The Girl Who Wouldn’t Stop Dying was a pleasant surprise. I’ve never read this author and I was expecting a middle-of-the-road thriller of a young girl in danger. What I got was something more gritty. The mountains of California, my favorite places, were a backdrop to the kind of incestuous small town that produces the kind of men I met in Rush, Ca. And a believable one at that. I live in one of those towns. The amount of time and money it takes to stop being an outsider is pretty realistically drawn.
Sam Salazar is flawed. She’s an addict. She’s depressed. She’s unmoored. She doesn’t like very many people. She really doesn’t like Beth-fellow addict and town crazy woman. She is still looking for her dead sister. What happened to her sister and others is a well protected town secret.
There are a lot of people in town who are hiding things. The most attractive thing about this book was that almost no one is fully right. These are some well-rounded characters so far. I look forward to where they are going. The actions and motivations range back and forth between horribly realistic and horribly unbelievable. And it’s the first one of a series!
Lauren Street does it again with The Girl Who Couldn't Sstop Dying! This book has it all: Twists, turns, verbal punches, kick-ass heroine, and more. For fans of the Bishop Smokey Mountain series, The Girl Who Couldn't Stop Dying is an absolute MUST read, especially since it is book one in the new Salazar Redwood Forest series..
This was overall a good story, I really liked Lauren's writing. I had a hard time liking Sam and Beth's characters though. I think I will try her Bishop Smokey Mountain thriller series.
Unfortunately this one did not work for me at all, I just could not get into it. The storyline and the characters did not do it at all. It really fell flat. I had to DNF.
This was an interesting read. Sam was a brash, in-your-face, hair-trigger-temper kind of character, and while I did like her, at the same time I did not. I'm not sure if that was an intentional character design choice by the author or not. If it is, well done!
The writing style is to the point, with enough descriptors to have you in the scene without being flowery or overly so. It helped keep the pace of the book on the active side so you stayed in the height of the mystery and the suspense.
There are several heavy themes in this book, which include drug/alcohol abuse, PTSD, childhood trauma and abuse, grief, mental health issues, racism, and small-town mentality. There are several 'townie' characters that exhibit the good-ole-boy mob mentality of boys will be boys surrounding one particular incident, which may be triggering to some.
I give this book a solid 4 stars.
This was a terrible read. I loved the concept when I first read the blurb but I just could not get into it. I was bored and ended up DNF about 1/3 of the way through. I'm sure it's a great read for some people but it just wasn't my taste.
Not a book for me but I finished it. I had never read this author and thought it sounded interesting but it didn’t keep my interest at all.
Thank you to NetGalley, author Lauren Street and publisher Sterling and Stone for the ARC and opportunity to review this book.
In my opinion it is a solid 3.5 stars. The beginning hit like a ton of bricks and had me completely hooked. There were a lot of characters in this book and I think some of them weren’t really necessary in the overall storyline. At some points the vast amount of characters became confusing.
There were many shocking twists and it was a gripping psychological thriller. Many times I thought I had it figured out only to be shocked at the next twist.
A part of storyline was a little too far fetched for me to give it 4 stars. So much of the plot was so realistic but a few times it jumped into more fantasy.
I feel the storyline could have been more detailed in regard to Sam’s daughter. I feel like that would have added a little extra to the book.
It was a great read, I just feel it was missing something to make it that 4 or 5 star read.
Overall 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ that I would recommend and I would absolutely read more from this author
Looking for a quick read? Then this book is for you! I really hope there is another book in this series because I loved this book! Sam what more can I say then loved this lead character! Sam helps Beth find out if her sister Dorothy is alive or is Beth just seeing a ghost??? This author makes sure that you also don't know what to believe! Small town deceit , crooked politicians and cops . what more can I say ? Excellent book. So captivating. I need another book ! Nice little twist at the end. Read it ! 100% would recommend.
I tried to like this book, but in the end, it wasn't for me. The plot veered from mystery to horror and back. It felt disjointed. Some of the descriptions were clunky and none of the characters were particularly likeable or memorable.
I appreciate receiving this eARC from Netgalley and the publishers.
Lauren Street has a new series., and this is a nice start. A good story with twists, a troubled main character, secrets, a small town ’mind your own business’ setting. It's a bit dark and gritty but interesting and well written.
I received a review copy for free thanks to Netgalley and I’m leaving a voluntary and honest review.
As with all Lauren Street books that I have read I was hooked immediately and loved the build-up and pace and tension.
I enjoyed the different time lines and seeing the impact of the past on the present. The author writes well and has created some vivid, if not altogether likeable, characters,
I've never read this author before but tried this because the title and synopsis sounded good. This wasn't for me, unfortunately, I found the writing to seem formulaic and the characters not engaging, but if you are a fan of Lauren Street's, you will enjoy. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
I would rate the book between 3 and 4 stars.
The writing was solid, and I liked the writing style. The plot, though, I could not get into. It has very many unlikable characters... unrealistic even (Sam and Beth both)- and it does not seem like any of those characters are 'real'. They act like characters in a 'game'- following the formula/ plot without consciousness- an unwilling player in their own story....
This was the first book I read by the author, and I look forward to reading more from her as I enjoyed the writing and editing- but perhaps not from this series, as I could relate to very few of the characters.
This really made you think twice with all the twist in it and Sam trying to figure out a mystery from 30 years ago. I’ll be checking out the next book for sure .
