Rating: 4 Stars
I recently had the pleasure of reviewing Creepy Kitchen: 60 Terror—rific Recipes That'll Possess Your Palette by Kim Kindelsperger, and let's just say, this cookbook is a whole vibe! Seriously, if you love Halloween (or just enjoy a good fright any time of year), this book is right up your alley.
A Quick Peek Inside

Think sausage biscuit brains and vampire bites that are as fun to make as they are to eat! And the best part? You can whip these up for any occasion, not just spooky season.
From appetizers to desserts and even some creepy Christmas recipes, this book has you covered. Each recipe comes complete with easy-to-follow instructions, making it a breeze to recreate these frightfully delicious dishes in your own kitchen. Plus, the illustrations are such a fun touch—they really bring the recipes to life!
My Thoughts on the Book
First off, flipping through Creepy Kitchen was just plain fun! The illustrations are super cute and add so much character to the book. I mean, who doesn't want a cookbook that looks like it jumped straight out of a Halloween party? Each dish has such creative names that make you chuckle while you're cooking.
I loved how simple and straightforward the recipes are; they make cooking feel less daunting and more like a spooky adventure. The back of the book is also a goldmine, packed with tips on how to host your own creepy gathering—definitely a plus for those of us who love throwing themed parties!
Now, while the illustrations are adorable and add a quirky charm, I do wish there were actual photos of the finished dishes. I think seeing real food would have made my mouth water even more! But hey, the creativity still shines through.
Overall, Creepy Kitchen is a frightfully delightful cookbook that's perfect for anyone who loves all things spooky—be it for Halloween or just because you want to spice up your dinner routine. I could definitely see this book making an awesome gift for fellow spooky lovers. So if you're looking to dive into some deliciously creepy cooking, grab a copy and get ready to possess your palette!

A wonderfully fun book for someone who has a creepy side. There are fun facts scattered throughout the read that will fill your head with tidbits of trivia. The recipes are definitely a treat for those who like to add a bit of the macabre to the table. These treats aren't just for Halloween, you can add a bit of your creepy side to other holidays such as Christmas or Valentines. I always enjoy making foods that look like something else and bringing a bit of fun to the dining experience. You can make them playful for the kids or a bit scary for the adults. I look forward to trying some of these goodies in the upcoming holidays!

This cookbook includes dozens of good recipes for dishes that guests will want to eat, and cooks will want to prepare. They include a good variety of dishes, and many of the ingredients are perfect for fall cooking and baking. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions so that the dishes turn out perfectly. The author has given names to the dishes that are supposed to be clever, but to my mind are stupid and un-relatable; some don’t make sense, and some aren’t Halloween related. Another problem with the book is that there are no photographs of the dishes. There are illustrations, and they are excellent and well done, but a themed book, especially for Halloween, needs to have real photos of the dishes so party planners can anticipate how their finished dishes will look, and those readers perusing the book will want to make the dishes.
All told, this isn’t the best Halloween book out there. It does have some good ideas and recipes that readers will want to make, but it misses the mark as to clever Halloween ideas and names of the dishes.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Creepy Kitchen is an illustrated cookbook filled with fun recipes for any time of the year, not just October and Halloween.
I loved the creativity of the names of the dishes, and each one is simple and easy to follow and make. The back of the book has a useful how-to guide filled with information and tips about hosting a gathering or event, too. The book is illustrated beautifully, but I did wish there were some actual photos of some of the dishes even if they had been printed at the back of the book or even a QR code to see them online would have been an amazing touch for those of us who love an actual photo too. I look forward to making some of these fun and tasty sounding dishes soon.
I love those fun and adventurous cookbooks that really take you by surprise. Add in a Halloween theme and you have perfection. I loved this cookbook. We are a Halloween all year family and this book was perfect for that. It has 60 recipes or all year long with everything from appetizers to dessert and fun drinks too. I loved the creative ideas for Christmas and Valentines day too. You can find some fun for kids and even those spicier ideas for the adults too. I found my favorites like the Phases of the Moon Hand Pies and Haunted Hot HOt Chocolate. Beautiful illustrations created the perfect picture to get you ready for some creepy treats. You will love this book. I received it as an ebook ARC but I will be adding to our own cookbook collection and gifting to some friends. Enjoy the fun.
“Creepy Kitchen,” by Kim Kindelsperger
This was a super cute cookbook. I loved the art for the food, but I do wish there was realistic food pictures to go along with the drawings, but aesthetically the book just being art was cute. It has a variety type of food like drinks, snacks, appetizers, desserts, and main dishes. I really loved how it was not only Halloween themed food but also spooky Christmas food and spooky Valentine’s food, etc. All the dishes look super easy to do and you don’t need to be a professional chef to make these foods. Can’t wait to make a few dishes this year during the holidays. Worth reading, worth trying the recipes, and worth having this as one of the cookbooks in the home, especially if you have children like mine who love all things spooky. 4 out of 5 stars.
Thank you for the ARC, Netgalley.
This is a real collectible recipe book. From the front cover that looks like a traditional fairy tale to the depiction of the magically spooky recipes, this book is a practical work of art. On top of that, all the recipes are very accessible and not fantasy foods thought up to invent a new world.
The format is beautifully clear with the artwork by Kitty Willow Wilson the dominant feature. They accompany the recipes in a most delightful way making it an enjoyable experience just to flick through the book.
As for the recipes, they are simple and tasty and suitable for everyone whether it is a children's party at Halloween or adults in the cold winter months. One advantage of making spooky food shapes is that it encourages children to eat more vegetables! Includes recipes for three courses plus drinks.
I haven't tried everything yet but I did enjoy the Great Pumpkin Curry Soup and the All Souls' Potatoes very much. Not too far away from the foods we eat already, nothing outlandish, but the presentation makes them all the more interesting. Also encourages a few more family members to try their hand at cooking instead of just leaving it to Mum and Dad.
This would make a wonderful gift to those who like to entertain or have themed dinner parties. Or for folk who like to have artistic or spooky books around. Recommended: such a lovely book.
This book was frightfully delightful!!! Perfect for Halloween or just cuz spooky dinners! I do wish there were pictures instead of illustrations but the illustrations are cute.
Adorable cookbook perfect for those who celebrate Halloween year-round! It's full of recipes for new cooks and experiences kitchen chefs alike, and has tons of illustrations. I will definitely be buying a physical copy.
Creepy Kitchen is a nice collection of spooky dishes with recipes by Kim Kindelsperger. Due out 6th Aug 2024 from Quarto on their Rock Point imprint, it's 160 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is an adorable illustrated collection with "creepy" whimsically themed recipes. They're grouped in chapters: starters, sides, mains, sweets & desserts, several holiday themed chapters (Christmas, Valentines, notably no Hallowe'en specific ones), and tutorials and how-to.
Recipes include an intro (with media tie-in information), bullet list of tools and supplies as well as ingredients, and step by step directions. Ingredients are given in imperial (American) measurements, with metric measures in parentheses (yay!). Ingredients will be easily obtainable from any moderately well stocked grocery store in North America.
The book has no photography. It's charmingly illustrated in color throughout by Kitty Willow Wilson.
Four stars. These are appealing and tasty recipes, with a cute schtick. It's a niche book, but fun and well done. The recipes are basic; none are overly complex. It would be nicefor a movie-night tie in gathering with friends, or a casual party. This might also be a nice choice for folks who spend time with youngsters (child minders, grandparents, older siblings, etc) to have some fun in the kitchen, and then eat the results.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

