I was in substance abuse treatment over 30 years ago and the important thing is to continue with these kinds of exercises. This is a great workbook with exercises you can do over and over, with questions that can help you as you continue to take your own inventory for a lifetime of healing and fulfillment. I highly recommend this. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.
An in=depth workbook with very good questions which help you really get into an understanding and suggestions that are practical, and helpful.
Substance abuse frequently culminates in profound feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection, which can impede individuals' willingness to seek assistance. Many individuals may turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of numbing emotional distress, inadvertently intensifying feelings of shame and hopelessness. In response to this predicament, a user-friendly workbook based on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is designed to provide practical skills and exercises aimed at disrupting this detrimental cycle. By promoting self-compassion and fostering the development of a support network, individuals can acquire the tools necessary to manage their emotions effectively and cultivate meaningful interpersonal connections. This ultimately facilitates the replacement of addiction with supportive relationships and opportunities for personal growth.
Michael Barnett's workbook emerges as an invaluable resource in the realm of addiction recovery, as it adeptly addresses the emotional triggers that underpin addictive behaviors. It offers lucid guidance and motivates users to engage in self-exploration, thereby aiding them in the development of healthier coping mechanisms. The compassionate framework of the workbook empowers individuals not only to pursue sobriety but also to enhance their emotional resilience and fortify their relationships. While its primary focus is on substance abuse, the principles articulated within the workbook are applicable to a range of compulsive behaviors, rendering it a highly recommended adjunct to therapy for those confronting challenges associated with addiction.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is a great resource for counselors, as well as for those struggling with their own substance abuse issues. The easy to follow workbook explains thoroughly the activities.
I had an ARC of this book as a digital copy. I would DEFINITELY recommend getting a physical copy of this. Not a negative judgement of the book, just a helpful tip for those interested. This journal was very in depth. It had extremely therapeutic questions, that really made me reflect. I think most people could benefit from this book!
Thank you to Netgalley & New Harbinger for early access to The Emotionally Focused Therapy Workbook for Addiction (eARC). As a Substance Use Counselor, there are a lot of activities in this workbook that I would recommend to my patients. I look forward to the hard copy of this workbook coming out next year in order to access the worksheets for professional use. The accompanying digital worksheet downloads are a nice bonus!
As an alcoholic and addict myself, I found a lot of good suggestions in this book. Please give it a try - it may be just the book to help you!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Michael Barnett’s "The Emotionally Focused Therapy Workbook for Addiction" is a valuable resource for individuals struggling with addiction and for therapists or even coaches working with addicted clients. By addressing the emotional underpinnings of addiction, the workbook offers a holistic approach to healing and recovery. Through practical exercises and the application of EFT principles, readers can learn to manage their emotions more effectively, build stronger relationships, and ultimately, break free from the cycle of addiction. This is a useful book and comprehensive guide!
This is a new approach to overcome and handle addiction that I ever read. I want to try to apply it in clinical setting so I can feel the benefit of this emotionally focused therapy workbook.
Addiction of any kind is a tough nut to crack. Any given therapeutic technique - and there must be a dozen - will work for some people, but not others. This book lays out Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT, in workbook form. It's interesting because it insists right up front that addiction solves some painful problems, while creating others. As the author notes, "[Addiction] works...until it doesn't." EFT looks for the root cause of the addiction, and deals with that by developing healthy interpersonal relationships. Highly recommended.
Thank you Netgalley for the gifted copy. This workbook is easy to follow and guides you directly to where you need to be. Following along and learning new things About yourself should give you a sense of peace. This book is great for people struggling and aren't comfortable with chatting with others but the best things you can do is write it down.
