Loved this book! It was silly and swoony and incredibly fun to read. My only note is that the storyline with Griffin coming back to life felt extremely rushed, to the point that I almost quit reading. I'm glad I stuck it out, because it just kept getting better from there.
Emily, an art conservator at The Art Institute of Chicago, has been through the ringer with an unfaithful ex-husband and unexpectedly finds connection and purpose with the medieval statue she has been assigned to work on.
Griffin was delightful, and such a swoon-worthy character with honor and genuine charm. I absolutely fell in love with him and enjoyed his grace and antics as he acclimated to modern day culture in Chicago. Emily was relatable in some of her struggles and insecurities, and the dynamic of her and Griffin’s relationship was steamy and such a sweet, fantastical tale.
It was a delightful read that was well written and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I quite look forward to reading a sequel someday!
Thank you NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC!
I really wanted to like this. The premise was so cute, but the writing was very juvenile and spent too much time describing non important characters.
Her Knight at the Museum by Bryn Donovan is absolutely a whimsical fun romance.
If you've ever watched Night at the Museum, you will love this book. Emily has been through divorce, works at a museum restoring art at a museum in Chicago when a statue comes to her and feels this odd connection with him but surprise, he's a living soul trapped in stone and when they break the curse, a real life knight comes to life. I love the fantasy element in a modern world and seeing how Griffin adapts to the current world after being from another century and lifetime. I loved how sweet and swoon he was. The way he adored Emily was so adorable. It broke my heart seeing how Emily saw herself and the way Griffin assured her that he only had eyes for her and the way she has to basically teach him everything all while falling for each other and wondering how this can possibly work? All while the city is on high alert trying to find the missing statue and trying to avoid jail. This story is romantic, steamy, sweet, funny and all while keeping you on pins and needles to see how it's going to turn out. I thought this was such a fun and heartwarming story. I laughed, smiled, and rooted for them and felt for Griffin trying to adapt to his new reality and how life in modern world is going to be for him. This story is so much fun and perfect for romance readers that love a swoony chivalrous man in real life. I cannot recommend this book enough.
(3.5/5 rounded up) - Unexpectedly, it's adorable!! I think I knew I would like this as a brain candy read, and that's exactly what it was. What I'm really hoping is that Donovan continues this series, but we get to see more of the organization Emily's boss is a part of that takes care of these slightly magical objects throughout the globe.
**Thank you to Berkley & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
This was a very wholesome read from the perspective of the relationship alone. The world and circumstances could use a bit more fine-tuning.
The logic behind how he gets unstatued does not make a lick of sense to me. I had to reread it at least 4 times and I still do not for the life of me understand the mental acrobatics it would take to make that make sense.
There's also the glaring issue of communication and someone who *should* know better constantly failing to describe things. I found myself constantly at odds with the protagonist and her decision to omit information from an already confused, displaced in time knight.
There is a lack of consistent narrative motion. This story can be broken down into segments that feel inefficiently connected. I can see all the individual pieces but cannot understand how they make a coherent whole.
Griffin though, is the saving grace of this romance. What a good golden retriever guy without it being constantly overstated.
This fluffy read had just enough emotional turmoil to keep it from floating away. A charming romance with characters who actually act pretty reasonably (sometimes the suspension of disbelief it takes to believe a plot-driving behavior is more than what it takes to accept a cursed knight coming to life and happily living in the modern age). The ending is a bit weird - I don't think the final act with the armor was necessary. Overall, quite enjoyable!
This was a cute romance with lots of spice and humor. My favorite parts were Griffin's shenanigans as he tried to adapt to modern day vocabulary and customs.
I struggled a bit with the investigation aspect as it felt unrealistic and only seemed to come up whenever a conflict was needed. I would have loved to see that flushed out more as I think it would have added to the overall drama of the plot.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and would recommend it.
