This book has some great ideas for helping with panic attacks but honestly nobody can understand a panic attack unless they've gone through one. I've suffered from panic attacks for over 40 years and still to this day have them. The book shows success stories from different people but as with panic attacks they are all different. I think that any help a person receives is great just don't expect miracles to happen.
This is a great introduction to polyvagal theory and the way that fight/flight/freeze responses show up in your body and life, with simple exercises to strengthen the connections between the limbus system and the prefrontal cortex. If you've read extensively on trauma and/or polyvagal theory, there will be nothing new here for you. But if you are new to the field or looking for practical, quick exercises you can do to ground your body and shift your state, this will be an excellent resource.
The perfect blend of informative and actionable. A great book to read traditionally beginning to end, but also really useful to keep around as a handy reminder of what to do when panic strikes. One really strong aspect of the book is its clear and simple explanations of some complex physiological processes, helping the reader understand what's going on during panic attacks, not just in the mind but in the body as well. For those (like myself) who are steeped in layperson-accessible information about panic, this book stands out as unique in its combination of the theoretical and practical. The cherry on top is the author's tone, which feels like a really understanding and comforting friend guiding you through things.
