Entertaining, fast paced after about 40%.
Book includes a lot of gore, pretty much off the bat.
I did not relate to the characters in the book but I felt as if I was watching a movie.
Family is on the run. There is cheating. A lot of driving.
Good thriller book.
This novel is a re-release of intense apocalyptic must-read fiction, a pivotal self-published treasure. In a retro, Night of the Comet fashion, curious humans who witness a breathtaking display of northern lights are transformed into homicidal maniacs who wreak havoc and seek to destroy those who were not altered. The scariest part of this already horrifying situation is that they look normal while knowing a target on sight. No one is to be trusted. Jack and Dee are a couple on the run with their two children, Cole and Naomi, desperately searching for refuge anywhere and everywhere. The country and possibly the world are now under attack by Individuals who have turned violent against the ones who did not experience the enlightenment provided by the momentary phenomenon. What will hold significance when all the unimportant is stripped from your world, and survival in a wasteland is the only task at hand? What will you be willing to do to avoid death and protect the ones you love?
Be warned that this author doesn’t hold back on the realities of an apocalyptic type event . . . this novel has gory heart-pounding intensity. I know it’s fiction, but it did give me a new perspective of what it must be like to experience the culling involved in acts of genocide. Prepare to be disturbed.
I highly recommend this book for fans of horror or suspenseful dystopian fiction.
I thank NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of Run for my unbiased evaluation. 4.5 stars
I love Blake Crouch. He is one of the most talented writers I’ve read. Run is an earlier work of his and it was done very well. The only problem I had with it is it was too short. And I wanted more details. It wasn’t enough for me but I’m hoping for a book 2? How about it Blake? This was also a perfect for Halloween-October read. It gave me that walking dead vibe and had all the good things in it like mystery, scare and terror of survival. Thanks to the publisher via NetGalley.
I am sorry to say that RUN isn’t for me. I had a hard time finishing it: not only was it repetitive, but I didn’t connect with any of the characters and, in fact, found them grating.
That being said, RUN is an extremely fast paced thriller with short, punchy chapters that end on cliffhangers, which should keep people reading. The premise is interesting and engaging: the world is falling apart and violence reins. Jack’s name has been called on the Emergency Broadcast System as a person who should be killed, so he goes on the run with his family.
I understand this is one of Blake Crouch’s earlier efforts and I didn’t enjoy it the way I did his more recent novels, including Dark Matter, Upgrade, and especially Recursion (one of my favorite books!).
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/Ballantine Books for the chance to read an ARC of RUN in exchange for my honest feedback.
Thank you for this ARC read. It was a perfect choice for the spooky season. However the whole book I was confused it had a lot of jumping point of views to find out what the plot is about. I was very fast pace as I was ready to find it what the heck is going on. Begins with a strange man coming to his ex house as the family is packing up for a trip and just gets creeper and strange as the story goes.
Run by Blake Crouch was a fantastic dystopian thriller!
The storytelling is top notch. Run is one of those books where I promised only to read one more page and 8 pages later… Even when I wasn't reading this book, I was thinking about reading this book.
The compelling characters, and numerous twists made this book unputdownable.
The nail biting intensity from this book was just amazing. It was exceptional and thought provoking and is definitely now my number one favorite book
A fun post-apocalyptic thriller.
Thank You NetGalley and Random House & Ballantine Books for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
4⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for a copy of Run.
Jack and his wife Dee and their two children Naomi and Cole have to pack up and leave everything they know when people start going on a rampage and killing. They have to run for their life. They do things they never thought they were capable of in the name of survival. The one thing that everyone is trying to figure out is why? What happened that made people all over start to kill?
This book was so good. It was fast paced and kept you on the edge of your seat. This is my second Blake Crouch book and I really enjoy his writing.
I felt like I was in a little bit of a slump and requested something fast paced and this was recommended. They nailed it! This is nonstop from the first sentence!! I couldn’t stop listening! There is no letting up in this story, the entire time you’re following alongside Jack as he and his family are on the run and seeking safety. Unsure who to trust, they must continue to move. My heart rate was up while reading this, especially as the family is climbing a mountain! It was crazy. I was rooting them on the entire time, hoping they could stay together and survive! I loved the way this family ended up coming together and finding peace in each other’s company and simple tasks! It was heartwarming, for like a second, then the craziness amped back up 😅 There is a lot of blood shed, some gruesome scenes, no mercy is given! Highly recommend for spooky season! The ending was so good! This one is an older Blake book and being rereleased next week! I have loved all of his books and am so happy they are releasing this one again and I got a chance to read it!
First thank you to random house and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Synopsis: suddenly a wave of violence is sweeping the continental lower 48 states. Jack and his family are listening to the emergency radio when he hears his name and knows someone is coming to get him and his family. They need to run or be killed.
What I liked: Blake crouch is an auto buy author for me and love his stories of something that could actually happened. I actually couldn’t go look at the northern lights outside while reading this just in case something happened. I saw them in may anyway.
Jack and his family are semi typical family forced to run and survive life in the post apocalypse. Blake does an amazing job of keeping your anxiety and heartbeat high throughout the book. This is a chase thriller and lives up to its name. They ran everywhere in the mountains and got very little rest. Every time they did something would happen that would disturb their peace and send them on the run again. I loved that. It was interesting how they survived and what happened to them on the road.
I do recommend this book especially for thriller fans. You will gobble this up in a sitting or two it is that good. Hopefully I will forget by the time the northern lights come around again
Upon reading the summary of the book, I had expectations that the book would start at Day 5 and work towards present day. If I hadn't read the summary I wouldn't have had any of that information. It was like starting the book in the middle of the book. I would have at least liked a prologue to lead up to why they were fleeing their town. That was the premise of the entire book. A family of four fleeing town, evading murderers, and scavenging for food and water. Then it all just ended abruptly and the survivors picked up with life as usual.
