I didn’t love the start of the book due to speed and confusion, but it definitely picked up as it progressed and I found myself much more interested in the characters!

Karin Slaughter returns to top form with the latest installment of the Will Trent series. This is a complexly plotted book that will command the reader's attention. Set during Will and Sara's honeymoon that takes them to a remote ecolodge a murder is committed on their second night. With no cellular service or internet access Will is left to attempt to figure out who committed the murder. Plagued by his old nemesis from the children's home where he grew up, Will feels at a disadvantage. This book will appeal to all those who have enjoyed this series.

Karin Slaughter continues to blow my mind, and this latest book is a wild ride. Can Will Trent finally catch a break when he marries the lovely Sara and departs for a surprise honeymoon off the grid? Of course, after one magical night at a quiet resort with no telephone reception and time alone with Sara, they hear a scream and a deadly crime occurs, ruining their formerly wonderful trip. A murder blows the whole thing up with lies, deceit, injury, alcoholism, foster care, dead bodies, multiple (and I mean many) suspects, horrible parents, child abuse, hooch, and more stuff than I can share. The exciting thing is that Ms. Slaughter manages to take a lot of situations and tie them up in the end for a crazy conclusion. She’s a master at the area of the killer thriller. I love Will and Sara, and hopefully, we will have more of their adventures in the future. But really, does anything good ever come from going totally off the grid? Wow. #ThisIsWhyWeLied #murder #thriller #thrillerfiction #murder #LotsOfTriggers #abuse @karinslaughterauthor #honeymoon #offTheGrid @netgalley @williammorrowbooks

This is my favorite series and Slaughter knocked it out of the park once again. This had all her trademark ways - it was dark, twisty and full of interesting characters with sad backstories. This takes less of a police procedural format compared to some of her previous books but it worked well for the plot and the setting. While you can read this as a standalone, I highly recommend you go and start with the beginning of the series. Seriously, if Slaughter ever stops this series (please don’t!) I will not know what to do with myself.

I can't stay away from Karin Slaughter's novels. This Is Why We Lied (#12 in the Will Trent series) is described by Special Agent Faith Mitchell as "an Agatha Christie locked room mystery with a VC Andrews twist."
After 2023's After That Night, Georgia Special Agent Will Trent is finally enjoying some "non-criminal" time with his new bride Dr. Sarah Linton.
The couple hike five miles through the north Georgia woods to arrive at Will's surprise honeymoon getaway: McAlpine Lodge.
The McAlpines aren't any ordinary family. A creepy mom, a wheelchair ridden patriarch, an abusive adopted son, a scheming biological son, and a daughter named Mercy, the town harlot
Mercy runs the hotel. Her scarred face is only the tip of the iceberg to Mercy's suffering.
Ten guests finally arrive. Their first dinner is full of McAlpine family drama and a smorgasbord of secrets.
Later that night, while Will and Sarah share a moonlight skinnydip, they hear screams.
Murder is afoot in the deep Georgia woods!
Slaughter slaps the reader with so many possibilities and red herrings, I felt like I was in a Christie Mystery.
Bring in Will's partner, Faith, and the tension ratchets up to 11.
Whodunit? Who's next? And will Sarah and Will ever have a real honeymoon?
Bring out the Deep Woods Off and watch your back. This Is Why We Lie is clever, insane and Karin Slaughter at her ferocious best.

Five gut-punching stars for this absolutely incredible thriller! Karin Slaughter never misses, and this one is another stellar addition to the Will Trent series.

Will and Sara are on their honeymoon at the McAlpine Lodge. One evening, they hear a scream, and the honeymoon takes an unexpected turn.

It is imperative that you go into this one with no preconceived notions. You will have theories throughout this story, and then the author will pull the rug out from under you over and over again. The ending of this one is truly a gut-punch and much darker than I expected.

Will Trent is an amazing character. His story continues to evolve, and I root for him every time. Sara has changed so much since the beginning of this series, and she is such an incredible support to Will as well as being her own independent badass woman. Faith and Amanda are two of my favorite characters in this series - I loved their interactions with Will and Sara too. If you know, you know.

I also listened to the audiobook of this one - thank you so much to William Morrow Books for sending me the audiobook too. Kathleen Early does an amazing job with this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow books for the digital copy of this book! I am go grateful for the opportunity to read and review it. It is out now, and I highly recommend this book and this series!

The 12th book of the series. I had only read one other book in the series but you didn't need to read the rest if you are just looking for the mystery. But if you want to know the characters then you should start from the beginning.
Will is on his honeymoon with Sara. He is an investigator and she is a medical examiner. They are both also married to their jobs.
Will made this honeymoon happen and got this secluded cabin retreat where you have to hike to get there. Luggage and other deliveries are taken there by a small back road.
Mercy has been running the resort for quite awhile. Her father is in a wheelchair, and makes her fell like shit along with her mother.. Mery's brother and ex husband also work there. She is raising her son there and wants to be able to run it with h. Someone wants to buy the place but Mercy doesn't want to sell. There is a big blowup and nasty things are said to her. Then that night she is killed.
There are several other couples renting the cabins and it seems like everyone is lying who they are and what they do.
I loved getting to know all the characters and what they are thinking. Trying to figure out who would want to hurt Mercy the lost was on my mind and I was wrong.
Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the book to review.