I received an ARC through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely ADORE this book! This was the third ARC I read so far and it did not disappoint! When I explained the premise to some of my bookstore coworkers, they chuckled and I told them it’s one of the cutest stories I’ve read this year! For anyone who’s dreamed about a knight in shining armor on a white horse, this is the book for you. This book is also for you if you love medieval history, courtly love, medieval chivalry, or if you love going to Medieval Times to watch a good show with good food (though Hubster would argue my food is better after the one time I made a copycat feast during Covid lol). Emily and Griffin have to be the sweetest couple I’ve come across in my reading—cute, bespectacled historian & restoration specialist and former chivalrous, proud knight. I’m very happy to say that this may be the most wholesome rom-com and overall romance I’ve ever read with a sunshine X sunshine trope and I enjoyed it immensely 🥰. I thought I had already read my one wholesome romance for the year. I’m glad to be wrong and have a chance to read a second one 😊
Overall… 4 ⭐️ for the story itself (so sweet!), 2 🌶️ for the spice factor (also very sweet given Griffin’s… ahem… experience 🫠). Her Knight at the Museum comes out on November 12th and I can’t wait to get my physical copy for my little library!
This story was a delight from start to finish. As a history buff I've always enjoyed visiting museums and historical spaces. I've often wondered what a piece of art would say if it could talk. This story brings history to life with a funny and engaging story.
I was definitely beyond amused and delighted by the shenanigans that took place in this book. There were a few questions that I have that weren't answered, a couple of nit-picky things that could just be me. The story was different, endearing, and overall a fun time.
This was a delightful read! Not only was it very well written, but it was also intelligently written. The story was quite engaging, and unfolded at a nice pace. I greatly appreciated the amount of research the author did on medieval English culture and customs which gave the protagonist Emily Porter’s love interest considerable authenticity. Additionally, since Emily works as an art conservator, the author had to research the tasks associated with that occupation. Despite the fantasy aspect of the novel, the characters and their behavior was all very believable. I think anybody who enjoys romance novels will have their heart strings tugged by “My Knight at the Museum”.
This book was so much fun to read! Bryn Donovan did an excellent job of delivering a heartfelt story full of swoonworthy romance, humor, and well-developed characters that readers will find themselves rooting for from page 1.
Emily Porter is sweet, humble, and caught in an impossible situation when the statue of a medieval knight she's restoring comes to life. Coming off a bad divorce and trying to rebuild her professional life, the last thing Emily needs is all eyes on her as the primary suspect in the missing statue. But how can she resist her very own knight in shining armor sweeping her off her feet?
Cursed and turned into stone, Griffin de Beauford, once a revered knight, has spent centuries trapped as a statue who can hear, feel, and see but cannot talk or move. However, all that changes when the fair Emily Porter begins to hear his thoughts. While holding a magical stone gifted to her by a friend, Emily kisses him and years of isolation crumble restoring him to life in an amazing and confusing modern world. His gratitude and adoration for Emily knows no bounds, yet finding their happily-ever-after is a road filled with obstacles and unexpected twists.
Readers who love steamy romance will appreciate the sizzle Bryn brings to life on the page. For those who prefer less spice such as myself, you can skim the more detailed parts without missing a beat. There's so much to love about this story I recommend it to everyone!
Emily, a medieval art expert and conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago, is thrilled when a statue of an English knight from the 1400s is added to the museum’s collection. However, she begins to question her sanity when she starts hearing the statue speak to her and even has vivid dreams of him.
But then Emily’s dreams come true and Sir Griffin magically comes to life, explaining to her that he was cursed hundreds of years ago and cast into stone. Their instant and undeniable attraction only grows more intense when she takes him home and helps him adjust to this modern world. But their whirlwind love faces constant misunderstandings rooted in their different time periods leading to doubts about their future together. And the fact that the FBI is investigating her for art theft after his statue mysteriously disappeared only puts further strain on them.
This whimsical romance is a mix of sweet and steamy with laugh-out-loud moments throughout, making it eminently entertaining from page one. With fantastical elements that are balanced with real world storylines and a Chicago setting, this novel has broad appeal.