There are some neat recipes! I like that there are creepy fun recipes for holidays other than Halloween. The art is cute but I wish there has been actual pictures of the food. I use these as a guideline of what my food should look like.
I didnt get to try any of the recipes but i found most of this book adorable. Plus the recipes sounded delicious. Although i prefer my food images to be realistic not cartoon like in this one.
I really liked the cute illustrations in this cookbook (though some photos of the creations would have been nice too). This is the kind of book I'd want on display in my kitchen even when I'm not using it.
I liked that there's a few cocktail recipes in this book, which would be great for parties. I love the idea of an apple mimosa - simple but wonderfully seasonal (although I'm not sure you'd want honey all around the rim of your glass). The pumpkin spiced lattes also look delicious!
The fun little halloween facts dispersed throughout the book are great.
This book makes me want to throw a Halloween party, however a lot of the recipes - particularly the mains - would be great for any time of year.
Creepy Kitchen in an awesome cookbook filled with recipes themed around Spooky Season! It also took recipes for Christmas and Valentine's Day and made them spooky themed! I’m looking forward to trying most of the recipes, but I’m really looking forward to trying the Shark Bite Sipper Drink recipe! This is a great quick cookbook, filled with spooky illustrations and lots of Halloween Fun!
I love a good themed cooking book, but that one surprised me, in different ways. The vibe is very juvenile and kid friendly, but once you open you get a lot of alcoholic beverage receipes and quite difficult dishes to accomplish. Some of them are cool and new but a lot of them are the kind of things you get to find for free on the internet. So I must admit I have mixed feelings. I love the cute illustrations, and there are some of the reciepes I want to try, but overall... I wouldn't buy it.
Creepy Kitchen Is one of those cookbooks you pick up because it looks cute and fun. I will have to try some of these recipes when spooky season comes around because not only are there side dishes and snacks but there is even a variety of drink options to try. I am going to have to pick up a few copies for myself and a few of my friends. The dinner roll recipe will probably be a staple for all of October and maybe even thanksgiving so festive, simple and cute
This book was so cute! The illustrations were beautiful and definitely what caught my eye. I do wish however that they had included actual photos of the food.
But the recipes looked yummy and easy to follow. Thank you netgalley for an earc of this book.
I absolutely cannot wait for this book to come out so I can buy one. There’s so many tasty looking recipes while also being creepy and cute. A staple book to own if you love creepy and you love baking/cooking
Cute recipes, I love the art. I might try a few of the recipes since none are super complicated. The theme is a lot of fun.