This locked room mystery is an addictive, shocking, and gritty edition to her Will Trent thriller series and honestly, it feels like her best one yet 🤌🏻

It felt SO good to be back with Will and Sara! And even better, they are finally married 🥳🎉 they continue to be one of my favorite couples in the literary world so seeing them live out their happily ever after is so satisfying. But, this is Karin Slaughter, so of course we can’t just leave it with that.

A remote mountain resort. The strange and dysfunctional family that runs it. 4 couples that are staying as guests. And Mercy McAlpine, the daughter of the owners and resort manager that was just murdered in the middle of the night.

As we learn more about the McAlpines and all the guests at the resort, it seems that almost everybody had a reason to want Mercy dead. And everybody seems to be lying about it.

Some people say Karin Slaughter is too “wordy,” but I really think she does a fantastic job of telling a story and building characters. About half of these characters are deeply unlikable, but they are written so well that’s it’s easy to see why they behave a certain way.

This book was very intense, but it also does a fantastic job of sucking you in, so it’s very easy to keep reading. This is the 12th book in the Will Trent series, and I highly recommend reading the others to get the full backstory of the characters to really appreciate them. BUT it does work well as a stand alone!

Absolutely 5 stars from me!

Huge thank you to Netgalley and Karin Slaughter for this arc in exchange for a review!

One toxic family. Eight suspicious guests. Everyone is guilty. But who is the killer?

Will Trent fans will not be disappointed with this next installment in the series. The story finds Will and Sara celebrating their honeymoon at The McAlpine family resort. Secluded in the mountains of Georgia where there is only one way in and that’s a two mile hike. What could go wrong when an epic storm leaves the guests with no way out? Who, and why, would someone murder one of the McAlpines?

@karinslaughterauthor writing style leaves you guessing with every turn of the page and makes you believe everyone is a suspect. It was a crazy read! Please take your time to research trigger warnings, too many to list!

Thank you @netgalley and @williammorrowbooks for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

“This Is Why We Lied,” by Karin Slaughter, William Morrow, 464 pages, August 20, 2024.

For Georgia Bureau of Investigations investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect.

They are in a lake when someone screams. They run back to the lodge and see one of the cabins is on fire. Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the lodge, was stabbed and is dying. She is able to briefly speak to Will before her death.

The story then goes back in time to reveal problems in the McAlpine family. And Will knows one of them from when he was a foster child. Then another person dies.

The characters are great and the plot is a variation of a locked room mystery. The only drawback is the identity of the murderer was too easy to figure out, despite several misdirections. Warning, there is domestic violence and sexual abuse. This is the 12th in the series. The television show “Will Trent” is based on the books.

I rate it four out of five stars.

Karin Slaughter’s Grant County & Will Trent books are basically my favorite series ever and I’m adored This Is Why We Lied. In this thrilling crime novel, Will and Sara have finally married and honeymooning on a beautiful, off-the-grid, mountain top property. On their first night at the lodge, a chilling scream shatters the tranquility and they soon discover a murder! ⁣

⁣This book starts out with a bang and just keeps the punches flying. I loved how This Is Why We Lied felt like an old fashioned Agatha Christie novel. It’s full of atmospheric tension, unlikable characters and the most messed up family I’ve read about in a while! This is a satisfying story that kept me reading well after my bedtime! ⁣

Thank you, Netgalley, Wiilliam Morrow, and Karin Slaughter for an advance copy of "This is why we lied." William Trent and Sara Linton are celebrating their honeymoon. They are taking a break from crime scenes when at the McAlpine Lodge, the manager, Mercy becomes murdered. William and Sara jumped right into work mode to investigate Mercy's family, ex-husband, and the other camper/ workers to determine whom was involved in this tragedy. Small town hold secrets that hopefully GBI investigators are going to crack. Karin Slaughter is an incredible author, and she knows how to keep the reader at the edge of their seat.

This is why we lied will become available Aug 20, 2024. Thank you again for the advance for an honest review.

This Is Why We Lied was the best thriller I’ve read in a while! I have never read any of the previous Will Trent books, so I was hesitant to jump in at this point. I’m happy to report that it works just as well as a standalone. I didn’t feel like I was missing any context or that the plot lines of the previous novels were spoiled!

The book starts with a couple (Will & Sara) on their honeymoon at a ski resort, where one of the owners (Mercy) is found murdered. To add to it, they all get snowed in! As with most whodunnits, everyone is hiding something or has some reason for wanting Mercy dead. It’s up to Will and Sara to solve the case.

This Is Why We Lied had me guessing until the very end, and I ended up being wrong! If you know me, you know thrillers are probably the only instance where I WANT to be wrong, and dang did the author deliver on that. This book has me beyond excited to read not only more from this author, but also to read the rest of the Will Trent series. A must read for thriller lovers!

Big warning that some of the topics in this book are really heavy, so make sure you take the content warnings into consideration before reading.

Thank you to NetGalley and William Morrow for the gifted ARC!

We read the whole death scene, right? We know everything the victim has to say and how she goes out and all of that stuff.
But.
With, like, 4% left in the book we're told we misheard her? That's cheap.

This book was absolutely crazy!!!
If you read this book (which you should) and you’re able to figure out the ending, I will be blown away!
Karin takes her time introducing us to all the characters and they all pack their own punch. I feel like I have whiplash after reading this book!! 😳

*Please check trigger warnings due to many tough and hard topics.
