I work in a local quilt shop and this book caught my attention. I’m a fan of jewel tone fabrics and colorful patterns so the selection of quilts in this book was ideal for my future projects. It is well written and quilt instructions are easy to follow. I look forward to making a few of these designs.

Following Sarah's instructions was a joy! I loved how easy she made it to experiment with my own color choices while still maintaining a cohesive design. Her tips on color saturation and value really opened my eyes to new possibilities. The book is full of flexible techniques, allowing quilters to personalize their projects while also covering essential skills like patchwork, curves, and paper piecing.

Some of my favorite features of the book include the clear, step-by-step instructions, the variety of techniques (especially for both English and foundation paper piecing), and the freedom to adapt the designs to suit my own preferences. It’s a fantastic resource for quilters looking to push their creativity while learning from a master!

The quilts are gorgeous, colorful and fun. I’m not sure making them would be quite as much fun.

Thomas gives us a few quick pages on color theory, including monochromatic and analogous colors. Tools, including rotary cutters, sewing machine, fabric, thread, washi tape, and of course a seam ripper are touched upon in the next 6 pages. Basic piecing techniques are covered with photos in another quick six pages. This includes a mention of English paper piecing and foundation piecing. This is not a book for beginners! (Even though some quilts are rated for beginners.)

While you can use things you have on hand, the author recommends using fabric from ‘an already-curated collection’ for the quilts in the book. She suggests reading through the complete instructions first. I have made several quilts and could not follow her directions because of color and technique complexities. Therefore, I’d rate these at an Intermediate to advanced level. In the Loominous quilt (Beginner level!) over 200 white squares are cut, not counting 320 navy squares and large amounts of colored squares which need to be laid out in proper order to achieve the correct pattern. Funfetti, another ‘beginner level’ strip quilt uses jelly roll cuts – but the quilter needs to keep track of over 30 colors. Other quilts are rated for the confident beginner. (I’m already intimidated – or not patient enough.)

This book offers some lovely patterns and uses vibrant colors well. It is just not (in my basic quilting experience) for beginners, even though some are labeled as such.

I think this is a great book for anyone who does quilting and wants to focus a little more on adding more color to them!

At the beginning of the book I love that the author goes into some of the color theory to help understand placing colors together. She talks about things like, hue, tint and shade. She also spends a bit of time talking about the color wheel and some color theory in regards to it. I am already familiar with this due to other arts that I partake in but I know many quilters aren't really overly familiar with the color wheel and I think it can be helpful in quilting!

The book it self is nicely written with lots of helpful details. Towards the beginning she goes over many of the important details for quilting itself & It is full of images to help guide the steps. She puts the same detail and attention into each of the quilt patterns that she has in the book. It is really a wonderful book for quilters. The quilt patterns ranged from beginner to advanced so here is something there for everyone no matter what level you are at!

Rainbow fabric collections are wildly popular and widely available; I probably have at least half a dozen strip sets, a couple of layer cakes, and a couple of fat quarter collections that are arranged in rainbow order. They’re so enticing to pick up! And now, here’s a book full of patterns to make it just as easy to turn them into beautiful finished projects.

What could be a better baby gift than a rainbow quilt? Or a “round number” birthday, or a wedding, or significant anniversary, or any kind of celebration. Or, possibly, consolation for a friend’s pet “passing over the rainbow bridge”. We make quilts to console as well as to celebrate.

There are 15 projects in this beautifully presented book. But first, the author reviews color theory and presents techniques: straight patchwork, curves, applique, paper piecing (foundation and English). I understand the basics of color theory but the author goes into the psychology behind certain color uses. She also mentions that using rainbow hues naturally achieves that goal, as she says our eye naturally follows the ROYGBIV color order. Neutrals also have their role, as they give the eye a place to rest.

The author discusses the color wheel and how to use it for color selection and placement. And for every pattern shown, she offers an alternative view of it in a less-rainbow-centric color palette as well as, often, two layout options of the rainbow blocks. (The rainbow projects are all solids and tone-on-tone; the alternatives may be large prints, geometrics, etc. Less pure color.). Some also offer a second pattern (layout) which may be made with the same units as those constructed for the original pattern. I really enjoyed having multiple layout and coloration options presented for each pattern. I particularly enjoyed her use of layer cakes, not only strips.

The Twinkle quilt shown is particularly creative. I also appreciated the photo of the finished quilt blocks for this pattern – I love quilting but I find geometry very challenging so it was extra-helpful to have a clear pic of some completed blocks, so I could compare my progress along the way. I also appreciated the “medallion quilt pattern, Sweet Tooth, as the borders progressively increased in saturation and value.

The photography in the book is gorgeous and makes me want to make all the quilts! I’m having trouble deciding which to do first. (A great “problem” to have.)

This book is amazing! It is so detailed and colorful. This is the perfect quilting book for someone, like me, who needs all the steps and visuals to be able to fully understand and grasp what needs to be done! Rainbow Quilt is the perfect quilting book for someone who wants to move past simple square quilt patterns.

