What if someone showed you how to capture a moment in a tiny box, standing or sitting right where you are?

Robinson is TikTok famous for little sketches of life around him. You'll be charmed and challenged by his process in this volume. Enjoy it, whether you have never held a paintbrush or you're expanding your repertoire of possibilities.

I've seen Remington's art on social media and love how so much is accomplished and communicated on such a small canvas. This book is geared at more of an advanced-beginner to intermediate, as you need to have some knowledge of the mechanics of oil painting to really understand the techniques used. There is some good all-around content that is not just applicable to miniature plein air paintings: understanding light, selecting your scene, working with a limited pallete, etc.

I’ve seen and admired Remington Robinson’s art on gthe internet and so was excited to see that he now has a book. It was fun to see how he approaches his en plein air miniatures . Definitely a good book to have if you aim to paint small too as an intermediate artist who uses oils.. Not sure about this as a step by step guide for the beginner especially if they use other mediums .

I picked out this book when I was doing assignments from painting classes and found the tips helpful. Some key topics covered in the book include setting up a miniature workspace, selecting scenes, understanding color and light, and effectively capturing the essence of your surroundings. The author takes you through great amount of details on what's going through his mind as he paints.

I’m so in awe with Remington Robinson’s work! & am so incredibly inspired to try oil painting at such a small scale! He doesn’t necessarily teach you how to paint certain things, such as trees. But he does give you a step by step process of how he does a painting & to me, that is just as helpful. I definitely encourage artists of all skill to check out this book!

I am a very lazy painter when it comes to plen air painting. One of the reasons is all those tools and materials that one have to carry, they are plenty, bulky and heavy. This little genial book changes all. You need a mint tin and so everything scales down. Very useful, beautifully illustrated, great invention.

This book shows you everything you need to know from setting up, to traveling, to making your plein air paintings. Now honestly, I don't know if I personally want to work on such a small canvas (Altoids tin), but I can see something a bit larger with ease. Remington offers some great overall painting tips, especially for landscapes, for both beginner and advanced beginners, to go for the feel versus absolute matching look to what you are painting. This would be a really fun summer craft for kids, especially older tween and teens- they can work on plen air paintings while younger siblings are at a playpark, for example. So give this book a look and see what it can teach you this summer!

OMG, the idea of creating a tiny little art kit out of a mint box is fantastic. I wish the author had spent a tiny bit more time elucidating that part (a part of art books that I normally wish was shorter LOL). The rest of the book was full of samples of the author creating beautiful art with his tiny art kit -- each section showed multiple examples of a single work as created with commentary by the artist, along with several samples of similar at the end. The only thing I wish is that there was slightly more generic commentary (vs specific art project commentary) especially on why the author felt each sections was showing an important focus.

This is a fascinating insight into the methods of Mr Robinson to create miniature oil paintings in the outdoors. I’m not an artist, I’m a doodler. And I only use graphite, charcoal, and markers. There’s a part of me that would like to try this way of painting but I’m not sure I actually would do it. There’s a real gift in this way of creating tiny oil paintings using materials that fit in a tin of mints and a single lightweight bag.

It’s excellent being able to follow the whole process through each step. Being able to see how he lays down colour, in which order, and how he uses his tools. The book might not be an instruction manual for a beginner but it’s definitely a useful insight into what can be achieved with a little bit of paint and a lot of talent.

I’ll be looking out for more examples of the author’s work and I may have a go one day. Even if I’m not that good, I’d have fun plus a load of mints to eat.

This book is so cool! I've seen these miniature plein air paintings on Instagram and other social media sites and wanted to learn more about how to make my own. I definitely am going to now. How cool!

Pros: The cover of this book caught my attention because it reminded me of videos I had seen on social media . . . and then I realized the book was by the artist I had seen on social media! I am always impressed with how a seemingly simple set up of a few paint colors and a small canvas turns into a lovely work of art. I loved learning the behind the scenes in this book of setting up your own tin. Although I know my skill set is not developed enough to recreate the projects in this book, I am still inspired by the idea to create art in the outdoors and think this book can be adapted by each reader to their skill set.

Cons: None that I can think of!

Mini Plein Air Painting
With Remington Robinson

I have to confess, I was totally drawn to this by the cover. The content is clearly structured, with helpful tips on getting your “tin” started with minimal tools and easy-to- get materials. There is a brief section on painting technique, with special emphasis on miniature painting, supplemented by a description of the author’s process. Finally, majority of the book covers painting tutorials structured as separate projects, with comprehensive examples. The language is easy to follow, particularly for a beginner. I am looking forward to giving this a try!

