haunting narrative, "This Is Why We Lie" is a thought-provoking thriller that examines the lengths to which people will go to protect themselves and those they love. Slaughter has once again proven her mastery of the genre, delivering a story that is as thrilling as it is impactful. This novel will resonate with fans of psychological suspense and anyone interested in the darker sides of human nature.
The book was beautifully written and another great piece from Karin Slaughter! Overall, the book was well written and I did really enjoy it.
I just love this series and the recurring cast of characters. I liked the setting of this one and the kind of feel of a locked room mystery because it added to the suspense. This book is a prime example of how you can write a book with very unlikeable characters but still make it an enjoyable read. Like so many of this author's books, this was a big book. There were a few times when the story dragged a little, but boy that last 1/3 amped everything up.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC copy of this! It’s my first book from this author and I enjoyed it. I do wish I had read the rest of the series first but overall it was still an enjoyable experience. I plan to read more from this author and start this series from the beginning !
I love the rapport and the relationship between Will and Sara. It's sweet and endearing.
The mystery and story behind it were truly warped and salacious.
Will needs Sara as much as Sara needs Will and I'm happy they got together.
I look forward to their next adventure.
Karin Slaughter is and always will be one of my favorite thriller authors. I enjoy her writing style. I have not picked up any of the Will Trent Series books though. However one of the main characters is a character from some of her other books. This is the 12th one! 😬 It was so good. I enjoyed the characters (and a lot of them). They had depth and relationships. It was twisty! Highly recommend, make sure you check the trigger warnings before reading.
Will and Sara, a GBI Investigator and medical examiner, go to a secluded lodge on the mountain for their honeymoon. The only way to get there is to hike up. That evening, they hear an awful scream and Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the lodge, is found dead. Will and Sara begin to try to find out who the murderer is and why. But every single person on that mountain is lying about something and they all seem to have motive. Did I mention there is a raging storm, and no one can leave or enter?
This is a great twisty locked room ish thriller. I loved the relationship dynamic between Will and Sara. The McAlpines are some awful characters and I felt so bad for Mercy. I really enjoyed this book.
I love Karin Slaughter books and am always made that she can come up with another amazing adventure for Will Trent. This book grabbed me from the first page and I raced to the end!!! Twists and turns galore!
Thank you William Morrow and Netgalley for the chance to read and review this book!!!
Always love Karin Slaughter. Definitely a book for library purchase. Thanks to #netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an ARC.