This review is for an uncorrected proof. I have been waiting years for this book after reading a snippet of a work in progress on the author’s website. This is a light-hearted, whimsical story and one should not expect any deep and meaningfuls. This is escapism, pure and simple. Because I had that view in mind, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was absolutely bonkers, but in the way only a super cute rom-com can be. I nearly laughed out loud several times at poor Griffin doing his damnedest to fit in, and I loved not exactly knowing how things would turn out (aside from the happy ending both Emily and Griffin deserved!)
If you're looking for a fun, escapist romp with historical drama galore, the sights and sounds of Chicago, and an adorably named pup, this is the romance for you.
(Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.)
This story was so well written, I found myself shaking my head in silent awe and appreciation SEVERAL times. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a steamy romcom with so many feelings and so much to root for. The ‘rom’ sizzles, and the ‘com’ is on point––I laughed out loud throughout.
Cursed by a mortal enemy, Griffin de Beauford is sentenced to eternity as a stone statue––but he can feel, see, hear, and even visit people in their dreams. He ends up at a Chicago museum under Emily Porter’s care as she struggles to pick up the pieces after a difficult divorce, not the least of these pieces being her professional career. If she can just do a good job with the symposium and restoration, she might be able to come on full-time and gain a little more financial stability in her life. Just before her witchy friend Rose gifts her a magic stone, Emily begins to hear Griffin’s thoughts, and even dreams of him (I won’t give too much away, there!), and a day later, holding the stone, Emily kisses Griffin’s statue, because what the heck, amirite? Griffin comes to life, eternally devoted to his lady Emily, endearingly unacquainted with the modern world, and with plenty of swoonworthy, knight-like language to color Emily’s world a new shade of romance. But a rowdy man barging out of the conservation lab wearing medieval armor––not to mention a now missing statue––happens to be a humongous problem, and Emily feels all eyes and iphones are on her as she hides Griffin, and his armor, in her small Chicago apartment. Things heat up both in the bedroom and later in the boardroom, as the FBI questions the conservationists. Emily isn’t sure there’s a safe way out of this, but she knows she’s no thief–– unless you count the handsome son of an earl sleeping in her bed as stolen property!
With excellent character development, genuine surprises, plot twists, and laugh-out-loud moments, Bryn Donovan delivers an emotional, uplifting, and inspiring love story, that’s also a love letter to Chicago. I was rooting for Griffin, feeling so bad for him being trapped as a statue, and I was cheering on Emily as her insecurities gave way to her HEA. Even though I don’t read sex scenes (I skim a few parts in order to skip them––personal choice), there is PLENTY to love for “wholesome” readers like myself, and for those who love the steam, I’m sure they’ll relish the long, detailed depictions of Emily’s encounters with Griffin! All in all, I’m overjoyed to give this book five well-earned stars. You will not be disappointed if you pick this one up!
Took me a little bit of time to get into but it was a fun read, I really enjoyed the entire book. I appreciate being able to read this book
I am always here for a silly goofy time which this was but it was also unfortunately pretty poorly written. The characters felt flat and underdeveloped and the plot felt haphazard and the final third was particularly rushed.
Emily is an art conservator in Chicago and in charge of a new piece that’s just arrived: a statue of a knight, a very realistic and unique statue. She begins to hear him in her head and eventually, in her dreams, which prove to be quite spicy. Turns out our knight Griffin is cursed and has been trapped via magic since medieval times, and a kiss from Emily sets him free.
Really and truly, the premise of this book is nothing short of ridiculous, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It was silly and slightly steamy, and even though the basics of the plot were flimsy, it worked. I definitely think this is the sort of book one reads in a sitting or two, especially if you’re looking for a Hallmark movie with a little spice. I think Griffin’s old-world charm is adorable, Emily has a fun job, and there’s a bit of intrigue when the art world wants to know where the statue went. I think this could be set up for additional novels, which I would undoubtedly read, as the end of the book sets up a potentially different arc for Emily. It's a fun summertime read for sure!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