My appreciation to NetGalley and to the author/publisher for providing an ARC for review. This is an original, unbiased, independent review.

"Plein air painting" = painting out in the open, fresh air. I'm trying to learn to paint, especially while I'm on my hiking/camping/backpacking trips, so this was helpful!

There is some assumption that you have basic knowledge of painting, so I wouldn't recommend this to the absolute beginner. However, it'd be a great companion for those who want a more portable setup and/or are interested in doing mini-paintings (less expensive, quicker to finish, easier storage if you do a bunch of em', easier to do this more frequently + helps to keep things interesting/improve your ability to color mix more quickly).

The author goes into how to set up your own travel tin for painting, including essentials, bonus items, other helpful supplies to consider, and different painting techniques. I'm trying to do watercolor + he does oil painting, but I think there are skills/processes that will be transferable.
The second part of the book shows beautiful step-by-step painting tutorials starting with just a single color (+ white) to using primary colors + many more. There are nature/landscape paintings as well as urban/architectural

Thank you to the publisher + NetGalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I've been following Remington Robinson's mini plein air paintings on social media for some time now, so I had to pick this up!

This isn't a how-to book. There is the assumption that you already know how to paint, how to choose your brushes and know basic colour theory. What we do learn is how to prepare the materials for plein air painting with oils, and then we get the step by step processes Robinson uses for different scenes: rivers, waterfalls, snow, mountains, urban landscapes and so on.

This book goes into detail about the mechanics of plein air painting - from the blocking techniques, to using monochrome palettes to determine the values in a scene, to atmospheric lighting, and so on, and we are walked through the process from his perspective: why he chose that composition, that colour palette, that order in which to paint. There are sidebars and section breaks outlining the different theories introduced in each chapter, but the main focus is on Robinson's art, which is gorgeous.

This is a useful resource for any painter wishing to do either small-scale art or plein air painting. The book is a treat for the eyes.

I also paint small-scale paintings in tins, but while I Robinson uses oil paints, I am a watercolourist. I hope to be able to transfer many of the techniques introduced in this book to my own painting.

~ Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ~

I still don't think I would be a very good painter, but I really enjoyed the tips and tricks for plein air painting in miniature in this little book.

Remington Robinson has an unusual painting practice: he paints miniatures en plein air using an empty Altoids tin as an easel, palette and storage case. Already popular on TikTok and Instagram, this book shares his work with a wider audience. In it, Robinson describes his process, materials and tools and shares several mini-tutorials using his work as example.

I had not seen his social media presence, so I looked it up and discovered why he has gone viral. His short videos are compelling and a bit quirky, which is just what TikTok audiences eat up. The book, I think, has a different purpose. It is intended for people who want to try to do it themselves. The accessibility of the process, however, is a bit misleading. While most people can have easy access to Altoid tins, only established painters would have (or want to acquire) the specialized paints, brushes, and other necessities he uses. While he explains concepts like perspective and backwash, for example, which would be appropriate for beginners, he works in oil which is one of the more difficult (and expensive) media.

I think this book would be a fun read for painters wishing to shake up their practice a bit, particularly those who have already worked with oils, miniatures, and plein air painting, I won't be trying it, at least not with paints - I can't imagine my hands being steady enough to hold a tin with one hand and paint detail with another. But the book did give me ideas for other media, like ink, colored pencils and even fine tipped markers, that would be more friendly and less messy. And I know other artists who would eat this up, and I will certainly be recommending it to them.

I have reviewed other Quarto books related to art and craft, and have enjoyed every one of them. Thanks to Quarto and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this ARC.

I adore this book and Remington's art is amazing! I travel both for work and leisure quite a bit and always travel with a small vintage cigarello tin of watercolor half pans and my favorite watercolor journal. I cherish the memories and love looking back at my creations!

This is a must read for anyone looking to practice their art on a portable scale and to hone their technique.

5 stars!

Mini Plein Air Painting is a fantastic painting book showing you how to create mini-masterpieces in old altoids tins. I loved how calm the artist/author was in accepting however you want to create your paintings. The information was detailed and helpful, but you felt like there was no pressure to follow along with each step. I will definitely be setting up my painting kit soon!

Thanks to NetGalley, Remington Robinson, and Quarto Publishing for the chance to read & review!