Thank you to NetGalley and . I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
”Maybe sometimes we just need to kill each other.”
Imagine The Purge with a sci-fi twist and you’ve got Run. It is action-packed, adrenaline-fueled, and filled with enough blood & guts to jump over the fence that separates a thriller from a horror story.
”Tell me how we’re going to survive this.”
If you’re expecting a deep-dive into science and technology and possibilities, which Blake Crouch is known for, this isn’t that. This is a gory, violent apocalyptic wasteland where the only concern is survival.
”It’s going to get very bad very fast.”
I’ll admit that there were a few plot points that weren’t fully explained, so I was a little lost in the details of the story. But Crouch definitely captured the tension and dread of the life-or-death situation, which kept me on the edge of my seat!

A huge thank you to Blake Crouch, Ballantine, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Run by Blake Crouch is a fast-paced, heart pounding, nightmare of a novel. We follow a family of four, parents Jack and Dee, their two children Naomi and Cole, in a time of total chaos and anarchy. At the outset of the book, we don’t know what’s happening just that there is violence and chaos happening across the contiguous United States. Groups of people are systematically hunting down and violently murdering others. Cell phone towers go down, there’s no tv, only a single radio station calling out names and addresses forcing the families, like Jack’s, to flee their home. They are horrified by what they find, death everywhere, cities and towns burned to the ground, constantly outrunning groups trying to find and kill them.
I didn’t realize till the author’s note at the end of the book that this was actually Blake Crouch’s first novel that he self-published. It’s being ‘officially published’ for the first time by Ballantine Books. I was hooked from the first moment I started reading this book. It kept me up half the night because I could not put it down. It gave me so much anxiety, yet I had to keep reading. It was a little like watching a train wreck in that as horrified as you were, you kept watching. There were moments of light and love throughout, which is what I love the most about Blake Crouch’s writing…even at the end of the world there are moments of humanity. I’m glad that his books after this are more balanced on the horror.
Thank you Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed Dark Matter and Recursion by Blake Crouch so I was excited to be chosen to receive an ARC of the rerelease of Run.
Unfortunately, I am deciding to DNF this book at 10% because the plot and POVs are quite jumbled and not pulling me in. I also feel this is much more jarring and violent than his other books I’ve read.
I will not be sharing this opinion so no link. I don’t want to deter other readers just because it was not for me!
This book was a really good, fast paced apocalyptic thriller. It was pretty non stop action and the characters were great. The writing was a tiny bit clunky for me but once you get into the rhythm of it it’s not too bad. Overall I really enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more of his books.
Thank you to NetGalley for this arc!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This version of the novel officially releases on 10/22/24!
This novel is the epitome of an edge of your seat plot. I was hooked from the first part and found myself trying to get back to reading it any chance I had. It’s my understanding that this is a re-release of this book so I’m not sure what, if anything, changed from previous editions. However, I found the premise of this novel to be intriguing and unique, and found myself rooting for all of the MCs throughout. Giving this one 4 stars because I do believe I would have liked a little more of a backstory as to why this happened since readers are plopped into this situation and although there is some discussion, to me it was still up for speculation. If you do decide to pick this one up, please check any relevant trigger warnings before doing so, as there are graphic depictions throughout.
This was just ok. The suspense was great but the formula was the same for the characters. Run, bad people, escape, and run again. This family simultaneously had the best and worst luck.
I didn't know until after reading that this book was the authors first. I have read a few of his other works and you can see how much he's grown as an author.
Overall this is definitely worth a read but if it is your first book from this author, I urge you to pick up more of his books.
Thank you to Netgalley, Blake Crouch, and Random House Publishing for the ebook. This isn’t my usual genre, but I genuinely loved it. If you enjoyed Bird Box, you won’t want to miss this one! I found myself on the edge of my seat, staying up late to turn the pages. It’s definitely a must-read!
4.5 stars rounded up to 5! What an exciting, heart pounding, thrilling ride! All of a sudden, a bunch of senseless shootings and killings have broken out across the US. What is happening and why have so many formerly good people turned into monsters? Jack, Dee and their two kids decide to hit the road to escape the craziness going on, but they soon discover that the world has become a terrible, threatening, unstable place. Run is full of suspense, action and emotions. You never know when the next scary thing is going to happen. Danger lurks around every corner. The tension had me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend this gripping read. Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the digital ARC.
Considering this was not my genre, it was good. I have read this author before but the book I read was different and much more of a science fiction-suspense thriller. This was post apocalyptic, not usually my thing. The general premise is that there is a phenomenon involving lights that made people who watched them kill others. This occurred in the United States and part of Mexico only, which confused me some. The country became "survivalist" as people tried to escape those driven to kill by the lights. We follow one family as they, at various points, get split up and find each other again. the plot was good, however, I would have liked to have seen more of a focus on relationships because some of the action became a bit repetitive and to me, it is the relationships during crises that are the most interesting.
Overall, I would give this 3.5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Run is Blake Crouch's first novel and it is being rereleased. It is insanely good and it's a debut! We follow four people, a family, as they run from the apocalyptic nightmare they are living. The world has turned upside down and there are bands of people murdering other people. Life, as we know it, has stopped. In this world, Jack and Dee along with their two kids, Naomi and Cole are just trying to survive. Whatever has happened has turned a percentage of the population into killers. How do you survive? How do you save your kids? Who can you trust? This was a compelling story that I read in one sitting. Wow. Thank you to Penguin Random House and Ballantine Books and Net Galley for my advance reader copy.