Great book full of helpful tips and multiple patterns! I love when quilts are colorful and this is a super helpful way to achieve that. The intro to color theory and multiple examples give a great place to start off and make your own rainbow quilt. Looking forward to making one soon!

So many stunning patterns in this book if you like your blankets bright and colourful! I have made a few of the pattern and they were easy to follow and enjoyable to make!

If you love quilts with bright colours, this book will be right up your alley, but even if not, alternative colourways in more muted fabrics are given as well. The patterns in this book use a variety of techniques including traditional piecing, curved piecing, foundation paper piecing, English paper piecing, and applique. An introduction chapter provides instructions and tips for each technique. The patterns are the highlight of the book, however. Each pattern uses a rainbow of colours to its maximum effect combined with a variety of techniques to expand your skills and keep things interesting. The final pattern is a spectacular medley of motifs from the rest of the patterns in the book.

This had an overview of color theory and mostly patterns for beginner quilters (and a couple for intermediate ones). I did appreciate that each quilt was shown with an alternate color palette (with a few patriotic/American options, if you're into that). I think some of the quilts utilized rainbows better than others. But this could be useful for a beginner who doesn't know where to start.

As a long time quilter and follower of Sarah Thomas, I enjoyed reading this inspiring take on quilting and color theory. The photography is absolutely beautiful and the patterns are well planned and easy to follow. I'd love to have a copy on my shelf permanently to refer back to in the future!

Rainbow Quilt Color Method is a well written colorful illustrated tutorial guide with patterns by Sarah Thomas. Due out 8th July 2024 from Fox Chapel on their Landauer imprint, it's 128 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This book is upbeat and accessible and contains a really good introduction to the fundamentals of color theory and how to arrange/categorize the quilter's stash into usable/choosable palettes. The author also includes a good overview of tools and supplies she uses in her process, what the items do, and how to use them effectively.

The patterns are all modern and really gorgeous. There's a reinterpreted fan, an Amish style single panel, lattice, broken dish, some simpler churn dash type blocks (but all are original in some ways) and all bring something fresh and new.

Each quilt tutorial includes a skill level estimate (none are outside the abilities of a careful beginner with a goodly amount of patience), fabric estimates, tools and supplies, tips and suggestions, full color layouts, and templates. The included photographs are clear, in color, and unobstructed. The author makes use of bundles and jelly-rolls, but also includes fabric yardages for readers who cut their own fabric. Layout and cutting diagrams are included (and very useful).

Five stars. This would be an excellent choice for public or secondary school library acquisition, home use, maker's groups, fibrearts guilds and similar uses. Excellent for quilters and crafters who need to freshen up their color theory.

There are so many delightful quilts I want to make in this book. They are colourful, fun and even a little bit whimsical. each quilt is unique and has well-written and visual instructions and templates.

The creator of this book makes it clear how terms will be abbreviated so there is no mistaking the next step.

It's a wonderful treat of colour and many hours of fun sewing to be had ahead.

Rainbow Quilt Color Method includes a short introduction to color theory, a tools and materials section, and 15 quilt patterns ranging in skill from beginner to advanced intermediate.

Although the color theory section is called The Rainbow Method, it covers basic color theory. The book covers multiple quilting techniques: basic piecing, curved piecing, English Paper Piecing, Foundation Paper Piecing, and applique. Each technique is introduced with tips included in the pattern instructions using that method. At first, I found the amount of information overwhelming, but as I went through the patterns, I found it helpful to have those sections to refer back to.

The tools and materials section is thorough and includes both essential items and a few nice-to-haves. The quilts featured in the book are beautiful, and each pattern is well-written with instructions that should be read through before starting. I am usually a jump-right-in kind of gal, but I recommend taking your time. Each pattern includes easy-to-read diagrams and an example of the pattern using an alternate color method. The last pattern, Sweet Tooth Medallion, is a culminating project that includes all of the techniques used in other patterns. Additionally, templates for each pattern are included at the end of the book.

I would not recommend this book for beginners. It's more suitable for intermediate beginners who want to explore various techniques. However, even advanced-level quilters will find challenges in each pattern. Overall, I think this book would be a great addition to any quilting library.

Rainbow Quilt Color Method : Learn the Art of Creating Multicolor and Monotone Quilts with 15 Modern Patterns. This is a bright and colour book full of creative and up to date projects. The information is so clear that even a beginner could do them. There is information on how to choose fabrics and designs, and any of the projects could be adapted to your own style. I loved the quilt names and the vibrant colours. Perfect as a gift book for a crafter.

This book has a lovely collection of 15 quilts to make, all with a combinations of rainbow colors, which make light and fresh style quilts. More modern than the traditional dark and floral, the patterns are similar, but make a lovely change.
The information and instruction are really easy to follow and making some of the blocks are detailed. The quilts are not hard to make and would suit a beginner to an experienced quilt maker.. Photos are great as are the patterns and templates. . Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR
