I tried to read and enjoy this book I really did but I just could not get into the writing! I have read books by Daniel Hurst before and enjoyed them, but it was almost like this was written by someone else! He would repeat himself a lot - he kept saying something doesn’t feel right then go on to talk about something else then next paragraph this doesn’t feel right - then again and again. The writing was very methodical and bland. There are also things that the main character does that a nurse would
Not do - she would not hug the patients husband that she literally just met and promise to be a shoulder for him to cry on. She would be more focused on her patient.
Thanks to netgalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy all opinions are mine. Sorry Mr Hurst I like your other books though!
Picture this, you are a nurse and alongside your best-friend/co-worker, venture to a new client and her husband. What first views as a devastating accident, quickly leaves you questioning everything and everyone. You don't know who you can trust.
This book was a ROLLERCOASTER! When I tell you, there is no possible way of figuring out this twist, you deserve a medal if you do! I was surprised to see the big twist occur 50% through (Daniel, I WAS NOT expecting that) and it had me questioning where the story could possibly go.
I loved the intensity of the plot, the drama and constant questioning of all characters.. you simply do not know who to trust in this story.
As a fellow lover of Daniel Hurst' writing, once again he writes a psychological thriller with an enjoyable writing style, with short chapters and fantastic pacing. Better yet, it is the first in a new series of books with this novel THE PERFECT NURSE (#1), releasing on July 1st and The Nurse's Lie (#2) releasing on August 1s this year!
Not to forget that they will also both be available using the kindle unlimited subscription!
It goes as no surprise that I rated this book a 5 stars and highly recommend it.
Let me know if you intend on picking it up! :)
Another fantastic book by Daniel Hurst! It kept me guessing until the very end. This book was a quick read, because i didnt want to put it down, I found myself just wanting to find out what happens next. Wonderful story!
This was a mystery about a nurse who gets in a life-changing car accident. The book has some surprises, over all an interesting read. I wish the characters were developed a bit more, I did not “feel” any of the character’s emotions.
This is such a great and thrilling story! I really enjoyed all of the twists and turns throughout the entire plot. There were plenty of surprises and excitement that kept me from putting the book down. I needed to find out what was going to happen next! I enjoy the authors writing style and found it to be a fast read. I can’t wait to read more from Daniel Hurst!
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc copy of this great book. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Thank you for approving The Perfect Nurse to me as an ARC copy. Daniel Hurst has made yet another book that sucks you in from the beginning. Darcy uncovers a little more than she expected when investigating the new client she was assigned. This book takes you on a suspense adventure between her life and the client she is helping assist at their home.
It was a slow start for me but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down! There were so many twists and turns that it was impossible to figure out. This was my first book by Daniel Hurst and I'm excited to read more!
Okay, first off, I want to say that I feel sad that this is the first book that I have requested on Netgalley. I was super excited about this book. I was hoping for a fast-paced thriller with interesting characters and crazy twists. Instead, I got a story about a 'nurse' who was clearly not supposed to be a nurse anymore or was ever one at all. I was very disappointed by the author's lack of research in the nursing profession. He doesn't seem to know what a nurse actually does. Two nurses to go out to a job that just needs carers? It doesn't make sense. I have worked as a carer and the author basically described my job, not a nurse's job. Secondly, Darcy doesn't act like a nurse at all. The author kept telling me that she is a nurse over and over again but I didn't see it in her actions. Just because you tell me, doesn't mean I will believe it. But maybe that was the point of the story? I'm not sure. I felt that the writing overall wasn't very good. It was repetitive and overwritten at times and I was rolling my eyes at it. I also felt icky about the way a male author was portraying a female character. I'm not saying a man can't write a woman, but not like this. For example, somewhere in the first half of the book, she gets followed by a man. First she assumes that the man thinks she's 'cute' and then when he's literally at her house she turns around and shouts at him?? What?? That sounds great in theory but most women do not feel that brave when they're alone in a deserted street with a man who has followed them. Or maybe I'm just not a very brave woman. Nevertheless, it wasn't believable and I did not enjoy this story.
I have read and enjoyed many Daniel Hurst books but this book seemed a little different to usual. It was slow going at the start which I don't usually find with his books and quite repetitive in places but it didn't take away my enjoyment of the book. I just felt it wasn't one of his better books.
Great book.!! Major twist part way through. Then it was almost like reading a different book. Daniel Hurst never fails to amaze me with his writing.
This felt like a bit of a departure from Daniels hurst's books to date - for one thing that one is based on the other side of the pond, but also there is a new magic in the complexity of the plot and reveal - this book is seriously smart!! Fortunately the author retains all of the entertainment we have come to expect from his writing, the combination of these factors is pure gold - as such I inhaled rather than read this book!!
The 'nurse' we grow to love in this book is Darcy, from the outset she is shrouded in mystery - something seems a bit 'off' with her solitary life, she struggles with sleep, but each day she is awoken by a colleague and tries to pull herself together enough to work a shift in their private nursing job together. Darcy becomes very suspicious of a family she begins to work with - the patient is a woman who suffers extensive brain damage following a fall in her home. Darcy wonders if the husband is hiding something and fears for the safety of her patient. This is a great story in itself, but SO much more happens - this is the epitome of bang for your buck storytelling!
This novel has definitely left it wide open in terms of a sequel - I suspect (and hope) we haven't seen the last of some of these wonderful characters yet!!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this novel in exchange for an advance copy.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is not the first Daniel Hurst book I'm reading and it won't be the last. While it may not be my fave of his books, it was still really enjoyable and I am impatient to read the sequel ! The twists, the ending, everything compels me to read more of her adventures !! Daniel has not disappointed me so far and the more I read his books, the more I'm becoming a fan.
“The Perfect Nurse" by Daniel Hurst is a gripping thriller and page turner. The short chapters and Hurst’s writing style made it easy to read and love the novel. At some times, it was a bit lengthy but besides that I would recommend the book!
Quite a slow start to this book and didn’t feel like a usual Daniel Hurst book that I’ve read before. However, I stuck with it and did end up enjoying it.
The Perfect Nurse, by Daniel Hurst is a suspense-building book about a woman working as an in-home nurse for an affluent family. The wife, a former nurse herself, is experiencing amnesia and difficulty with mobility after a traumatic brain injury- or is she? From the start, main character “Darcy”, has a bad feeling about this family but can’t quite place why. As the days go on, she becomes more and more unsettled by this couple and the lengths they’ll go to, to get what they want.
I really struggled to get into this book initially. I found the first few pages to be repetitive and almost juvenile. I also found it hard to read in an American accent, as they’re in Chicago, but the writing feels British. The terminology and sentence structure is consistent with a setting in Europe, but there was no suggestion that the characters were originally from anywhere but Chicago.
Once I got into the story, I did find the suspense building and the desire to get to the end increasing. I would consider this more of a popcorn thriller in that you could see the twists lining up as the chapters progressed.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and was eager to find out how it ended. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
3.5/5
This was really interesting and promising at first. As a nurse, I found it relatable at times even. However, I felt like the story was spoiled or ruined after the big reveal at around 56% when Darcy found out who she really is. I kinda felt that reveal did it for me. I felt like it should have been done towards the end? Idk it might just be me. I just started losing interest after that. The story was pretty predictable after that BIG reveal in the middle.
Thank you so much for letting me read this! Still enjoyed my second book from this author 😃
This is a slow starting story that really picks up speed as the twist is revealed. Two nurses are called in to assist a man whose wife has had a bad fall. and memory lapse. Darcy has an eerie feeling that something isn't right with the couple, but she can't figure out what it is. She does some snooping which intensifies the creepy feeling she has. Then things change as the story really unfolds. It was not one of my favorite Daniel Hurst books, but I enjoyed it and would happily recommend it.
3.5 stars.
Plot twists i never saw coming. I really enjoyed the writing style. I did find parts slightly repetitive but that's just personal preference. Will be picking up more daniel hurst books in future as i really enjoyed!
Thankyou to NetGalley, the publisher and Daniel Hurst for allowing me to read this ARC.
I have read every Daniel Hurst book and there is not on book that I have not enjoyed!
Daniel Hurst in my opinion is a master of creating a storyline which keeps you engaged, on the edge of your seat and makes you lose sleep by not wanting to stop reading, as very often each chapter leaves you with a cliff hanger that makes you want to keep reading!
This was definitely a binge read!
I love how Hurst creates unique storyline’s which always make it hard for you to guess what is going to happen, but often you think you have figured it out then all of a sudden you get whip lash and a twist is revealed that you didn’t see coming and leaves you reeling!
I love stories about Nurses as being one myself I find them exciting!
Daniel Hurst has delivered again as he always does and I love this title and will recommend it to everyone of my fellow bookworms!
If you are looking for a story that is unique, engaging, mystery, suspense and twists you done see coming this book is for you!
I have been loving the mini series that Hurst has been doing and cannot wait for the next installment in this series!!!
Thanks so much and until next time!
5/5 stars but this deserves more!
First off, thank you Netgalley for this arc. This book was full of twists that will leave your head spinning. It did start off slow but it ramped up the thrills as it went.
Darcy and Pippa are nurses for a private company. They are sent to work for the wealthy married couple Scarlett and Adrian. Scarlett took a nasty fall and is now suffering from memory loss. Things don't sit well with Darcy and she becomes suspicious, so she starts digging into these people's lives. What she finds is shocking. So grab the book and find out what she knows for yourself. Worth the read for sure. I haven't found a Daniel Hurst book that isn't good.
